I'm not an expert but I disagree with all who say it is not a balk. I agree that a pitcher can step towards second base and not make a throw. However, if he steps towards second base AND throws the ball, he has to throw it to second base. He cannot, step towards second base and throw the ball to third base. By throwing the ball to the shortstop he is NOT throwing to the base that he stepped towards. All of this has to happen with his foot on the rubber. Obviously if he takes his foot off of the rubber then he in an infielder and able to throw anywhere he wants. This is my understanding of the rule and I've seen it called a couple of times (although apparently the umpire didn't know the rule the same as I do not).

I was at the game and am biased towards Brossart. To be honest, having Zach Bezold out of the lineup did hurt Scott. Not so much in hitting because I think the freshman had a hit and possibly a sac fly. It hurt defensively although Brossart is not necessarily a speedy team, stealing bases, etc. - they are much more of a hitting team. Finally, Brossart actually broke open the game in the 7th inning when Sowder was pitching. IMO they hit Sowder harder and scored more runs then they did off of Sparks. By the way, good luck to Zach Bezold. I hope he has a speedy recovery.

I vote for 'A' balk. My interpretation of the rule is - if you throw the ball, you have to throw it to a base, otherwise it is a balk. However, the umpires seem to be having difficulty this high school season deciding exactly what is 'stepping toward the base'. Brossart has had a lot of balks on left handers stepping 45% towards first base (another balk called last night against Scott).

Don't know the boys name but it was a left hander (number 17). He pitched a pretty descent game. The last inning it was Sowder (spelling) number 3 who came in from 2nd base.

After seeing the Campbell County game last night - Brossart will start with Travis Norton and David Greis will come in relief. It should be a good game and I can't wait until this evening. Good luck to both teams.

This was a pretty wild affair with a lot of scoring and back and forth play. Jake Ollier got the start for Brossart and was relieved by Ian Hehman, Dylan Embs and Zach Fardo (who took the loss). For the Camels it was Jon Rust getting the start and Michael Teegarden in relief. Brossart's hitting leaders were 3B-Anthony Steffen 2-4 with a HR and 2B and 1B-David Greis was 2-5. For the Camels it was 3B-Ryan Steffen going 3-5 with two HR's and Jake Rebholz with a 9th inning 3 run dinger that sealed the deal. In Alexandria a pretty good night for the Steffen's combining for 5-9 with three home runs and a double. Awesome hitting display gentlemen!

I believe NewCath is in the Harrison Co. tournament this year.

At Brossart, when Varsity is playing at home, JV generally plays the same school at the other schools field. That way, JV gets almost as many games as Varsity. It works really well.

TOG - I'm with you. As a fan that watches a lot of high school baseball, I know I would much rather watch the games from 5:00 to 7:30 or 8:00 pm versus 7:00 to 9:30 or 10:00 pm. It is just too darn cold at that time of the evening in the spring (at least in NKy). I'm also with the president (?) at LexCath, if donors are giving that kind of money, spend it somewhere else where it can be more useful (technology lab, library or some other academic way).

Neither Fardo or Norton threw Monday night against NCC. However, Brossart has a district seeding game against Campbell County tonight (4/21) so I assume that one of these two (Fardo or Norton) will throw tonight. In the Brossart coaches minds, I'm not sure which game is more important, Campbell County tonight (arch rival and district foe - plus the added incentive of going against a previous assistant coach) or Beechwood tomorrow (All 'A' sectional). Tough decisions - that's why they get paid the big bucks.

Region 10 semis and finals on Saturday (April 17th) at Nicholas County. First semi has Brossart vs. Nicholas County at noon. Second semi is Calvary Christian vs. Paris at 2:00 pm. Finals on Saturday at 4:00 pm.

Travis Norton's batting avg is somewhere around .700 this year with 13 doubles and 1 home run. Right now he is three shy of Brossart's single season record for doubles (currently held by NKU player Evan McDole). Travis is a Junior. His younger brother Tanner (a Freshman) is also hitting very well, although I don't have his stats handy. Tanner is bigger \ bulkier than his older brother Travis. Tanner catches and from what I've seen this year, is one of the better catchers in the area. Brossart also has others hitting the ball well (Anthony Steffen and David Greis - both senors and Trevor Bezold a Soph). Overall, Brossart's team is hitting extremely well. Just so you know, I am biased, as you can tell from the name. Also, Brossart is in the 10th region not the 9th - this thread was started as the top hitters in the 9th, so no Brossart players qualify for that.

Voice of Reason - I guess that makes sense and since it is a judgement call by the umpire, I guess there isn't much to argue about. The only thing that bothers me is the batter was in the box (he didn't step over the plate) and took a ligitimate swing at a pitch (albeit an outside pitch). To get called out while in the batter's box swinging at a pitch just doesn't seem right. What is to stop the catcher from bumping into the batter on purpose just to get an interference call?

I have a question for anyone knowing the rules of baseball. Here is the situation. Runner on first, no outs. First pitch to the batter and the runner attempts to steal. The pitch is outside - I believe so far outside that the umpire is going to call it a ball. The batter, keeping both feet in the batters box, leans over the plate and reaches to swing at the ball. The catcher, comes up throwing and bumps into the batter (both feet are in the batter's box). Umpire calls interference and calls the batter out. As a batter, can you get called out while you are standing in the batter's box, swinging at a pitch - even if you are leaning over the plate to swing?

No - this was not an All "A" game as Brossart is in the 10th region and Holy Cross in the 9th. I was at the game and Holy Cross seemed to play well. Good pitching for sure. Not to make excuses but Brossart was 'flat'. Not their usual enthusiastic self. Maybe the freedom of spring break caught up to them - although Holy Cross may have been on spring break as well.

Brossart was winning 13-2 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning when play was suspended (at Brossart). I have no idea whether they are going to make up the game or not. I'm interested to know the rule on whether they would pick up the game where it left off (with the score 13-2) or whether they start over zero to zero?

I was at the game last night and was very pleased that Brossart won. However, I would dispute that Brossart played well. They had a lot of errors, their pitchers walked a lot of batters (I think they walked five batters in the first two innings) and there were several baserunning mistakes (twice they failed to tag from 3rd on sac flies and once a man on 2nd didn't score on a double). I'm glad they won, but Brossart can play better.

I have a solution to this problem. This is supposed to be all about the kids and yet all I keep hearing is opinions from us 'older' folks. We've had our high school days - and in my case they are long gone (but good memories). I say let the kids decide where they want their regional tournament held. When it is your districts turn to host, give each district school 10 votes (IE: 10 kids on each school's team gets to vote). Give them 4 gyms to choose from - making sure that each choice can actually handle the event. Majority wins. Regional tournament held where the KIDS want it!
