Well...that's because I was pretty sore that our team lost like that. I actually tried to have my post removed, but it was too late. As I said, I meant no disrespect to Wayne Co team. They truly played the whole time and never gave up. The strategy to slow the game and drive the lane to get fouled was the right call for the team and it shows how well coached and smart the players were to be able to flawlessly execute this for such an extended period of time. The abilities of the players, coaches, and the way they played I never faulted and I greatly respect their effort. I still disagree with the way I thought the officiating seemed imbalanced, but I'm sure WC fans would feel the same if the outcome were different. You pretty much said that the officials give unsolicited favorable calls to the home team because that is who grades them ... and that's the way I saw it too. Dunbar I think actually had 3 foul out and 3 with 4 fouls.

No, it states that there actually must be contact for a foul to be committed, not on plays where the official thinks there is going to be contact and then there isn't. That a player needs to actually display unsporting conduct to receive a technical, not when a player says "They're cheating" in a soft undirected voice in the lane after one and a half quarters of the other team going to the line to shoot a free throw or two after every single possession. That a player needs to actually be guarded for 5 seconds continuously without break to get charged with a turnover. I always try to give the officials the benefit of a doubt and feel that they never intentionally call an unbalanced game. I just can't believe that this would actually occur on purpose. In this game though, Dunbar was up 23 easy at the half. Wayne had absolutely no answer for Darius Williams. He was scoring at will. They could not handle Dunbar's press and had difficulty breaking the half court zone. The only way Wayne could get back into the game was the constant calls by the officials and the lackluster job of making identical calls for Dunbar - including the last play of the game where Tayvion Hollingsworth was hacked on the last second layup for a no call when just 8 seconds before the identical call was given to the Wayne county boy to take the lead on free throws. There is no way to describe this unless a person was actually at the game. Wayne County went to the line on literally EVERY play for the last quarter and a half of the game. It's hard to defend the basketball when the other team is only shooting free throws. It's hard to push the ball when the play is stopped on EVERY possession. I'm sure I come off like a sore loser, but ANYONE unbiased at the game would call to question the motives on display with the referees in this game. Here's a comment made by the official to one of the players "That may not get called in the 11th, but we call it here in the 12th...." and then on the next play the ref actually doesn't make that call on the identical play for Dunbar. Is there a different set of regional rules used by the officials in the 12th region?

I will say that Wayne Co boys never quit...and that is very admirable and they also were excellent from the free throw line. I certainly dont mean to disrespect their team.

Exciting game. I have a question about rules that came from this game. Early in the first half, one of the LCA coaches was instructing some of his players and waving his arm toward the Dunbar lane. He had his back turned to the play and did not see what was happening on the court. Dunbar made a pass to one of their players down the court and the ball was accidentally swatted away by the coach while he was waving his arms. The ball was still inbounds when the coach deflected it and the coach was clearly out of bounds, but his arm did protrude into the field of play. Regardless of what the refs actually called on this what is the correct call?

Your probably right that it has made me a little emotional. I'm not in disagreement that he shouldn't be allowed to play at Georgetown if he doesn't have a residency there. Just makes me mad the way it all developed. The point I'm making is that there should be a way to resolve this issue before it gets to this point.

I'm stating that its a real sad gesture to try to seek revenge on a child because you are upset at a decision they made...whether right or wrong. "Break the rules, pay the consequence" is convenient to say when you are trying to justify a childish action. Do you think HC would pursue the rules committee so intently if it was the other way around? If they had a kid playing in their program whose parent don't have residency within the district? I'm pretty sure they wouldnt, so don't try to tell me that it's all about following the rules. I'll stand up for DJ's integrity. He is a fine child and should not be disrespected on the internet because the HC coach has a personal vendetta against him leaving the team. As far as lessons go...what lesson is it that you guys feel like he should learn? Is it that if you don't let someone take advantage of your talents and abilities that you may not get to do something you love? I know for a fact that there was very little interest in trying to develop DJ in Harrison County. That was until the staff realized that he might help them get out of the region. I'm thinking this was sometime early to mid last year. I am actually not a fan of transfers, because I think it takes away from kids who are in programs from the start, but it sounds like in DJ's case it was the right decision after all. There was obviously something that DJ wasn't getting in the "fine" Harrison County ball club that made him desire to leave. And the actions of the HC coaching staff just reiterated his concerns. An adult and responsible coach would try to understand what those needs are and help to facilitate the players desires. DJ is a really good player. Was he getting scouted at HC? Was he getting more development to his game? Was he able to continue to learn from the coaching staff there to continually improve his basketball skills? Were they helping him to grow and achieve his goals after HS? These are the types of things a coach should be trying to understand and help with in each player. Instead of trying to assist the kid, it seems as though coach Kendall allowed his emotions to get in the way and did everything he could to ruin the kids chances once he realized that he wasn't going to play for him. Act like an adult, show some class, and treat these kids with a little more concern. The only lesson that you guys have taught him now is that you can't trust anyone. Good job there.

So far, I wouldn't have anything to contradict your point...I really hope you end up eating those words at end of the season though. On the other hand, I thought St X looked pretty good. They seemed to hit all their shots and free throws, played really fundamentally sound, moved to the basket well without the ball (over and over and over), and always seemed to find the open man. #11 for St X was on point last night .

In my opinion whether you play man 2 man or zone is kind of irrelevant. The key to defense is actually playing defense. Even in a zone the defender still needs to be able to guard the man that is in their zone. I actually think that playing a zone defense is fundamentally harder than man 2 man, because you have to identify which player to guard each time a player comes into your zone and when to pass him back off to a teammate when he leaves your zone. There may be less movement across the floor, but there needs to be much more awareness and the actual defending part should be no different. To me, the biggest problem these days is a defensive players lack of desire to actually stay on defense and play defense. So many times in high school ball and during the summer especially, I see a kids man get by them and they just run back to get on offense. Talent is too good to think that a person will never get beat off the dribble and there isn't much you can do when your screened off the ball, but the key to a good defender is being able to react onto the opening created by the play. Expect your help to pick up the man you were on and then switch over and block out his player. Whether a team is playing in man to man coverage or any type of zone just determines what part of the floor they are going to cover. Once you identify the person that you are defending; whether it be a set person each play or an individual that comes into you area of coverage, the defender still has to break down, deny the passing lanes, deny the penetration, and actually defend the ball. The fundamental that is being forgotten is to actually defend the opponent. In response to the actual question, I would say that a gimmick defense is one that creates imbalance in the defense. Such as putting two men on a single post player and leaving 3v4 on the rest of the team, or a box and one where you are not necessarily respecting the presence of defenders in the zone, but trying to focus on 1 player. We had a situation in youth league where we had to go 4 on 5 due to lack of players...this was gimmicky I think also.

The way I understand it, this is an event being organized and promoted by private individuals which make up the first part of a series of 3 events held within Kentucky. The individuals putting this on are not a part of KY HS basketball. They have put up funds for all the travel and lodging of all the teams involved. I think it was offered to Dunbar to host this event as a fundraiser from concessions and a portion of the gate (I'm not really sure on the gate, I wasn't listening very closely). The reason that teams from Ky aren't competing is that it is against KHSAA rules to play teams that do not have standing with their state high school athletics association, which some of these teams do not and the pairings were random I believe. I think that if this event is held next year, that there will be effort to get KHSAA approval for Kentucky teams to participate; but it is too late for this year. From what I saw in the news, the other to events in this series are the Marshall County Hoop Fest and McCracken County Festival of Hoops, but I don't know anything about the teams in those tournaments.

The player was Jeremy Ward (33). He was attempting to block a shot early in the first quarter on a fast break and flipped upside down hitting his head first and then rolling his neck over as the rest of his body came down. It honestly scared the crap out of me and his mother. They checked him out at UK ER and there was no damage on either the MRI or X-ray which was a big relief. He's at home with a concussion today and should be able to return in a week or two once he recovers and is cleared by the doctor. Big thanks to Dunbar trainers and staff. They were excellent in keeping him immobilized and under care until the emergency units arrived. I didn't see the rest of the game.

Spaulding probably is the difference maker on the team; but from the little I've seen of them, #24 (Evan Hall I think) is the one that does all the WORK that makes the team go.
