  1. It's typically British. They wanted integration when their economy was in the tank, now that they're doing ok, they feel other countries are dragging them down. Giving away some sovereignty was part of the deal. The states here in the US gave away the sovereignty they had under the articles of Confederation to create the government we've known ever since. There are benefits and drawbacks. Over half of Britain's exports go to other EU countries. About half the things it imports come from other EU countries. And the immigration goes both ways. There are huge enclaves made entirely of Brits living along the Mediterranean in Spain. That's just one example. Time will tell if they did damage or saved themselves.
  2. Nigel Farage is as giddy as a schoolboy and already walking back the Leave Campaign's promise to use the EU contribution money to fully fund the National Health Service.
  3. Cameron rolled the dice one too many times. Finally came up snake eyes. The smart money is still on buying up pounds sterling today as they'll come out up in the long run, but these next few weeks will be telling as to how this exit will go for them.
  4. Rule 50 of the EU Charter is what I believe Cameron will now invoke. It has a two-year period for exit negotiations and I can't imagine anyone in Brussels wanting to make those talks very pleasant for the Brits. EU was never contemplated with exits in mind. Just read that the terms of Rule 50 that put together the framework for how a country leaves didn't even exist before 2009.
  5. Pound already fallen 11 percent against the dollar. Lowest since 1985.
  6. EU will trudge on. Need serious help and one of the big voices for reform no longer at the table. Short term: pound will fall, markets will have a rough Friday. Long term: Scotland has another departure referendum, David Cameron goes down in history as the PM that broke up the UK. Beyond that it's hard to see. This was driven by immigration and I guess that will slow but we'll have to see what the long term economic consequences really are.
  7. Sinn Fein says they'll propose a referendum on Irish reunification if the Brexit happens. Most folks in Ireland don't even want to think about that stuff these days but that's Sinn Fein for you.
  8. Wow. I'm completely stunned.
  9. Meh. Liverpool went for Remain... As I expect all the major cities to. And Scotland also going pretty heavily for Remain. If Brexit wins, there will be another vote in Scotland to break up the UK, I think.
  10. Remain now ahead. The cities are still out. As Bluegrasscard said, London is the hope for Remain, pulling an upset in the midlands are the hope of Leave.
  11. Because anyone who follows the sport knows that sensitive referee was out of his blasted mind. Whatever.
  12. First Volume of Callow's massive three part bio of Orson Welles.
  13. Have a copy of that sitting on the shelf right now. Later this summer. Looking forward to it.
  14. I hope that the sense of revenge runs through this team as their performance in that opening Group stage game was less than stellar.
  15. Polls this morning indicated the vote to remain in Europe was ahead by about 10 points. I think Brexit would be a tremendous mistake and I hope those polls hold true.
  16. It's the independent nature of lower league soccer that helps. Cincinnati and Louisville are their own entities with no ties to upper level teams. Our players are our own and can't simply be called up. Gives the city a sense of ownership in the club that it's impossible to have with minor league baseball or hockey.
  17. Combination of both natural and artificial. Most of the field is the grass from the baseball field but they stitch in an artificial surface over the infield dirt and retractable pitcher's mound. We affectionately refer to those areas as our Turf Monster. It has claimed the footing of many a visiting player attempting to take a quick turn.
  18. Uhhh... what? Wow. That came from nowhere.
  19. The Irish Messi strikes again!! What a cross by Wes Hoolahan to set up Robbie Brady for the game winner in the 85th minute. Ireland through to the last 16. They'll play France.
  20. Iceland! Unreal. Through to the last 16 after a win against Austria. Arnor Traustason with the winner in the 94th minute. Sends a much-hyped Austria team home in last place in Group F.
  21. No. 1 vs. No. 3 on Saturday. Come on down, Cincinnati.
  22. Another week in the books and here are the ppg standings. I think everyone is between 12 and 15 games played now. We're starting to get some separation between the top three and the rest of the Eastern Conference... 1) Louisville City FC 2.27 2) New York Red Bulls II 2.15 3) FC Cincinnati 2.08 4) Charleston Battery FC 1.71 5) Charlotte Independence 1.62 6) Rochester Rhinos 1.50 7) Richmond Kickers 1.36 8) Wilmington Hammerheads FC 1.31 (edge out Bethlehem Steel FC for last playoff spot on goal differential if season ended today). If things ended today, that would be a matchup between FCC and the reigning champions in the first round. I think Rochester will eventually finish one or two spots up... but that's still intriguing. We're nearly halfway through the season. Lots of good games left to play.
  23. Yarbrough or something like that? Yeah. And Zach Steffen was a fantastic keeper during the last U-20 World Cup. Got his hand on the game winning penalty but couldn't quite stop it in that quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Serbia.
  24. And his step too. The guy is 37. There's no way he can react like he could even a couple years ago.
  25. Klinsmann went with -- and expected too much from -- "his guys" that have played for him for years. I think you nailed the exact source of my disappointment with last night. In the 1994 World Cup we played eventual champions Brazil to a 1-0 game in the Round of 16 and it was level until the 72nd minute. In the 2002 Cup a much superior German side needed a handball on the goal line to hang on to a 1-0 win over the USA in the quarterfinals. There are things you can do to keep yourself in a game against a vastly superior side and give yourself a chance right up to the death. Klinsmann did none of those things yesterday and instead hung his team out to dry with tired dependence on players that had no business going toe-to-toe with that Argentina team.
