Yes, I guess Hilltopper can now support the baseballers. I guess we made a liar out of you. We covered the 12-15 points that you said we'd get beat by. Sorry! Hope you didn't bet against the Breds tonight. Basketball is officially over, but I'm telling you that H.C. Basketball is about to turn the corner. Depending on who we have coming back next year, we could put the most athletic team on the court in years. Plus, a lot of teams in the region lose several seniors. Mason will be Mason, but everyone else loses several players. I can't wait till next year!!!!

Hats off to Scott. They hit their free throws down the stretch when it counted. First half foul trouble hurt the Breds. Three starters missed almost all of the second quarter with two fouls. The last two or three minutes of the first half were the difference in the game. With less than a minute to play in the first half, Scott led 24-21. By the time the half ended, Scott was up 32-21. Nice rally by the Breds in the second half...with 30 seconds to play, the Breds were down by 4 and had a chance to come up with a loose ball. A couple of questionable calls hurt as HC couldn't seem to get a marginal call from the referees. Intentional foul on HC was really shaky IMO. Certainly it was a hard foul, but the player wasn't wrapped up and wasn't taken to the floor. #14 for HC did what coaches always teach...if your gonna foul, don't let them make the bucket too. He raked his arm pretty good, but shouldn't have been intentional. Later, a HC player was called for a double dribble by a ref that couldn't possibly see that the ball had been batted loose by a Scott defender, allowing him to restart his dribble. Why have three officials if the only official who CAN"T see the play clearly, is the one who makes the call. Referee's DID NOT cost HC the game, but had those calls gone the other way, it COULD HAVE influenced the game a little. Regardless, Congrats to Scott. They will have a difficult task taking on GRC (don't get defensive you Augusta fans...just trying to be realistic). I don't think Scott has the horses to handle the Cards.

apparently about the only thing that can disrupt the Royals will be some kind of internal bickering over individual awards...keep it coming!!! That's about the only way the rest of the region may have a chance. How many of you are in the Setty Camp? How about the Middleton Camp? Darius Miller? I can't believe Tyreese isn't mentioned as an all-region performer, if I was him, I would really be mad.

It will be interesting to see how the 10th Region Tournament for the girls shakes out. Draw will be held today (Sat., March 3) at Montgomery County High School. It appears the strongest teams in the region all made it through district play with the exception of a quality Paris squad that, unfortunately, plays in the strongest district (40th) in the region. These are the participants: District winners: Brossart (37), Harrison (38), Mason (39), Montgomery (40) District runners-up : Scott (37), Nicholas (38), St. Pat (39), GRC (40) It appears that Montgomery and Mason are the class of the field among the winners and that GRC is the toughest first-round match-up for Brossart, Harrison or Mason. Certainly, all three of those teams want to avoid pulling GRC's pill. Tournament will begin on Monday at Montgomery County with two first-round games. Two more first-round games on Tuesday. Semi-finals on Friday, with the title game on Saturday night. Just for fun, Here's the way I see the draw coming out: Harrison vs. St. Pat and Brossart vs. GRC on Monday Montgomery vs. Scott and Mason vs. Nicholas on Tuesday Harrison vs. GRC and Montgomery vs. Mason in semis on Friday Harrison vs. Montgomery in championship game on Sat. with the Lady Indians prevailing, 63-50. Hopefully a nice crowd will attend, as the admin. at Montgomery hosts their first regional in brand spanking new facility. It'll be worth it to pay $5 just to see the place!!

Common Opponents: Nicholas Co ---HC won both, 84-57, 71-40; Deming played them 4 times, winning 3 (75-50, 78-60, 60-49) and losing 1 (73-72). Montgomery Co. --- Nicholas lost 72-40; Harrison won 41-40 Bracken Co. --- Deming played 3 times, going 2-1 (won 60-56, 58-56 and lost 67-56; Harrison won 65-55 Grant Co. --- Deming lost 71-57; Harrison won 77-54 Augusta --- Deming went 0-2, losing 69-51 and 64-61; Harrison won 76-65 Paris --- Deming lost 70-66; Harrison won 63-50. Certainly, you can throw out the records when the post-season begins, but it is fairly clear that HC has played the much tougher schedule and has fared far better against common opponents. HC didn't win many against those tough out of region opponents, but playing that kind of competition will surely prepare them for post-season play much better than playing a weaker schedule. There shouldn't be any pressure on either team, as both will move on to Maysville next week. I would be surprised if Deming beats Harrison Co. Harrison Co. might beat themselves by playing poorly, but I believe the regular season schedule will pay off and the Breds will win, 64-49. Deming has some good quality players...it would help them immensely if they beefed up their schedule just a bit. Sprinkle in a Clark Co. or a Cov. Scott, or a Brossart...not enough to kill Deming's confidence, but enough to give them a taste of playing traditionally good "bigger" schools. Maybe I am totally off base here. I can remember Mason Co. in the 1980s had an undefeated regular season, and never played outside the 10th Region...maybe one or two games. They won the 10th Region that year, as well, I think.

Harrison 6th grade lost to Pendleton Co. in last tourney at Harrison Co. Pendleton Co. has a good team coming, but I don't know if they have much before or after the 6th grade bunch??

bang up defensive effort by Weston Jenkins, Josh Curtis, and Simon Clouse on Belcher. Belcher scored 17, but had to earn every one of them. Nice production from the HC bench...Franklin, Custard, Puckett, Clouse. All contributed to the win. Now it's time to come back to earth and get ready for Deming/Nicholas

Harrison County beat Campbell County on Thursday night @ GRC in the 10th Region Freshman Tournament title game, 58-47....something like that. Harrison County finishes the year 17-4....two losses to Mason Co., one to Lexington Catholic in OT, and one to Bracken Co. in the regular season. (I think this is correct, if not, please advise) Nice job by the Colts!!!

I guess Harrison Co. won the last 22 minutes of the 32 minute game by a 29-25 margin, huh? Just kidding, don't freak out you Loyal Royal supporters.

I think the "All A Tourney" was set-up for the smaller schools to have their time in the spotlight! This is not a KHSAA sponsored event, but it should be. Then they could force all districts across the state to seed.

Harrison Co. has probably overachieved this year, considering the difficult schedule they have played along with the fact that two or three players that should have played and been big contributors, aren't even on the team this year. A couple of strong classes (9th and 10th graders) could mean HC may rejoin the regional elite in a year or two. The team seems to be improving as the season wears on and could be a tough out come post-season time. The big kid for Paris is a horse inside...could play for about any team in the region. Put him on Scott's team, or any other team that has strong perimeter play and they become automatic contenders.

Harrison County is a typical rural school that has its talent run in cycles. 60s and 70s were strong, 80s was not strong at all, 90s was excellent and the 2000s have been "competitive", but not upper echelon. I don't know that anything is "wrong", just don't have the marquee players that we have had in the past. One thing Harrison County does that some other rural schools do not do, is undertake a strong schedule, regardless of what they might have talent-wise. A similar school to Harrison County in the 10th Region is Montgomery Co. Bart Rison is a well-respected coach, and rightfully so. He routinely has 20+ win seasons, and probably will have again this year, but the schedule the Indians play is not in the same class with Harrison Co. What would MC's record be, if they played the same schedule as HC? Not picking on MC at all, just using them as a comparison. Pendleton Co. is another example of a rural school whose talent pool runs in cycles. They were exceptionally strong two or three straight years and could, and did, compete on a state-wide level. That pool has dried up somewhat and they will be pretty ordinary for a while now.

Topper and Thorobred have to be former members of the "baseball mafia" at H.C.

I don't guess playing at 4:00 in afternoon and playing during the UK game has anything to do with it.
