I thought Owen County had too much going in, and they showed it. Oldham County cut off some of the interior passing into Williams, but his teammates showed they are much more than a one-man team. Fun atmosphere again, won't be shocked to see these two play again in the regional. I still believe South Oldham is the No. 2 team in the 8th Region, but Oldham County is solid and still has a lot to play for. Should be a great 8th Region tournament at Henry County! Districts will be fun, so let's get the post season started!

The observation is from one of my buddies who talks with the NKU coaches. THE NKU COACHES say their current players are more suited to D-2 than D-1, so go argue with them. I have not seen them play, nor do I have any interest in them. I just was saying Carson and Mason will start next year. Thanks.

From looking at this situation from way outside (from an 8th Region's perspective), I only hope the remainder of the Newport players can pull together in their upcoming district game against Bellevue. If they can somehow win that game, Newport will guarantee itself a berth in the regional and then anything can happen. The scary part for Newport, as I posted in another thread, is that exactly 40 years ago in 1976, Bellevue upset the Wildcats in the first round of the district. It should make for a great opener in that district when the Wildcats and Tigers battle for a berth in the regional. Can we see deja vu 40 years later?

Very good comparison to Newport's dilemma. Newport's population has also dramatically decreased over the years, to a point where what was once a large school in the 1970s has shrunk to almost an A enrollment today. Newport enjoyed a great basketball tradition under Stan Arnzen and later Bob Vanderpool when the high school was located in the west end of the city. Years later they built a nice school in the east end of Newport, but from what I have been told for years, that led many of the kids from the west end of Newport going to Holmes because Holmes was just as close as the new school in the east end. That makes a two-prong problem for Newport it appears, if you are losing kids to another school due to the location.

I agree with virtually all you said. I have noticed some feel entitled and do not appreciate the opportunity given them in sports. I am assuming that the particular player at Newport was given lots of chances, maybe too many. I do not know the circumstances other than re-reading over the threads from two months ago. It appears he was a transfer from another school in the 9th Region and given lots of chances which he promptly cast aside. Unfortunate. But I will also defend schools in the predicaments that a Newport finds itself with fielding sports these days. I am sure the coach wanted to do the right thing to help the kid as well as keep his team in contention for a regional run. That is a slippery slope and I do not envy that task for any coach. Tough situation that apparently has ended very sadly. It is not funny at all.

It was new for me as I do not have a chance to keep up with Newport on a daily basis. I would read the recent comments about "Wiggins" and thought it was just a joke, but it appears it was connected to one of the players who have caused some of the said problems this season.

No question after seeing the video clip it was basket interference, though I am not certain the ball was going in. Makes no difference as Hurt definitely goal-tended the ball by touching it with his hand through the cylinder. On the other hand (no pun intended), Hurt's play that forced overtime on the long pass is a classic. The 3/4 court pass is perfect, and Hurt does what great players do: He hit a huge, clutch shot to force OT. A heartbreaking loss for Holmes, which obviously had a tremendous team with Schloemer, Wimzie, Beal, Moeves, Malik, etc.

No holding back in this game. The Oldham County people feel slighted this season because of all the attention Owen County has deservedly gained. This will be an intense game, much like the South Oldham game last week. Oldham County is well-coached and will use multiple defenses tonight. I will be interested to see if they apply full court pressure on Owen County. Great game just several hours away. I am thinking SRO crowd.

I agree with you. Newport is a unique city and the school system faces challenges many do not understand. I grew up in another 9th Region city and we played Newport every year, and even 42-43 years ago there were challenges for the Wildcat coaches. I knew Bob Vanderpool and Jack Patterson back in the day, and they put together a program that was one of the 9th Region's best for a period of time. It sounds like the current coach has had to deal with a number of things this season. Unless things have really changed up there, Newport is much more difficult to maintain a program than Beechwood, Dixie or Lloyd. Simon Kenton is now in our region and I have never heard of any big problems from their staff or administration. Newport is a different situation, and people need to know it is a difficult job.

Get there early tonight if you want a seat. Oldham County will be bringing a ton of fans, and the Owen County people will be there in force. My pick is Owen County 68, Oldham County 52. Final home game in the O-Zone for Carson Williams. I like Oldham County's talent, they just have to find a rotation of 7-8 players to go with. I think they will slow the tempo down tonight to limit possessions, but asking a lot to win on senior night on the road.

From Day 1 he starts. He is a legit Division I player and Mason Faulkner will start as well.

The two Harrisons needed to stay in college to develop their games. I feel badly for them.

Sad situation. The "D" League is no fun for any of them. And they still have to pay their agents even if they are not in the NBA. Very sad.

Who said at-large? I think NKU can win that league next year with Williams, Faulkner and the big Alabama transfer who came with their coach this season. He had to sit out this season. Other than Valpo, the Horizon League is mediocre. Remember that Butler is no longer in that league, nor is Loyola of Chicago. When those two programs left, the Horizon became a lesser league. NKU can win it next year if Williams and Faulkner play like I expect. One of my buddies who follows NKU said they are going to have the Horizon Freshman of the Year this season, and he is nowhere as talented as either Williams or Faulkner. That should tell you a lot about how good NKU will be next year.

Next year with Williams and Faulkner joining, I can see NKU winning it. Other than Valpo, the Horizon is pretty ordinary.

Why would NKU never see the NCAA Tournament? They are eligible starting next season, and with Williams and Mason Faulkner joining their roster, I could see them winning the league they are in. Other than Valpo, it's a collection of has-beens (Detroit) and never-beens (Wright State, Oakland). NKU could win that league next year. From what I saw, they have won 5 or 6 games this season in that league with a roster of mostly D-2 types of players. Wait until the coach gets guys like Williams and Faulkner. They also have a transfer who played at Alabama sitting out, and he is apparently a big guy.

The "D" League with the Iowa Energy for one, bench time and one season for the other. LOL. Not much money in the "D" League, believe me. Both Harrisons were decent college players, nothing more. Both overrated badly by these "experts" who never played a minute of basketball. As for Coach Cal and Williams, wait five years and let's see how it plays out. By then, Coach Cal could be in Cleveland with Lebron.

That is a shame for the Wildcats. This late in the season is not the time to have drama occurring for a team. I did not realize there was a second key player missing. Could be an opportune time for the Bellevue Tigers to pull off a surprise in the district against Newport and get to the 9th Region tournament.

Great win for Augusta and fine season, they are on a roll. Newport, unfortunately, has now lost seven straight and nine of their last 11 games. Is it safe to assume Wiggins might have to suit up for another missing player in the district against Bellevue?
