Hancock County takes the drive west to War Memorial to play the Mayfield Cardinals in a second round playoff game. The Hornets dominated the Caldwell Co Tigers last week to earn the right to play the Cardinals. Mayfield had the first round off as their first round opponent, Fort Knox, decided to forfeit rather than make the trip. The win over the Tigers puts Hancock Co at 8-3 for the year, beating them 41-0. The Hornets trend toward running the ball more than putting it in the air, and did that well enough to establish a running clock in the third quarter. Can they have similar success against the Cardinals? It is unlikely, but stranger things have happened. The Cardinals saw the return of Josiah England last week against Central playing in limited action. But even without Josiah, Mayfield can hurt you on the ground. But the Hornets can’t load the box either as the Cardinal receiving corps have proven themselves to be dangerous. Grey Robbins has been a very efficient and mostly accurate passer the entire season. He finally did throw has first interception of the year last week against Central. So who is up to the challenge? Who moves on to the third round? Tell us what you think.

Bardstown had better be prepared for Marshall and Cherry who are hard to bring to the ground. Against us last week, they consistently got yards when it looked like they had been stopped. Also, do not go to sleep on Baker’s arm. I was impressed with his accuracy when he chose to put it in the air.

For the first time in 3 years Mayfield has a full schedule, and this week will welcome the Louisville Central Yellowjackets to War Memorial. Central is a 3A power that has not had their usual success this year as they come in with a 4-5 record ranked #20 in the latest 3A RPI rankings. In the second week of the season, Central lost to Belfry 28-0. In that game they had 56 yards passing and 44 yards total rushing. Those numbers will have to improve if they have any hope of leaving Mayfield with a victory. The Cardinals will possibly get some people back that have been injured, and that will only make them a more formidable opponent for the Yellowjackets. What do you think? I think we are going to have to throw this game out when it comes to “ how good are the Cardinals?”. This was a freak show that should have been played on halloween. That HAD to be a replacement at QB for the Falcons because he had serious problems catching the snap from his own center. And it was exactly that which led to scoring drives of 1, 5, 12, etc for the Cardinals. Snake was not making it up when he posted in the update thread on how Mayfield was scoring with so few plays run. This game had TWO safeties, and on the second one, Ft Campbell’s entire “punt-off” team ran onto the receiving end of the field where Mayfield already had positioned themselves. It might be one of the strangest games I have ever seen. Quite possibly stranger than fiction. ?

I'm hearing alot of crazy stuff coming from the PA announcer as we travel to different stadiums across western Kentucky, and so I wanted to ask if the rules concerning PA announcers has changed. From the NFHS website: “Announcer’s Responsibilities: The announcer’s role does not include “cheering the home team on” or otherwise inciting the crowd. Doing so is common at other levels of athletic events. But high school athletics is different because sports are educationally based. In a very real sense, the public address announcer at a high school event is a “Champion of Character”. He/she can influence the atmosphere of the contest by what is said and how it is said. The announcer who performs professionally promotes good sportsmanship by what he/she says and how he/she acts upon saying it.” Does this still apply? Some of our PA announcers have clearly taken over as THE cheerleader. Am I being a bit old fashioned about this?

The Falcons of Ft Campbell come to War Memorial this week for the final district game of 2025 season for the Class 2A first district race. Mayfield sits in first with a 7-1 record overall and 4-0 in the district. Ft Campbell comes in 3-5 overall and 2-1 in the district. Their only district loss being a 47-12 setback to Caldwell Co. Again, on paper this looks to be another mismatch as the Cardinals are the clear favorite. As you well know, we don’t play the games on paper. So, can the Falcons pull the upset? First, the folks at Trigg Co should teach classes to other schools on how to host a football game. They treated us like we were family. Second, the game itself was the mismatch we thought it was going to be. The Wildcats had too many players injured, and these were players that they could ill afford to lose. Edison is a tough running back that start for alot of teams. He was tackling practice for the Cardinal defense tonite. Lastly, Mayfield looked out of sorts at times tonite. We had some penalties that gave Trigg first downs in 3rd and long situations. We also had some of our protection of our QB break down at times which led to him being sacked. Those are just some things we need to work on. Its been awhile since we saw War Memorial, but we get to do that next friday against Ft. Campbell. Go Big Red!

This week the Cardinals will visit a former district rival that has now been renewed. Mayfield and Trigg County had some epic battles in the 70s with Mayfield winning all but one (as best I can remember). The Wildcats defeated Mayfield in 2004, and they may have played one time since. But it does not look to be the year for Trigg to beat the Cardinals again. After starting the season with a lopsided victory over Ohio County, they have lost every game since. Meanwhile, Mayfield sits atop the district and has “running-clocked” every district opponent so far. This one looks to be the same. Tell us what YOU think.

Both the Cardinals and the Tigers are coming off district wins as they prepare for their matchup this friday in Princeton. This game will decide who is District One champion and who is runner up. Mayfield has looked strong in all of their games this year with the exception of the game against Paducah. Caldwell has not played a as tough a schedule winning all of their games except one, and that was a loss to Union County. As of late, this game has not been closely played with Mayfield winning by comfortable margins. Will this year be different? Tell us what you think.

This looked like a mismatch and sure enough, it was. Mayfield secured a running clock with 4:41 left in the first quarter. All JV in the second half. Good job Baby Birds! Can’t say enough good things about the atmosphere at the game. The Elkton community does a really great job!
