  1. Saw them against Thomas Nelson in last year's opener and while they definitely passed the look test with good size and speed, you could tell they were very inexperienced. Their situation is unique in that they are building from nothing into both a school and team. I don't know what their ceiling is but I suspect they'll continue to improve in coming seasons.

No doubt it's a struggle.   They lost back to back games to Covington Latin, 11-1 and 24-6.   No one likes moral victories, but just finishing the season will be one for Newport.

Basketball program is excellent and football has had some good moments in recent years (and moving to Class 1A is probably even better for football). Of course baseball is a different animal but the roster appears to have quite a few kids and they've played a full schedule. Hopefully they'll continue to grow and improve.

I love the old school tiger on the side. Personally, I'm not a fan of any type of logo on the back of the helmet but if the kids and coaches like it, more power to them!

Do people think Mark Pope is going to win more than that?

To me, 75% is a reasonable expectation for Kentucky. That's 23 or 24 regular season wins. Rupp and Pitino were way above that, Calipari was just above, and Tubby was right on the number. Hall was actually under 75%. Will Pope hit that number? Who knows. If he doesn't, he'll likely meet a fate a similar to Sutton and Gillespie.

I'll still say its all about postseason success. Had Calipari went deeper in the SEC or NCAA tournaments over the last four years he'd still be in Lexington. He didn't, and now he's in Fayetteville. I have no idea if Pope will advance deeper, but if he has the same postseason results as Cal over the last four years, he'll probably be gone.

I don’t think DCA could make it work financially though. They don’t pay their faculty much and don’t offer insurance. It would be tough for a young man with a family.

This is why I think it has to either be someone young or someone retired from the education system. It would be really difficult for someone vested in the teacher retirement to go to DCA (or any private school).

Boyle County is everyone's Achilles heel so that is a given.

I don't know the answer here so this is for anyone, assuming Boyle, Corbin, and Tilghman all keep winning is there any chance that either Boyle or Corbin could play Tilghman before playing each other?

Maybe. Corbin and Boyle being in the east means they could play as early as the third round (like last year), while neither could play Tilghman until the semifinals because the Blue Tornado are in the west. It will come down to the RPI again and what type of seasons teams like Covington Catholic, Ashland, and/or Johnson Central have. It's just too early to tell.

Will this new stadium have a turf field or grass? Dyehouse's grass field is amazing in my opinion. Not too many good grass fields around anymore.

Turf. It will be shared with soccer and also has a track, something the school district has never had, despite fielding a team for decades.

  8. Below are a few pictures from the school's Facebook page posted today. Home side bleachers are expected to hold 2,500 people. I believe there are supposed to be visiting side bleachers that hold 500 between the two stone walls in the picture, but they haven't been installed at this time.

  9. Garrard County begins their third season under head coach Spencer Crutchfield. Golden Lions have several nice pieces returning, but like most everyone else, will also have to replace some graduating seniors. Construction on the new stadium at the high school is well underway and all home games should be played there this season, the first not at Dyehouse Stadium since 1964.

    No left players left over?

All Kentucky players last year have at least entered the portal. Not all have committed somewhere else so I guess theoretically they could return, but I wouldn't count on it. None of Cal's recruits have stayed with Kentucky, although Jayden Quaintance is said to still be considering choosing UK.

Which is unfortunate because Stockdale has built some positive momentum there not only with the football team but with school culture as well.

Big hire for them. Stockdale did good things, reviving a program that used to always been very good. The right hire can keep it going (and maybe more depending on the Thomas Nelson situation), but the wrong hire in a situation such as this could drop them back to where they started. Definitely a job to keep eyes on...

Thanks @gchs_uk9 and if you or anyone wants to use Calpreps to see how Boyle County would have performed against St. Edwards schedule last year I am all eyes. 👀

Calpreps says a 6-4 record for Boyle County against St. Edward's schedule last season. Again, this is all from the Calpreps predictor, not an actual prediction by me:

    • Center Grove (IN) 28, Boyle County 22
    • Our Lady of Good Counsel (MD) 27, Boyle County 14
    • Boyle County 38, Rock Creek Christian (MD) 10
    • Boyle County 35, Elder (OH) 17
    • Massillon (OH) 31, Boyle County 17
    • Boyle County 44, River Rouge (MI) 7
    • Boyle County 35, St. Ignatius (OH) 8
    • vs. Clarkson Football North (Ontario) - no rating on Calpreps; would predict a Boyle win considering St. Edward won convincingly
    • Boyle County 26, Archbishop Moeller (OH) 24
    • Archbishop Hoban (OH) 21, Boyle County 14

There are game recaps too in article form, for example:

AKRON, Ohio – St. Edward took its only lead of the game late in the fourth quarter on Friday night, but it was enough for a 14-7 win over Archbishop Hoban.

Sophomore running back Brandon White found a hole up the middle and scampered 12 yards for a touchdown with 3:39 left in the game to give the Eagles the 14-7 lead.

    AND

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Despite missing standout running back Jordan Marshall in the second half, the wind and rain began to blow in favor of Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller on Saturday at First Federal Lakewood Stadium.

St. Edward held on for a 28-21 win, but not until after its 21-point lead vanished on the chilly afternoon, which ended on a desperation pass to the end zone. Moeller receiver Preston Smith got his hands on the football, but St. Edward’s Xavier Styles and Bradley Eaton hit him hard enough to dislodge it before he could come down with the pass.

My apologies if someone already posted this, but St. Edward finished the year #2 in Ohio in Calpreps, #31 in the country overall. Calpreps had Boyle County #125 in the country, with a rating (55.1) that would have made the Rebels the fifth-ranked team in all of Ohio.

How to get on a recruits list:

    1a ... Size

    1b ... Speed

    4 ... High School stats

I've had this conversation with many people over the years. College coaches can miss on kids if they are the right size. You absolutely can't miss on someone who is too small. That's why the list looks like it does.

Do players still use smokeless tobacco? I assume some do, but figured that was a bygone practice given how in tune pro athletes are with their health today. But yeah, spitting just to spit has always been one of life's great mysteries.

I think smokeless tobacco is banned on the field in all levels of minor league baseball, but not MLB. Obviously those players might still do it away from the stadium.

I would think Russellville would mutually agree not to play that game IMO.

Russellville is typically solid but after their run to the finals they graduated a ton. They might want to cancel, but they might also want to challenge themselves against a top-tier program like Tilghman in an effort to help prepare themselves for the better teams in Class 1A.

They better keep adding more. Corbin tried the same and it didn’t work for them either. PT got put out by a team BC beat 41-0 so they will need a whole Cold War worth of stock pile!

While your point is valid, I think many people thought last year's Tilghman team was a better matchup for Boyle than CovCath. Football is all about matchups and sometimes A is better than B, B better than C, but C better than A. I don't know if Paducah Tilghman will be good enough to beat Boyle County, but I do hope we get a chance to see those two teams play.
