  1. It's a scrimmage against one of Ohio's best teams. No way to judge the season. I think they will be better than many think. Can they beat CovCath, who knows at this point. CovCath played an overmatched NewCath team so you can't judge them as well. Too early to tell anything.

  5. I'm surprised that the Mayfield fans aren't eating this up!!! HC has talent without a doubt, but I don't think they rank in the top 6 in 2A as far as talent goes. Mayfield, LCA, CAL, DeSales, Danville and NCC have more talent, top to bottom.
  6. I agree 100%. NCC will load the box until HC throws them out of it. On the other side of the ball, NCC does throw the ball very well either. The have the QB and receivers to throw the ball but the passing plays they run are poorly designed or not well executed. The slot receiver is open every time and he never gets the ball. They never run motion or move their playmakers around the formations. Two very poor passing teams that rely on the run, makes for an interesting Friday night in Newport
  7. This game is a toss up IMO. The team that stops the run, wins. If HC can't get the running game going early, NCC wins. If NCC can't get the run going, HC wins. NCC can't throw the ball and HC hasn't shown much of a passing game all year. It should be a good one. Both teams have questionable play calling at best.
  8. Are you saying that Lloyd needs to run the ball straight at NewCath? I think that would be a big mistake. NewCath does a great job stopping the run. That is one of their strengths. The formula to beat NewCath is very very simple. Spread them out with 4-5 wide and over load one side of the formation. This leaves your best WR in single coverage all night long. If NewCath tries to shade with Safety help, you exploit the over load and hit the slot receiver. Doing this, opens up the run and keeps them guessing on defense. Beechwood ran this plan to perfection. They moved their best player around the field and exposed NewCath's weakness, which is defending the pass. It has been their Achilles heel for several years now. Defending NewCath's offense is another story. It starts with play calling and putting the kids in the right play and that is not a given every week. If the OC is one his game, they are tough to beat. If the OC continues to roll the QB out to the same side of the field on long passing downs, NewCath beats themselves. IMO, I picked NewCath to win this one but wouldn't be surprised if they have some trouble getting it done. Lloyd is playing without a key COG and the kicking game will hamper them in the end.

  10. Are you serious?? The play calling was down right terrible!! It's been terrible for the last several years and tonight it really showed. Beechwood had a simple game plan that was well executed and aided by the play calling. They put a spy on Henschen and set the edge, forcing him back to middle of the defense. The screen game doesn't work when the defense knows it's coming! The abandoned the run before attempting to get it started. Just look at how many carries Kelly and Decker had and most of them were on the final two drives. How many times did he rollout Henschen into the blitz? Why not run up tempo and not huddle? Why not throw quick passes from the pocket to loosen up the run?
  11. Well played game by the tigers. NCC should be embarrassed. Playing calling was terrible to say the least. Those kids never had a chance with plays being called. Who goes for it on 4th and 4 inside your own 30 yd line, trailing by only 14?? This team will be lucky to get pass Lloyd, much less Holy Cross. The kids were screwed over by their coaches tonight. How much more of this can NCC fans take? A 5th grader could have called a better game than this one tonight. Hats off the Beechwood. Great game plan and even better execution.
  12. I don't know if NewCath has a true advantage. They stop the run very well so maybe they can make Beechwood one dimensional and blitz more but other than that, I don't really see one. I have seen both teams play more than once, and nothing jumps off the page at me.
  13. This is a very simple game to break down. Two very good teams that are well coached and battle tested. For NewCath to win the following has to happen: 1.) Find a way to defend the Beechwood Passing attack. This has been NewCath's problem all year. They are terrible against defending the pass and this is Beechwood's strength. They have shown that they can stop the run. 2.) NewCath has to establish the run game on offense to set up the pass game which has been another problem for them. Henshen has to stand in the pocket and throw the ball. He can't be gun shy. If he refuses the throw the ball, then you have to go to Cain, IMO. Yes, he's a great runner but that's not their style. Let Kelly and Decker handle the ground game and throw the ball when your receivers are open. 3.) Playing calling has to improve. All to often, they find something that works, but they stop calling it for whatever reason. They try to get way too cute at times. For Beechwood to win: 1.) Establish the run to make your excellent passing game even harder to defend. Get NCC guessing on defense. 2.) Put pressure on Henshen and put a spy on him, with the anticipation that he looks to run first, even on obvious passing downs. 3.) Control the tempo of the game. NCC doesn't score quickly. They are good at putting together long drives. If you can put pressure on them to speed up their game plan, it doesn't suit NCC well.

  18. NewCath is going to struggle to score against CC if they can't develop the passing game. He throws a great deep ball but struggles to hit the short and intermediate routes. He is too good to throw for 30yds in a game like he did against Cooper. The Breds are also plagued by their OC and his inability to call plays. They continue to slow the pace down and abandon the run game when they are moving the football. As long as he continues to call the plays, NewCath is limited in what they can do.
