Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear to 'aggressively' push gambling

Thoughts...

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentucky's governor expects a proposal to be filed in a matter of days in the state legislature to legalize casino-style gambling.

"We're going to go very aggressively after a constitutional amendment on expanded gaming," Democrat Steve Beshear told reporters in his Capitol office on Wednesday. "... And I'm hopeful that there will be enough votes in the Senate and the House this time to reach agreement on some language that we can put on the ballot and let the people vote on it."

They really need to get this on a ballot and let the people speak. Ridiculous.

This is a tough one for me. I don't gamble, don't like it and think it is nothing but a waste of money. I think having it readily available to people is a bad thing because people will succomb to temptation. I also think it preys on many who can not afford to waste money. There is not one thing productive or positive to society in gambling.

However, it is everywhere. It is so readily available that all those issues I listed above are moot. In fact, it is a drain on our commonwealth to not have it. Our horse industry is going to continue to lose. Our citizens are going to other neighbor states and those states benefit from their wasteful behavior. We have no choice but to allow our state to join all our neighbors. I applaud Kentucky for holding out as long as they have but sometimes it becomes fruitless to fight the tide.

Put it on the ballot and let the people decide.

You know what else preys on people who can't afford things? Cigarettes. Alcohol. Horse track. Cell phones.

As a state we're either for gambling or we're against it. We can't be sorta for it as in yes to horses but no to gaming.

Not so fast my friend! You can get free cell phones from the government now :p. Sorry just had to say it.

I agree, put it on the ballot and let the people speak. I can't wait for some Kentucky Casinos. There is no reason Kentucky should be losing these jobs and tax money to Indiana, Ohio, and other states.

I've always been for it, and now, after having worked a few months at a resort with a casino and knowing what I know....PLEASE let us get casino style gambling in Kentucky. It's absurd the amount of revenue IN and surrounding states are raking in from Kentuckians. The numbers are STAGGERING!

Very true, although I'm assuming us NKY folk will frequent the Cincy casino more than any that they put up in Kentucky.

Not if they put one of the KY side of the river and expand to make it part of the levy. Quick walk from the bars to the casino.

If they put one in at Turfway, NKY people will travel there over going downtown.

For the record, I would have no desire to go to a casino to gamble. That's based on nothing more than I do not enjoy it nor do I like wasting money plus as former BGPer HSSRB used to say about me "I'm tighter than skin on a hot dog."

^ Yeah. I don't really care. I won't go, but I also don't see any need to stand in the way of allowing expanded gambling in Kentucky.

Agreed.

The Erlanger/Florence area, I agree. Those in Campbell County would frequent the downtown one in that case.
