  1. How does St. X have 1700 boys and not dominate in basketball??? I Guess its a football, golf, track and soccer school!
  2. Very tough game to watch. HHS had too many unforced turnovers at the point guard position. The offense seem to be pass the ball around with no dribble penetration or look for the shot. CN should help at the point guard spot and PT will help on the boards but till they get back into BB shape the offense needs to go through Witte. I know there was talk of up tempo play but you need the players to play at that pace and if its not there you have to have a half court offense. Play the five best players and leave them in for more then a couple of minutes, the substitution pattern left alot to be desired. Mix in a timeout when the other team goes on a ten point run and when players continue to make the same mistake over and over again don't drop your head take them out. Finally, if Dixie is the top NKY team in the region they will be a quick out at Rupp.
  3. I agree the Moyer league is a start but the catholic schools do not participate and the teams are not balanced for competitiveness. Hopefully the league will begin to bear the player stream that HHS needs. Totally agree the middle school teams do not properly prepare the players for HS. The fact that only three or four players a year are making it to the varsity level makes you think that they either the HMS needs two teams at each grade level or that maybe they drop out of the MS league and develop four teams to play among themselves like the FTJFL. More kids reaching the freshman level still playing the sport is what makes the football team good but for some reason the basketball philosophy doesn't seem to be the same. The academy style of training will bring more players along but then the American way is all about the W's.
  4. I see plenty of games and I do want the team to do well, however I'm sure the Beechwood,NC,HC all have football players on the team. IMO the problem is there is nothing like FTJFL for basketball in Ft. Thomas. Teams are formed and go in different directions chasing down the w's and not teaching the fundamentals and developing more kids. I know if you don't play at a high level during the AAU season you have little chance of winning at the HS level. It has become the same in other sports where your scholarship comes from your club season and not your HS season. If this is the trend for the future then HHS basketball will always struggle because of the football first mentalitity and the lack of boys enrollment. In HS sports the coach is worth his weight in gold because he must take the fringe players and make them important pieces of the puzzle. He also has to developed a program that basketball players seek out not only in the school but in the area. In the end I wish the boys well and hope their season is successful.
  5. I can see the team has a little work to do after a 4 point loss to a St. Henry team that lost by 25 to Cov Cath. and a ten point loss to BB.
  6. IMO the MO shifted to the birds in the third quarter when the CCH db dropped a PT throw that hit him in the numbers. Then a few plays later the ball was fumbled and before two CCH players could fall on the ball, it rolled out of bounds. Highlands went on to score and the game was over.
  7. NCC scores the winning goal with under a minute left in regulation. Ryle has to be dancing in the streets. Every year CCH finds a way to lose.
  8. The fact of the matter is that the ar's duties are 95% on the offside and 5% on fouls. While most fans think it is quite easy to watch offside and the rest of the play, it is not. The pregame instructions start with you have offside at ALL TIMES.
  9. There is a pretty good soccer player already on the team and he has a very strong leg, CN.
  10. The HHS soccer program has not suffered because of football in the last few years as they have finished in the final 8 and 4 in 2 of the last three years. The common thing with soccer and football is good feeder programs. Baseball and basketball not so good and in the case of baseball the numbers are shrinking each year. I would also tell you some of HHS best soccer players are playing football.
  11. Looks like T has joined the GCL south. There schedule resembles a GCL south team even the part where they have to search the region for games . Unlike the GCL south teams though which MUST win these games to make the playoffs ,T can schedule up and not worry about making the playoffs. They need to win these games however to win there mythical national championship. Congradulations on a super schedule and good luck boys.
  12. As a coach you must get the most out of the players you have and adapt to their abilities. HHS offense seems complicated and little to no movement towards the basket. Maybe they are afraid to shoot or lack confidence since they are not given much confidence. I guess we will wait till the current freshman are JRs till we will see Highlands back near the top of the region. That is unless football becomes more important then basketball for them too. I really dont think that HHS football has the best talent at the freshman level but the players get better and become skilled enough to win state championships. If the numbers are down in the basketball program there is a reason and it isnt always because of football like most would like to argue.
  13. Heard a rumor that HMS which has three seventh grade girls that one plays freshman, one JV, and one varsity might play in the middle school tournament. I doubt the girl who plays varsity would move down this far but it would make for a interesting tournament.
  14. Just wondering when the honeymoon is over with coach Flynn? Next year looks like it will be another struggle as the JV has problems scoring and if Towles gets a D-1 scholarship he might take the BB season off. I know that it can be cyclical but I dont see things getting better.
  15. That is NKU fee for using there facilities. When Highlands played Cov Cath in soccer at NKU they also charged the 3 to park. Brossart probably knew the fee was coming since they used the soccer field for there senior night. If the all "A" schools wanted to showcase there gyms why would you put in a rule that the gym had to seat 1000 people. Think of it as a convience fee and enjoy the basketball.
  16. Highlands loses to Male by 28 w/o Stewart once again shows the lack of depth in the program and its probably going to get worse next year with only three juniors this year. Next years team probably will have one BB only player, which I dont think is essential but it would be nice to have more than one in the program.
  17. This thread was started because I see to many kids walking away from the basketball program at the high school level. Why cant a local league work for basketball like it does for football. A league that teaches the basics to all kids and then have multiple middle school teams on the boys side so when half the boys decide to play football only the numbers dont drop off at the high school level. Better yet build a basketball academy just like FTJFL and just not play middle school games.:idunno:
  18. The Catholic Grades School League in Campbell County is fabulous. Hence, NCC, BB & old St.T have had great basket ball as a result. A few years ago, I was involved in something referred to as the Ft.T recreational BB league. It was fun, but pretty weak. The school district needs to address a feeder program in the grade schools if they want to turn the situation around. There is a model to observe, if anyone has any questions. :ylsuper::ylsuper::ylsuper:
  19. I agree with the thought that a 9th region championship would be a start and obviously it is easier to win a state championship with the 6 class system. The boys and girls soccer teams have made it to the final 8 in the state, in the no class system. Also, totally agree with if this is the football team people would be saying the sky was falling. HHS basketball needs to be on the same level as the rest of tha athletic teams and I dont see it . There are numerous reasons it seems for the state of the basketball teams at HHS and the administration,AD,coaches and community need to take a hard look at the program.
  20. Good stuff and hopefully the coach can turn the program back into a program that BB players want to come to and excel. I believe the elementary school programs as well as improving the middle school program is the way to go. I get the era of the three sport star is over but 2 sports players should still be possible. It seems to me that most of the multi sport players seem to end up at NCC, maybe because it is easier for them to play the multiple sports there than at HHS.
  21. While coach Flynn is a good guy, IMO he is not the charismatic leader who walks the hallways like a Mueller or Code that could talk to the kids daily and not only get players to tryout but the fans to show up for the games. I do think if you start out with ten boys in the 6th grade and half either quit or play football only at the 9th grade then you are in trouble as a program. There has to be a way to increase the numbers at the MS level. These AAU teams that play together three or four years together and then are preordained the next 6, 7, 8th grade team hurt because those players not in the group are left to catchup and then just give up. Then the favorite AAU team players either play football only or quit playing all together and then your numbers really fall off.
  22. The basketball program is broken and needs to be fixed. The FTJFL does a great job of producing players for the football team but there is no such device for basketball. Coach Flynn is very nice guy but does he get the student body excited about playing basketball for Highlands? Moyer league might be a starting point but that is still a question mark. The MS teams do not involve as many players as possible like football, there needs to be multiple teams at the 6,7,8th levels. I'm sure enough coaches would step forward and the fort can be used for practices. When my son was in the eighth grade there are two players from that team (JR's) that now play basketball!! The program attracts players and coaches and right now the HHS basketball is not very appealing.
  23. Revenge has to come in every other sport because it wont happen on the football field. If you dont think every school who has been on the wrong side of a HHS football beat down doesnt think this way you are mistaken.
  24. The poll pretty much says it all, the birds struggle and the colonels get some revenge for their gridiron losses.
