I hope Coach Woods lands at another 12 region school, builds a powerhouse program, and serves that Super of Wayne County an entire humble pie!

When you lose someone of that stature from your school, let alone an athletic program, it has DEEP repercussions that some shallow thinkers don’t take into consideration.

Certainly sounded from Larry Vaught's article that Woods was pretty content to be retired, stay in Wayne County, and go watch Tennessee basketball. I can't see him going to another school, but if I had an opening I would most definitely call him.

Steve Wright trying to coach as many teams in the state as possible before he hangs it up? lol.  Steve has a proven track record as a winning coach, but his stay is short to say the least.

Which is funny after he spent two decades at South Laurel and a little time at Southwestern he's become something of a mercenary ever since.

Yes. Don't schedule and agree to contracts that you don't plan on fulfilling.

Was there wiggle room on the contract? I think Lincoln was originally scheduled to play Lafayette last season but something came up and they added Scott County pretty last-minute. I'll assume it was a 2-year deal but someone more in the know can maybe confirm.

Powell County is the 3rd largest high school enrollment in the 14th region, about 650 students. That’s a nice number from which to develop a good program for an energetic coach.

Add in a very winnable district (two of the other three schools are very small), a proximity to central Kentucky that might promote growth (something no other region school except Estill County can claim), and a solid basketball history (28 district titles and 2 state tournament appearances) and this is definitely a good job in the 14th Region.

The entire story is in Larry Vaughts column this morning. It does not mention the non-tenured teachers who he was at odds with who he fired though. An exerpt from the column:

So why was Woods not surprised he was fired? Simple. It seems Woods’ wife was on a superintendent search screening committee 10 years ago that did not recommend Neal, a principal in the Wayne system at the time, to be superintendent.

“He said then he would get me and he was hired as superintendent in August,” Woods said Wednesday. “He sent one of his assistants to my house today to tell me that my coaching duties had been terminated. Nobody is going to be able to talk to him or call him.”

    The article:

I’m reminded of both the title and the final line of a classic song by The Who.  Some of you will know before I finish typing this post.

    (We) Won’t Get Fooled Again

”Meet the new boss.  Same as the old boss.”

Honestly, every lyric from that song works on this situation!

The Woods rumor has been rumored all season in Wayne County circles. It's not voluntary. Wayne recently hired a new superintendent after the other one was forced out.  He was not on the list given by the superintendent screening committee and it was all suspicious in how it went down.  If true, it was a superintendent decision and not a principal or AD decision.

From last summer, the last paragraph in the article linked below. Clearly some bad blood between multiple parties in Monticello...

The meeting was quickly adjourned with security officers clearing the board room during some heated verbal exchanges at the conclusion. Neal’s contract begins on August 1, 2023. Neal served the district for many years including as teacher, principal, and director of transportation.

I am curious how they were able to stop traffic so quickly. The ship mayday call was just a couple minutes before it hit the bridge yet they were able to stop traffic going onto the bridge. How did they do that? Toll gates?

I believe the distress signal went out to emergency responders and they halted traffic.

Wasn't it middle of the night which would have limited the amount of traffic, too.

They also said, and it was Drew Franklin specifically who said, that two assistants on Cal's staff are "stealing money."  They didn't specify the assistants.

I assume one is Bruiser Flint, who seems to sit sideways on the bench and never say a word. I wonder who the other is? Maybe Chuck Martin, who came from Oregon?

I should also say this and it's just my opinion from observations and conversations.  There have been times over the years that I think the County has been anywhere from lukewarm to very interested.  But I'm not sure there has ever been a time that the City has been very interested at all.  A couple of time the DISD has gotten in to pretty bad shape financially and some preliminary discussions took place I believe.  But that hasn't been the case in a long time and right now I don't believe either side has any interest in a merger whatsoever!  So we will probably just keep hearing rumors about it happening for the next 30-40 years.

I'm over 40 years old and every conversation I've ever had with anyone about this has always said "it will happen in 7-10 years." It still hasn't happened, but a lot of 7-10 year ranges have come and gone! 😂

What are the chances that Boyle and Danville consolidate in the future? A lot of city schools around the state have done that over the decades such as Harrodsburg, Maysville, Salyersville,  Monticello, etc.

Someone smarter about this than me can probably answer it better but Danville is larger than those schools listed. They still have right at 500 kids in the high school. Their tax base is still solid, although all the suburban land has been gobbled up by the Boyle County district over the last two decades. I think consolidation could happen but I'm not sure how imminent.

There was a time when "Transy Camp" was the only major, recognized team and individual camp in Kentucky.  Any player worth his salt attended "Transy Camp."

I suspect that Coach Lane made more money by running that camp for all of those years than he ever did coaching at Transy.

I went to a Transy game this season and during a media timeout the PA man announced the camp for this summer. He then said it had been around for however-many years and asked anyone in the audience who had ever attended the camp to stand up. I'd say over half the gym stood up!

Per Goodman, Louisville is down to 3 Candidates. Seton Halls coach, Charlestons coach and potentially South Florida’s coach.

That doesn't feel like a murderers row of replacement candidates.  I would definitely prefer Holloway of the 3 though.

What I like about Shaheen Holloway is how tough his teams are. They were a bubble team this year and didn't make it. He made a couple comments after the selection show about Seton Hall not getting picked, but then they've rolled through two rounds of the NIT (when teams who feel they were shafted often just pack it in). That tells me he has control and respect with the players.

He is a Seton Hall alum and a New Jersey guy, but certainly Louisville could offer him money that Seton Hall likely couldn't match. He wouldn't be a bad option.

  14. This shows the size and power of these container ships. The bridge folded like an erector set. Terribly sad situation. @Jumper_Dad mentioned the time of day; I think I saw something this morning that the rescue squad thought it was somewhere between 7-20 cars on the bridge when it collapsed.

If Lyon County wins, they would be the first non-football playing school to win the title since University Heights in 1992. They would be the first public non-football school since Earlington in 1967. I don’t think Earlington had football but I may be wrong.

Earlington had football prior to World War II but by the time they won the basketball title in 1967 the pigskins were long gone.

  16. Of the 15 schools that over time have combined and consolidated to get to Harlan County High School, only three teams ever played in the state tournament: Benham, first round losers in 1931 and 1935, and Cumberland, first round victims in 2003.

I suspect there will be a good deal of cheering tonight from some old Evarts Bulldogs and Highsplint Ramblers; probably a lot of rooting from former Cumberland Redskins, Benham Tigers, East Benham Rams, Lynch Bulldogs, and Lynch West Main Pirates; some hooting and hollering from some past Cawood Trojans, Loyall Indians, Black Star Eagles, Hall Gamecocks, Cawood City Wildcats, Grays Knob Yellow Jackets, and Yancey Bulldogs; and a little familial excitement from myself, whose family left Wallins (home of the Purple Devils), almost a century ago exactly.

Good luck to the Black Bears!

  17. Both schools playing for their first state championship. Lyon County had not advanced past the second round before this season while Harlan County had only played one state tournament game in history, a first round loss in 2017. For the Lyons, they'll try to be the first Region 2 team to win it all since Christian County in 2011; Harlan County is looking to be the first Region 13 team to cut the nets since Clay County in 1987 (current 13th Region member South Laurel was still in the Region 12 when they won it in 2005).

Since Scott D. passed on the Ville, how about his baby brother Bryce?  Dude has had a good run at Grand Canyon and is a darling of the tournament!

His lack of success at Vanderbilt was odd, considering he's won big everywhere else. Seeing Jerry Stackhouse, who was also highly regarded, completely flame out at Vandy makes me think it is a Vanderbilt problem more than a coaching problem. I doubt Bryce Drew ends up at Louisville but I wouldn't be surprised if his name pops up at another bigger job real soon.
