All tournament team for Holy Cross Miyah Wimzie Aaliyah Hayes Aniyah Carter and MVP Julia Hunt Both teams played hard from the first whistle to the last. Pikeville was knocking down their shots and kept a slight lead through most of the game. They did extend it to seven in the third quarter but the Indians fought back. If I had to guess Pikeville outrebounded HC at least in the first three quarters. In the fourth quarter Hayes hit a three to get it down to one and it went back and forth but with less than a minute Nelson hit 1/2 free throws and the Panthers got the rebound but were unable to score and Hunt hit 2/2 free throws to ice the game with 2.6 seconds left. It was a great week of basketball. Congrats to both teams

Final All A Classic semifinal. The Indians started out slow again but once they hit their stride. Once again there were a ton of steals and points in transition. They didn’t really have an answer for Hunt or Williams length. It was 17-7 end of the first quarter and 41-15 at the half. The Indians subbed frequently and the subs/JV played the entire fourth quarter. On to the finals!

Owsley county came out hot and ended the first quarter winning 15 to 10. Holy Cross was leaving the back door open and they took advantage. They also hit three threes I believe. Owsley County did struggle at the line though. I don’t have exact numbers, but missed a lot of free throws. They could’ve had a bigger lead. In the second quarter Holy Cross turned up the pressure and started getting steals and points on transition. Holy Cross took the lead in the second quarter ending the half up 31-22. They pulled away after that. They were up 20 at the end of three and then started subbing with five minutes left in the fourth with the JV finishing the last couple minutes of the game. Aniyah Carter and Julia Hunt had a bunch of points. Holy Cross did not shoot well from the three today but points on transition won them the game. Of note D’Myah Williams is back after sitting out over nine months with an ACL tear. She gives the Indians much-needed depth and greater ability to sit Hunt for rest from time to time Next up Nicholas County.

Final from Park Hills. It was a hard fought game from the beginning. Holy Cross’s defense gave NDA all kinds of fits. In the first half Holtzapfel hit a couple of three and in the second half HC did a much better job trapping her any time she got the ball. Wimzie from HC did a nice job in her free throws hitting 5/6. With Nelson also hitting all but one when NDA was fouling at the end. It was a slow paced game. Murphy let Holy Cross rundown 45 seconds at the end of each of the first 3 quarters. That gave Holy Cross a chance to rest since they were only playing six. Reality is though this was a pride game nothing more than that. The real game will come in districts to see who can get that first seed for regionals, good job to both teams.

Kinney injured his ankle in the second quarter of the game against Holy Cross the night before. This was a less than 24 hour turnaround for Newport so no opportunity for it to be ready to play on.

George Rogers Clark playing without Byars. Very sloppy game all around. There were some interesting calls for sure. Holy Cross was winning 51 to 41 at the end of the third quarter. HC could not score the fourth quarter. GRC called off the press fourth quarter HC had a tough time scoring with a half court offense. Holy Cross once again missed too many layups. They did better from the three-point line. But were out scored 18 to 6 in the fourth quarter. One interesting call Holy Cross has the ball up two I believe with a couple minutes left in the game number 10 for GRC gets her fifth foul. Either the scorer didn’t tell the refs the refs didn’t notice or something happened. She proceeds to stay in the game with Holy Cross on offense. Holy Cross misses a shot. She gets a rebound is fouled by Julia Hunt. At this time it’s realized that she was playing with 5 fouls. I don’t know what the official ruling is when that happens but Julia Hunt got a foul and a jump ball was called with GRC getting the ball. They proceeded to score and tie the game. Holy Cross had the ball with a tie game and 36 seconds. They called time out with 19 seconds. Get the ball stolen with 11 seconds. George Rogers Clark comes down and shoots a layup and gets fouled. Then shoots the ball and goes in. They wave off the basket because of the foul but allowed the time to run down to two seconds. They make both free throws. Time at time of foul was at least 4 to 7 seconds depending upon who you ask. Holy Cross gets the ball with only 2.4 seconds. They get a decent three-point shot off just after the buzzer buzzes doesn’t count lose by two.

This discussion came up at the Holy Cross Beachwood game. They are scheduled to play later in the year for district seeding. Unfortunately, Beachwood lost a couple of their top players to injury this year making the game really lopsided. They didn’t even score against Holy Cross’s starters with the score being 28 to nothing in the first quarter. it’s obviously not always like this, but this year was the perfect storm.

I hate this. It has been discussed ad nauseam, but first of all, I agree they should have just ceded the seeding game and moved on. As for Ashland, there are ways to avoid doing this to teams. Watch the first two games HC played in the All A. They could have had scores like this but didn't.

Yep NCC won the two years before Holy Cross’s current three peat and Holy Cross won the year before that.

Three in a row. They barely lost to NCC the year before that. NCC and HC have pretty much dominated the 9th region All A

Final from the All A region 9 finals. NCC came out hot with Brannen hitting a couple of threes in the first quarter. HC was up 26-13 then NCC cut the lead. Holy Cross pressed and scored a ton on transition. In the second and third quarters the Indians pulled away and ran up a 30 point lead. They never got the running clock but with a little over 3 minutes left Coach Arlinghaus put in the JV. NCC turned up the heat by pressing with the varsity still in. I don’t have scoring but Brannen had three threes and at least another basket. Eaglin was their leading scorer but a bunch were in the last three minutes of the game when the HC JV had a hard time getting the ball up the court and scoring against NCC’s starters. Final from the All A regional semifinal. The Indians get the winner of NCC and Ludlow tomorrow in the finals. The Tigers had a tough time scoring with the first quarter ending at 28-0. The subs started for the Indians early and often again with the JV probably logging the same amount of minutes as the starters. The Indians missed a lot of layups though. They need to clean that up against better opponents.

Final from the All A regional quarterfinal. Bellevue fought hard but the Indians were just too much. Holy Cross subbed early and often playing ten girls in the first half. The starters went in briefly in the third quarter to get the running clock then the mass substitutions began. At least 11 girls scored with Paige Arlinghaus getting her first varsity points. Next up for the Indians Beechwood in the semifinals on Friday.

Final from a game played at Ryle. Butler will be playing Ryle tomorrow. Holy Cross has the 9th region All A tournament starting next week.

I know people who have been involved in the program for the past two decades. While Coach Koz has a strong personality, many of their coaches have been there for quite awhile. Coach Moore "Coach Fee" has been there forever. Tragically Coach Lamar died a couple of years ago and Coach James retired due to age/health reasons, Coach Lehmkuhl took a hiatus from 2012-2019 to spend more time with his kids but came back when his son started high school. Off the top of my head I don't remember any mass exodus of coaches although I could be wrong. I do think that all options should be considered for head coach. Maybe it will be Adam maybe not but I agree it should not be assumed to be Adam's job.

True they have a lot to work on. Specifically I thought they did a good job pressuring the ball and creating turnovers. Of course playing that type of defense leaves people open so they need to do a better job of covering the open man. These high level events expose the deficiencies that need to be worked on and help teams prepare for the end of the season when it matters most.

Final from QOC. Once again, the Indian defense was their strong point. They had lots of intercepted passes and steals. The McCracken county did a good job shutting down Hunt with a zone in the first half. They have the size to surround her and make it hard to feed inside. The first quarter was played fairly even. McCracken county had a 10 point lead at the half off and increased it to 17 after the third quarter. The Indians made a couple of runs, but we weren’t quite able to get over the hump and catch up. Now a couple days rest for the Indians and then preparation for Butler next week.

Final from the Queen of the commonwealth. The Indians played very well defensively. It was a physical game. Not a ton of fouls called. There was an interesting double foul called at one point where one ref called a charge and one called a block so they called two fouls and then the offense of team kept the ball. I was pretty happy with the energy level the Indians were able to keep up after getting home at 1 AM yesterday and having exams this morning. Player for the game for Holy Cross with Aumani Nelson.. Final from Queen of the Commonwealth. This was a back-and-forth close game. In my opinion very ugly with lots of turnovers and lots of missed shots for both teams. Whimzie from Holy Cross was in foul trouble early and Nelson picked up her fourth foul early in the fourth quarter, which limited Holy Cross’s defense. It was tied at 38 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter when Whimzie fouled out for Holy Cross. They struggled getting any kind of offense after that. Boyd county pulled away for the win. Holy Cross is next game is tomorrow at 8:30.

Final from Queen of the Commonwealth. The Banshees were playing without Leah Macy which obviously is a game changer. The Indians couldn't miss from the three in the first quarter and played some tough defense allowing for quite a few baskets in transition. At the end of the first quarter it was 33-12. They extended the lead to 56-24 at the half and cruised in the second half. There was a running clock in the fourth quarter so they were able to rest some key starters for tomorrow and give some of the younger players a chance to get some reps. Next up for HC the winner of Manual and Boyd County.
