  1. Well that could be code for I showed lack of intestinal fortitude to stand up for my football coach and now that he knows I conspired behind his back (with no communication) to take away spring practice I need to backpedal since I must look this guy in the eye daily and know that he knows what I really am. Or maybe not.:no::no:
  2. Spring football is a GREAT benefit to teaching fundamentals of football. Anyone that does not understand how important teaching of fundamentals is to this sport probably is just a casual fan or has not been part of really good football in my opinion. And that is fine but I guarantee you most successful experienced coaches will understand how critical good fundamentals are to having a successful program year in and year out. I don't think all schools have to do it so don't use it if you don't want to. That is pretty simple. But to me it is critical to develop fundamentals for safety and good football. If you add up 3 years of good solid fundamentals an average kid can become pretty good and a pretty good kid can become an excellent football player. Just my thoughts. It is pretty obvious reading on the list serv that coaches in Kentucky are greatly in favor of spring football.
  3. Does anyone know how long Walter Brugh was at Paintsville?
  4. Three to check are Sam Harp at Danville, Dudley Hilton at Bell and Sam Simpson at Henry Clay. Also. Tim Schlosser was head coach here for 14 seasons and was an assistant for at least 3 seasons prior to that. MacDon can be more exact than me on that number.
  5. That is a good question. I have some idea but don't know for sure.
  6. Discussions are coming up soon. Keep the communication to your connections to voice opinions.
  7. We went to Flag football this year up through second grade. No tackle until 3rd. Our numbers increased. I am going to make a few more adjustments to those age groups this year to improve and hopefully continue to increase numbers. Also, what I did is if a kid's parents really wanted that child to play tackle i considered the kid's age, size and parent situation etc.. I was pretty satisfied with the result.
  8. Truly amazing career!! Just a down to earth nice man that should be in the Hall of Fame if he isn't already.
  9. And another thought. You point out the size of that crowd that came out for the game; which is great! That money is what the KHSAA wants their hands on. And I get it that they have to generate money to pay bills but don't pull this seeding idea to help with making money in the finals. It is not the answer to the money problem. We are now streaming the finals and all that kind of stuff which is hurting attendance at our level just like it is at the college level. Did anyone see the sad size of crowds at many of these college games. Heck often they can't give away tickets at some of these places.
  10. And that is the biggest of two obvious problems. There is no such system. So it puts the traditional powers at an advantage year in and year out imo. Which kills football as a whole in the excitement department. For example, I have only watched the 6A game when Meade Co and Scott County played in the last probably 15 years (roughly) because it's the same old thing with Trinity or X most likely winning. Nothing against them except the outcome is a done deal. That will happen in the other classes more than it does now if seeding is used in my opinion.
  11. And you my friend have nailed the exact reason they are trying to do this!! If the KHSAA thinks more people will come to see the same teams year after year win the state championship they are way out of touch. It's those teams that haven't made it much or ever that bring the whole county due to excitement. I think we could be the only state where the folks in charge are actually trying to 'rig' the thing to keep the 'haves' in the best position to get to the finals. I would imagine the easy example is that all 6A schools from now and forever will make their way to Louisville in the Semi-finals and possibly never host a semifinal game and weaken their chances to get to the finals even more. Wow. Talk about unsportsmanlike conduct. If the KHSAA is in such desperate shape for money maybe they need to look at other avenues to cut cost or generate money. They are not going to get it from the average fan or the purchasing of coaches tickets each year imo.
  12. Absolutely correct!! Call your building AD and get them to express your concerns to the District AD. There are way more high schools playing football than the 7 or 8 that are represented on the advisory committee. And I will point out it is not their fault either. They are not elected so they are not in any way required to ask the rest of us what we think or for our input. I have no personal issue with anyone involved because they are good people and some great coaches involved and several are my personal friends. But it is not fair that all football playing schools were not advised of this idea and given a chance to have input. Imagine having to travel from Eastern Kentucky to far western Kentucky if the so called seedings match it up like that. 8-9 hour trip on game day or on Thanksgiving day? And as you clearly point out the 'haves' will always get the seed over the 'have nots'. This is high school football not NCAA Divsion 1 football. By the way D1 finally has recognized their problem with using polls to set up their championships and are slowly moving away from that. And they are playing those games in neutral settings.
  13. Not about me being better or worse or my opinion being accepted by you or anyone else. It is just the way it is. That is how I see it. To many times loopholes give an advantage to some schools. Not blaming your school or any one person. We all know by 2019 this schools numbers are not going to be 4A but they won't be the first to get this advantage. Not a personal attack.
  14. Here is how absurd Max Preps ratings are. Even after defeating Johnson Central head to head and winning the state championship Johnson Central and Wayne County are ranked ahead of Franklin-Simpson in the final Max Preps Poll. That is why seeding using polls does not make any sense.
  15. Travel could actually be an even bigger problem on Thanksgiving weekend. Think about this. I will use FSHS as an example. I suspect most had us picked as the 4th best team in the semi-finals in 4A this year and Johnson Central as the 1 seed. So on Thanksgiving we would have had to practice and do our normal thing. The next day my team has to make at a minimum 5 hour trip to play JC. That is not reasonable or fair to our team when compared to how the system is set up now. My first thought is that we would go up somewhere close the night before and get hotel rooms...but do we really want the teams and coaches traveling 5 hours Thanksgiving night (or any for that matter) if we don't have to. I do understand that these scenarios do happen but why make it more likely by seeding. The seeding isn't near the issue as the travel. So we have to have neutral sites like the finals for it to be fair imo. Also, these polls often favor one or two teams at the top when teams are close in record etc. That is just the way it is as we know.
  16. There has to be a reason for seeding in the final 4. Could someone on the football advisory committee please post an answer to a couple of things if you don't mind. 1. Was there any polling or communication to the states other head coaches for input on if we were for or against seeding (I might have missed it but I don't recall any communication on that)? 2. What was the thinking/reasoning among the committee that led to their recommendation to seed the semi-finals? Knowing these 2 questions might not get others to agree with this but it would at least help us know the thinking and the process used by the football advisory committee members. If you are not comfortable posting an answer on BGP please e mail me at doug.preston@simpson.kyschools.us or just send a PM here on BGP. Thanks
  17. Is Fred Douglas really going to have 4A numbers. They currently play 6A I think. So wouldn’t their numbers increase as the school gets the next year or 2 under their belt? School isn’t splitting it’s new evidentially with 6A numbers now. This one out of all of the schools is strange to me. Anybody got any ideas or understanding on that situation?
  18. Oh heck; just ranting! We will probably always be a 4 seed after that if we are fortunate enough to get that far. :( :isurrender::isurrender::isurrender:
  19. Why would the KHSAA want to get into seeding based on things not on the field of play? No matter how you cut it computer rankings are a joke imo. Most years rankings are laughable and sad at the same time when you actually see some teams in person in some cases. Rankings by people who never see the team play. Really? I tell our kids that rankings mean nothing; it's how you practice and play that matters. If you had seen us play week one this year you would have thought we would be lucky to go .500. To survive times like this things like coaching, commitment, effort and love for your teammates are factors that should carry the kids forward to getting as close to their potential as possible. But that doesn't matter with seeding. We would be 'punished' for week one in week 14. So all that improvement still doesn't completely erase that one week or in our case the first five this year. Our goal is to improve each week and hit our stride in week 10-12. I guess that has to change. The running clock now becomes a factor as well as the score. So holding down scores goes out the window and now high school kids and coaches will have to do what quality programs/coaches try not to do and that is destroy/embarrass your opponent. Why would the KHSAA want to try to dictate who plays who? There has to be some underlying reason for this and I have not heard any legitimate reason at this point. We all have witnessed how bad seeding has been in history for picking champions based on computer ratings. We are not the NCAA but this model seems to be borrowing from Division 1's bad system. Let the kids decide not politics. And if the comment by Tackett was really as vague as i read on another post that means they made this decision without a true plan on how to even do this. We as a state change our playoff format more than any place I know. There is always some 'new' idea every few years? Why do we need to do this constant tweaking of the system? It seems as though there is a philosophy that being an experiment is a good thing. This is kind of like a few years ago when nobody would be able to shake hands after the game anymore or when they had the terrible idea to cross bracket our district opponents in the first two rounds instead of the opposing district a few years further back. Those short lived bad ideas seemed to fit this same type of thinking. I guess on the flip side of that is if you are the best you will win regardless. But then again the rankings can be way off at times which means the state championship could just as well be played in the semifinals or the finals. Then there is the home field advantage question. How fair is that in this plan. I have some ideas on why they are doing this that I won't list because they won't be received very well. That's my two cents and two cents buys you nothing in 2018. Back to work developing kids which is what is most fun for me.
  20. Just my opinion but I don't think any program can have a head coach or assistants that just sit back and take it easy. In order to play at a high level you need everybody doing their part. Some are in better shape with Admin. and support from QB club and community that is for sure. But I have always prided myself on putting in the time above and beyond what some might think I should. Our assistant coaches do as well. I think the off the field work and off season are critical areas. Merry Christmas coaches.
  21. We have breakfast for the players from our QB club in the morning then we go out and practice. It’s a great honor to practice on Thanksgiving.
  22. All Sky Picks From Franklin-Simpson: Dion Pearson - DT Jack Randolph - OL Shawn Woods - OL Dalton Hunter _OL Tre Bass - RB Carlos - McKinney - RB Collin Preston - DE Cade Harvey - LB Saul Brady - DB
  23. Yep. That's where we are at. Sad! The game is safer now than ever before.
