What has happened to South Laurel

Featured Replies

The basketball program at South Laurel is a joke compared to what it has been for the past 20 years. I blame the Principal and Athletic Director for not going out and getting a good coach. And stop blaming the loses on injuries. Every team deals with adversity with players getting hurt. South Laurel has more talent than most and should not have a 5-15 record. You should have kept Steve Wright around or made it a top priority to get a good coach.

Did Wright leave on his own terms or did he see a brighter future ahead at PSW?

South laurel has plenty of talent and on this team. Coach wright coached at South for 19 or 20 years and in this day and time that is a long time in one program. I believe he would have stayed and I bet a lot of people do to.

Can't help but wonder if the administration wanted to re-establish control of the program. Tough to call the shots when a state championship-winning coach has other ideas. There may have been concern he had gotten too powerful?

The basketball program was in good shape when Steve Wright was there and the administration should have realized that. I would think that they realize it now but to late. They need to make it a top priority to bring in a established head coach when this season is over. Roscoe is at North Laurel.

Is he helping Brad as an assistant? Can't help but think SL's demise is equal parts Steve leaving and Roscoe leaving.

Wasn't there some concerns with the handling of some incoming players?

? What was SL's record last year? If I remember correctly, they were not very good last year either. I was also told by a few different people that the talent isn't there as some think, One good player, possibly one other decent one?

Further evidence of the absence of Roscoe.

The record at 5-15 doesnt look good, but if you dont think for one minute that losing players like Sanders, the point guard and leader of this team....Slavey, the second leading scorer at 15ppg, and Schaser, the leading rebounder, doesn't hurt then you have no clue. There's not one team in southeatern or eastern ky that can take that kind of hit and still keep on winning . Then add on to this that South Laurel is playing a schedule with 7 teams at one time or another that has been ranked in the top 15 of the state and only one of those at home, not to mention playing a 30game schedule with 20 of those game away. Just plain and simple, this season has been the perfect recipe for a 5-15 record right now, but with a roster of 1 senior and what should be a more favorable home schedule next season and a great young coach in Jeff Davis, the future is still good............oh by the way......we have no canadians on our roster!!

Are these players out for the season or will they return this year?

Couple more things to add.....In the 15 losses, South has actually been tied or had the lead in the 4th qtr of 11 of these games, so they are actually not that far away. They have yet to play one game this season with the full team, Jeffrey Hale didn't play his first minute until the Wayne Co. tournament and Sanders was already out with his injury. Once this team gets healthy, and that could be by the end of this month, they have the ability to make a run in the 13th region this year.

Slavey will get released to return this Thursday, Schaser should be back this week, and Sanders is still questionable on his return, but he is hoping to return by the 24th, although it may be a week longer than that.

Thanks for the info. I know that having players out because of injuries can make a HUGE difference. Hope all these players can return full strength soon.
