  1. I will be interested to see how SW does against LC tonight. SW seems to play much better ball of late. They played McCreary tight.

From what I have seen the 46th is the weakest district, but maybe the most competitive.

The champ is coming out of the 45th or 48th.

Good points...with the exception of Southwestern/Lincoln. I think the Patriots will handle the Warriors with ease. While Southwestern is playing better, they still have only won one game since the calendar flipped to 2008.

I think you're right about the 46th District being the weakest. It might be the most competitive, but I don't think anyone expects Burgin to advance. In my mind, the 47th (Somerset, Casey, Pulaski, Rockcastle) might be the most competitive because I think any of the four teams could legitimately win that district.

  2. How is the Region bracket configured? Is it already laid out 46th champ vs ? runnerup and so on. Or does a District champ draw a random District runner up?

It's a draw. District champions draw first and get placed in the 1,3,5,7 spots of the brackets. District runners-up draw second and can only draw into the opposite bracket. For example, if McCreary Central wins their district and draws into spot 1, Wayne County as runner-up could only go into the 6 or 8 spot. A mock bracket setup is below. Bottom line, district rivals can't meet until the regional championship game.

  3. Hoping he will call Bell. The week of Cumberland on the schedule Bell playes Leslie. Just hoping that all three could work something out.:thumb:

Larkey had a long playing history with Bell. It would be nice to see the coaching rivalry revived with Bell County playing Harlan County.

  4. Rumor is that 3 of the applicants at Madison Southern have already contacted Garrard about their position. That could mean they are out already. Don't know which three, but at least three.

I would imagine Lincoln, Garrard and Madison Southern are all getting similar applications. The slowness of Lincoln and Southern to make their hires might be a blessing for Garrard County.

As for Southern, I would like to see them make a good choice for once. It seems like they hire the same guy every couple of years, only with a different name. I've always thought Southern was a place that a coach could be successful at. Hopefully the new hire (whoever and whenever to be determined!) will help that program make strides.

  5. Why did Jaggers go to Mercer? He knew that the merger was getting ready to happen with Harrodsburg and Mercer .

How many off the field issues did Boyle County have in their state runs???

You talk about solid program that has went downhill since the Stonebraker era, what was Hester's record at Garrard before Stonebraker? 2-8????

Jaggers definitely went to Mercer County because of the impending consolidation. But I don't think anyone knew it was coming as quick as it did. Heck, I'd been hearing about a Mercer/Harrodsburg merger for 10-15 years.

As for the number of off the field issues at Boyle County, I can't be sure. I know there were a few, but several times issues happened after players had graduated from Boyle. What I do know is that with those issues at Boyle, they were still able to maintain success on the field. Issues at Garrard always seemed to result in split teams, suspensions and losses.

As for Hester, I'll be the first to admit he didn't do as good of job as many expected. Part was he inherited a much tougher district that Jerry Perry had. Second, he moved up from Class A to AA. Third, he didn't have as much talent as Perry. But hiring Jeff Hester was a stop-gap measure by Garrard to try and keep the same people in place that had been there during the excellent run by Coach Perry.

If hiring a former assistant to replace the winningest coach in school history didn't work, why should we expect hiring an assistant from a mediocre-at-best coach would turn out any better?

  6. GCHS_UK you talk about the Garrard job being attractive for coaches, can you tell me how many regional championships Garrard has won in the schools history?

While I certainly sense a touch of sarcasm in your question, I can say that Garrard County hasn't won a regional championship in their history. They were runners-up in 1967 (10-1), 1993 (12-1) and 1995 (10-3).

Take that with a grain of salt, however, because I'm sure you know the playoffs were a little harder to reach prior to 1991. Since the expansion of the postseason Garrard County has been to the playoffs 13 times (out of 18 possible chances) and won 11 games in their 13 appearances. Unfortunately over the last few seasons the playoff losses have not been close, with average losses by 38.5 points.

I'm not sure that past regional championships are a good measuring stick. How many had Boyle County won prior to Chuck Smith's arrival? What made Mercer County look so appealing to Marty Jaggers? Where was Rockcastle County on the map when Tom Larkey showed up?

What is apparent is that the previous staff wasn't getting the job done and hiring a head coach from that staff would be ridiculous, although your previous posts suggest otherwise. You mentioned earlier that Garrard County was a small school - 750-ish students is small? What the program needs more than anything is someone with some discipline to come in a run the show. Too many off- and on-field distractions over the last few years have rubbed the shine off of what used to be a solid program. Garrard County can still be a solid program with the right hire. So while some folks want to badmouth Garrard because their boy isn't getting hired. That's provides no credibility to your argument and does nothing to promote the program.

  7. Successful head coaching experience would be even better. Successful assistant coaching experience might not be bad. Despite what gnat is saying, it is hard to imagine Garrard as an attractive position.

How so? It isn't Boyle County or Lincoln County, but why wouldn't it be considered "attractive?" They have a terrific field, nice weight-room, new school being built with all new facilities to come, growing community, and relatively easy to compete in district and class.

I realize winning state championships might be difficult at Garrard, but winning 7+ games and making somewhat deep plunges into the playoffs isn't out of the question.

  8. Is the question how they looked in their championship game or how they played all season? If just who was most impressive in Louisville, I'll go like this:

    1. Trinity (6A)

    2. Highlands (5A)

    3. Lexington Catholic (4A)

    4. Central (3A)

    5. Fort Campbell (2A)

    6. Beechwood (1A)

As you can tell, it breaks down perfectly by class!

  9. They are a solid team. JBS was 16-3 a couple weeks ago but lost three straight to Hazard, Perry County Central and Cordia. They got back in the win column Saturday night against Johnson Central.

JBS has a team capable of winning the 14th Region and making a return trip to Rupp Arena, but right now they are behind Hazard.

  10. I'll try to answer the original question, "Where did the new coach come from?"

BALLARD - Mike Jackson (from Pikeville)

HARLAN COUNTY - Tom Larkey (from Rockcastle County)

    MURRAY - Steve Duncan (?)

NORTH HARDIN - Crad Jaggers (assistant at Central Hardin last year)

ROCKCASTLE COUNTY - Scott Parkey (promoted assistant)

TATES CREEK - Mike Harmon (from Lafayette)

WEST JESSAMINE - Randy Wood (from Morgan County; wasn't a head coach last year I believe)

  11. By the way, the district schedule is as follows:

    45th District @ Lincoln County

    (1) Lincoln County vs. (4) Danville/(5) KSD winner

    -Game 1: Lincoln County 76, Danville 55

    -Game 2: Lincoln County 87, Danville 48

    (2) Boyle County vs. (3) Garrard County

-Game 1: Boyle County 60, Garrard County 53

-Game 2: Garrard County 59, Boyle County 55 (OT)

    46th District @ West Jessamine

    (1) West Jessamine vs. (4) Burgin

    -West Jessamine 68, Burgin 36

    (2) Mercer County vs. (3) East Jessamine

-Game 1: Mercer County 76, East Jessamine 72

-Game 2: Mercer County 56, East Jessamine 55

    47th District @ Rockcastle County

    (1) Somerset vs. (4) Rockcastle County

    -Game 1: Somerset 77, Rockcastle County 70

    -Game 2: Somerset 78, Rockcastle County 66

    (2) Casey County vs. (3) Pulaski County

-Game 1: Casey County 67, Pulaski County 54

-Game 2: Casey County 73, Pulaski County 57

    48th District @ McCreary Central

    (1) McCreary Central vs. (4) Southwestern

    -Game 1: McCreary Central 77, Southwestern 51

    -Game 2: McCreary Central 71, Southwestern 66

    (2) Wayne County vs. (3) Monticello

    -Game 1: Wayne County 73, Monticello 47

    -Game 2: Wayne County 80, Monticello 31

  12. Christopher Columbus coming to America....simply to see what everything would be like right now if he hadn't come here.

As Nelson Muntz said on the Simpsons, "If you hadn't done it, some other loser would have!"

While Columbus did came to "America," there were European explorations of North America in the years before and after. Most likely another European would have eradicated the natives and set up colonies if Columbus hadn't.

  13. So.. is it eveyone's thinking that only a coach with head coaching experience will only be looked at?

I have seen some talent come out of Garrad County and have always thought that it could be a good opportunity for the right coach to fit in.

Who ever gets it, will have a good pool to draw from.

In my opinion, saying "head coach experience" was basically meant to dissuade current assistants from applying for the job. They might look at assistants without experience, but not anyone current on staff at Garrard.
