This is always a great game - one I look forward to all year. Both teams are playing well. I expect another classic battle.

If I counted that up right Lawnboy ... Beechwood 12 wins NCC 10 since 2000.

7 state championships and 10 state runners up since 2000 between the two of them.

Great rivalry that is always cleanly played. Just hoping both teams come out healthy.

Early poll voting heavily favoring Newport Catholic. Is Beechwood that big of an underdog in this one?

I'm not one to comparing scores but one to compare games... Beechwood did not stop the running game of holy cross while New Cath did it's fair share of containing it... But New Caths style of play is similar to Beechwood so this game will be a dandy.. New Cath may have a better running game but Beechwood may have a better passing game..

I think this is game is belong to New Cath 24-14

I have seen both play this year. I encourage a fast start for the team that wants to win. Coming from behind may be difficult. Both teams have a tendency to put the pedal down when ahead.

Beechwood has the offense to come from behind. They have a very good passing game this year. Beechwood's defense has played very well all year. They need to avoid giving up big plays. Very few times has a team had a long sustained drive for a TD against Beechwood. This game is almost always a close game. It should be this year too.

Game day. This thread has been a little quiet. Any last minute thoughts or predictions? What are the key matchups to watch tonight? Does either team have an advantage that is going to give the other team problems?

^ I agree it is quite for a game like this...

This is a very simple game to break down. Two very good teams that are well coached and battle tested.

For NewCath to win the following has to happen: 1.) Find a way to defend the Beechwood Passing attack. This has been NewCath's problem all year. They are terrible against defending the pass and this is Beechwood's strength. They have shown that they can stop the run. 2.) NewCath has to establish the run game on offense to set up the pass game which has been another problem for them. Henshen has to stand in the pocket and throw the ball. He can't be gun shy. If he refuses the throw the ball, then you have to go to Cain, IMO. Yes, he's a great runner but that's not their style. Let Kelly and Decker handle the ground game and throw the ball when your receivers are open. 3.) Playing calling has to improve. All to often, they find something that works, but they stop calling it for whatever reason. They try to get way too cute at times.

For Beechwood to win: 1.) Establish the run to make your excellent passing game even harder to defend. Get NCC guessing on defense. 2.) Put pressure on Henshen and put a spy on him, with the anticipation that he looks to run first, even on obvious passing downs. 3.) Control the tempo of the game. NCC doesn't score quickly. They are good at putting together long drives. If you can put pressure on them to speed up their game plan, it doesn't suit NCC well.

I have seen them both play and I see this being a back yard brawl! I will say the last team with the ball wins.
