  1. Actually, it would have been Jackson/North

    Then I stand corrected!:D

I still think this district should play out with the two best teams going to the region. It would have been much worse if OBI and Red Bird were playing for a berth.

I do clearly understand the argument for seeding. I would like to see a blanket rule for districts, either one way or the other.

  2. How does the tiebreaker work? Casey County and Somerset both finished 4-2. Pulaski County is third at 3-3 and Rockcastle County is fourth at 1-5.

By the way, finishing first or second (Casey/Somerset) might not be the best thing in this district. The first place team gets an improved Rockcastle County team in Mount Vernon. The second place team gets a Pulaski County team that is usually tough in the postseason and split the season series with Somerset.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the 3rd and 4th place teams in this district make the regional tournament.

  3. I'm not sure it's that bad for the 49th THIS SEASON. Jackson County has been ranked as the top team all season and they need to beat Red Bird to get to the region. Clay and North have been 2/3 all season and they have to beat each other. It seems like Clay/North would have to beat each other in a seeded tournament as well.

  4. In the 45th District it seems like the only time you see three referees is during district games (regular season and postseason). That's the same for both girls and boys games to my knowledge.

I'm not usually a fan of three-man crews, either for girls or boys. It seems like there are too many whistles and each ref wants to get his calls in.

  5. Coop will do a great job and desreves the shot if he wants it.

Explain how. In seven years as defensive coordinator, what has he done to prove himself a worthy candidate for the head coaching position? Let's take a took at numbers. I know points per game aren't the only thing on defense, but when your defense can't stop people, that makes it tough on the offense.

    2001: 256 points allowed (23.3 per game)

    2002: 202 (20.2)

    2003: 226 (18.8)

2004: 259 (23.5) forfeit with Danville not included

    2005: 319 (29.0)

    2006: 420 (38.2)

    2007: 338 (28.2)

As you can tell, the defense has gotten steadily worse. It's probably no surprise that the wins have dried up from the earlier years as well. But in seven years Garrard is only under 20 per game once...and that's not exactly against a torrid schedule.

For what it's worth, in Garrard County High School history, 1964-2007, four of the worst ten defensive seasons have occured on the Stonebraker/Cooper watch: 2006 (worst), 2007 (second worst), 2005 (4th) and 2004 (10th).

I don't think that looks like someone who has earned a shot. Garrard County could do so much better.

  6. Cant see Perry taking the Garrad job. He has had other opportunties to take the job and hasnt. I think he will take over for Harp when he retires in a few years.

What other opportunities? Perry left in 1996 and Jeff Hester was hired. After Hester resigned in 2000, Stonebraker was hired. By my count that says the Garrard County job has only been open once since he left.

I think it's probably an assumed fact that Perry wants the Danville job after Harp leaves. I think Marty Jaggers might have wanted the same when he left Lincoln. But Danville won't forget them if they wait out Harp in another location.

  7. Sorry for the lateness of the post. I spoke with an assistant coach yesterday that told me Coach Stonebraker was resigning. I also spoke with someone from the paper who confirmed it. Apparently Stonebraker has some good options as an offensive coordinator. Best of luck to him.

As for who the next head coach will be, I'd definitely say it's up in the air. I've heard that Garrard County isn't planning on posting the position until after spring practice. The hope would be that the school district would be proactive in their search for a coach, but nothing in their history says that they will.

The job is pretty appealing. Garrard is one of the faster-growing counties in the state, which is bringing quite a few kids into the building. They play in a fairly weak 3A district which should mean competitiveness on a yearly basis. And apparently the pay is okay...not "Boyle/Morriss" level, but okay!

I would expect to hear some names tossed about over the next month. Jerry Perry, who went 65-18 during a seven year run at Garrard in the '90s, will most certainly be mentioned. I wouldn't be surprised if he returned. Mike Settles, currently coaching at Bullitt East and being mentioned for Lincoln, might also be a possibility. He was a finalist when Stonebraker was hired. Certainly some assistant coaches will want to take their shot at a job.

As for current assistants, I can't see Cooper getting the job. I would imagine the district will want to step outside of the current coaching tree because the two top branches seemed to have little control over the last couple years. I don't think any other assistants would want the head coach position, although they likely would remain on staff.

All in all, it should be an interesting couple of months. Hopefully it will result in a wise choice by the folks at Garrard County.

  8. Agreed. No one is calling Garrard County a regional contender and rightfully so. It was good to see them compete with Anderson County, who likely is the 8th region favorite as of right now.

I will say this: Garrard County played pretty well. I'm not sure if the score would have been the same if this game was in Lawrenceburg. Anderson County is very long and they have several kids that can score. It would be a big challenge (not impossible, just tough) for Lincoln, McCreary, et al. to beat them in the state tournament.

  9. I disagree, I would say this is exhibit A of why it SHOULD be seeded. I don't even know who all is in the district, but the team that finishes 2nd in the district would have EARNED the right NOT to play Mason Co. in the first round of the district tournament. Those kids are the ones that are hurt by not seeding if they draw Mason and don't get the chance to play in the regional by luck of the draw, rather than by their performance.

Would they rather play Mason County twice during the season and guarantee two beat-downs, or would they rather take a chance on the draw?

Regular season, with seeding: 0% chance of winning

No seeding: 67% chance of avoiding Mason County and giving self decent shot at regional berth

  10. I can imagine that it's fairly rare, but we know it wouldn't be fair for anyone involved to play a regular season game.

This district would be exhibit A for the KHSAA not to force seeding. Most years Mason County would destroy their district rivals in regular season play, which means the Royals varsity players would get no time and the opponents wouldn't really gain much from the experience.
