Anybody that isn't grateful to have Jeff as a coach needs to take a good, long look in the mirror. That guy can coach. Once the talent gets healthy, the wins will follow.

 

The guys coached some of the best talent the state's seen in recent years, via AAU, and those guys love him.

Neerfan....both of your comments are correct - he left on his own terms and did see a brighter future ahead at PSW. After being at SL for 20 (or whatever) years, it was time for a change for both he and the administration. The school board members themselves have changed over the years and is now made up of members primarly from the North, who support a different program and Wright could see this. He's probably close to retirement and if the truth were to be known, he just didn't want to put up with any more bull coming from the central office. Wouldn't it be ironic if Wright were to become the leader of this administration some day!!

 

After reading all of the comments, everyone knows that on any given night, any team can be beaten regardless of the talent or coach, or even assistant coach. I've been around all of the coaches (Davis, Wright, Sizemore, and Denny) for many years and for anyone to say that these guys are bad coaches....you're just wrong. These guys contribute so much time and effort in teaching players how to play the game but, they can't play the game for them.

 

Davis, although he's in his first year as head coach, he'll do a great job at South. I'm sure the players are still trying to buy into his system and there are several injuries that have hurt the lineup but after all is said and done, he'll have this program performing to its potential within two years. Sizemore & Denny, a complimentary duo that will be a regional contender. Wright at SWP - it is what it is - great coach, who has earned his state championship ring. It's my understanding that kids want to play for him and that's why he's had so much success in his career.

That Deming team was one of the best in school history. You are saying Davis was a good hire based on what. I heard the last two or three years he has applied for almost every head coaching position that has came open and nobody hired him. I also heard that South Laurel offered the job to two other candidates before Davis took it and neither of them had head coaching experience. He has only won 5 games. The administration should have went after a big name coach based of the tradition at South Laurel. They did not do that and look at what has happened. Just blame the administration. You can only hope that they will fix it when the season is over.

I was told SL called Coach Davis not the other way around and he had not even spoke to anyone about SL until late summer.

If I may use a quote from a former President " I want to make one thing perfectly clear" The parents at South Laurel supports Coach Davis, so please stop implying that the parents at south laurel are unrealistic and want Coach Davis fired. The prarents at south laurel like and back Coach Davis 100% and are soooooo happy for the change. Coach Davis, has been welcomed by parents and made to feel a part of the South Laurel family. The south Laurel parents are working hard in the Basketball program with Coach Davis, to make sure he has no worries outside of coaching. Coach Davis has also gotten support from former players parents to help make sure he's had a good transitution at South Laurel.

The South Laurel parents have been made out to be bad parents and there is nothing farther from the truth! Coach Davis has embraced the parents and welcomed their help.

Great guy, Great coach. When all players are back and healthy you will see a different team.

The basketball program at South Laurel is a joke compared to what it has been for the past 20 years. I blame the Principal and Athletic Director for not going out and getting a good coach. And stop blaming the loses on injuries. Every team deals with adversity with players getting hurt. South Laurel has more talent than most and should not have a 5-15 record. You should have kept Steve Wright around or made it a top priority to get a good coach.

Roscoe is one of the few head coaches to take two different teams to the state tournament--Breathitt County and Danville. We tried to hire him as our head coach back in 2003, and he came in to talk to us about it, but in the end he chose to stay as an assistant at SL.

Yeah, I've heard a couple of his songs. Watching him sing at the pep rally after SL won state was a hoot, to say the least. Roscoe is one of the most interesting characters in Ky. sports history, to say the least.
