Back to this year's tournament, is it correct that it is CovCath v. Highlands in the finals Monday night? I assume covered by CovCath Internet radio?

Just curious, is running clock still at 35? How much does the lead have to be cut down before it stops running? And I do agree, Walton is tough. Even without Miles, they have a good shot at their first regional championship in 70 years. Sure would be nice to have him on the floor, though....

I would bet that all 3 officials do, in fact, "know someone who went" to Highlands. So I'm not sure the source is bad. On the other hand, if just KNOWING someone that went to a school is enough to impute bias for an official, we aren't gonna have very many officials in NKY.

I won't comment on the propriety of the technical, but the foul absolutely had to be called. It wasn't just end of the half, swallow your whistle kind of contact. She got destroyed just to the right of the top of the key.

I was told Holy Cross's win in 2016 was their first ever frosh regional championship. But it sure makes sense that they would have won it in 1969, since they won the region in 1972 ... I think that banner is up at Holy Cross, but the players on that team escape me. Rump maybe? Fortner?

Beechwood has a pretty significant frosh playing up (Draud) and St. Henry has at least a couple (Vieth and Bessler). 2021 9th region class is gonna be a little more balanced, and better, than it has been recently.

Not necessarily. If the hearing officer rules finds that the transfer was "athletically motivated" under bylaw 6, section 3, then the "change of address" exemption under section 2 can be nullified. See the Dakota Euton case, among others. Honestly, the KHSAA has TREMENDOUS discretion under its bylaws to declare kids eligible or not eligible. Frequently, in my opinion, it abuses the discretion, one way or another, and court intervention is required. A massive overhaul and re-thinking of the standards is warranted if you ask me.

To clear things up a little, Macke did play in the regional. Young guards spark Holy Cross in first-round win at 9th Region girls’ basketball tournament | NKyTribune She also played varsity softball. The Campbell Circuit Court cleared her to play, finding the KHSAA ruling her ineligible to be arbitrary and capricious, in a case that may wind up having far reaching effects. The legal analysis goes way beyond this thread. In fact, she had nothing to do with the outcome of this game. Highlands is very good, with or without her, and Zoie Barth made a ridiculous step back 3 to win this one over a good Dixie team, and I say ridiculous because it took moxie and skill to create a little space, take the shot, and make it. I will leave my comments there, and look forward to the rest of the season.

A little puzzled by the failure to mention the #1 tight end recruit in the nation here ... surely Michael Mayer will add a little to the receiving corps ...

Having AAU kids on your high school team matters, it just does. You can argue chicken or the egg, but school teams with a higher number of AAU players will consistently win over teams with lesser, or no, AAU players. And you need not just look at the 9th region. CovCath, Cooper both have lots of AAU kids. So does Newport. In the 10th, I'm very familiar with AAU kids at Pendleton, Campbell, Scott, GRC. Its not a coincidence that those school teams are enjoying success during the winter.

Great showing by Campbell County. I would hope this would slow down the talk of Mercer and SHA being the two best teams, head and shoulders above everyone else, and how it would be such a travesty if they wound up on the same side of the Sweet 16. But I digress. Great job, both teams, in this one. On the road, against Sacred Heart, if I'm Campbell, I take my chances with a game winner by Clos every day and twice on Sunday. I second the opinion about Clos for Ms. Basketball, as well. If there was any doubt, putting 29 up on the road in this game should have removed it.

Love to see Mallory Holbrook shooting the ball well. She may be the key to how far Campbell County goes. Clos, Stapleton and Schwarber are a fantastic first three options, but some good teams may find a way to limit them. If Mallory is a threat and can force teams to extend out to guard her, that will make a huge difference for the big three.

Can someone give educated guesses ... I will start with region 9 Ryle, region 10 Campbell county and region 8 Simon kenton (with the added qualification that I always refrain from building expectations for my own school)... SK v Ryle would be an interesting first round matchup....

I do not agree. His offensive game lacks refinement, and is not on a par with his defensive skills, but no way would I call it a liability. And what I mean by that is even if he could not play defense, he still is on the floor, posting up and being the first option. I have seen his offensive skills be the deciding factor in very, very high caliber AAU games, posting up and finishing and at the free throw line. In high school basketball, I would take his offensive package every day and twice on Sunday. It could be better, I will grant you that, but still not anywhere near a liability, in my opinion, of course.

Okay, I guess I was wrong about Campbell JV .... I was given bad info by a source that I would have thought was beyond reproach (apparently he is within reproach) ... My bad ... Now having offered the full measure of contrition, could you tell me what Campbell's JV record and who has beaten them? Because they did look like a pretty good JV team.

I agree ... While I'm not a big fan of the KHSAA, I also thought the comment about the KHSAA "screwing it up" was off base by someone that didn't understand that the state tournament is not, has never been and never will be seeded. Luck of the draw ...
