Was only there for a couple of hours and it was the first time I have ever gone to a match. Jam packed action and great competition, 4 mats going at once. I put the rest of the pics up on facebook at this address for those who would like to see them. Kids really get after it.

Wrestling is a crazy sport. It's a completely different type of dedication than any other sport IMO.

 

I haven't followed it much since 1981. If I remember correctly then the "heavy" division was 220 or 215. Now I see there is a 285.

 

Congrats to Mike Bankemper and the Camels.

Mudruds, the problem is no one covers wrestling. Hard to find any info on wrestling. Even on this board it gets almost no attention. I read a blip in the paper and decided to check it out. Seemed to have a nice crowd in attendance but very little press attention all season.

There's not a big base of fans for high school wrestling. Add in cuts to staff and it's easy to see why it's not getting much coverage.

I think it is cool that Boone County High School hosted the Regionals because they dropped their wrestling program for a long time.

I didn't realize until a month ago they had brought it back. Conner and Boone used to really get after it on the mat.

Very much an individual sport but wraps into team competition. These young men were in great shape and even in losses showed some of the best sportmanship I have seen in high school sporting events. No idea how the scoring worked but almost no protests from coaches. Great to see a sport where coaches and fans don't ride the refs.

Stick around paNDA. We were very fortuate to have awesome reffing at the Region 6 tournament this weekend. Last year at the regional tournament it was a completely different story. There was a ref out of W. Virginia (if memory serves) handle-bar mustache, kind of piratey looking (anyone remember) who was one of the worse refs I've ever but unfortunate enough to see ref. Heard later from a coach that this gentleman would not be back reffing in Ky anyway soon.

 

The fans were in good form also. I don't know if everyone was anticipating sparks from a certain corner of the gym, but it didn't happen. In fact, all the parents with 'reputations' seemed to be on a leash this weekend. Coach Sherlock and his Boone faithful ran an awesome tournament and should be commended. (Although Coach Sherlock may have been arrested by the Fashion Police for the tie he had on Saturday night.)

 

The only downside of the night was the knee injury to SK 160 Jacob Clark. Hopefully it was nothing serious and he'll be on the mat this weekend.

I have to agree with your comment about Andy's tie, but it did put some humor into the day. This was my first time going. Most of the time I had other commitments and I have to say it was very fun to watch. It also helped my team won the region as well. Regarding the sparks from the parents you are talking about, I think he was there to support his kids and not speaking for the person, but I would have to say the reputation of Coach Bankemper has earned some respect from said parent. I just people would just leave it alone. He has not made a butt of himself since the transfer and the kids are fantastic. If anyone watched them with the other wrestlers they all get along and it is a cohesive team.

 

I also have to agree with you, Boone Co. did a fantastic job of hosting and regarding Jacob Clark, I am not sure he will be on the mat this weekend. From what I heard, it was a dislocated kneecap.

 

Good luck to Campbell County at State. I can't wait to go and watch. I just wish I was able to go when it was at Frankfort (heard they did a fantastic job hosting).

Wrestling - "the other winter sport". The one I lettered in back in the day. Six feet tall and 138. Forty pounds ago and forty years ago.
