I read all of them and loved them and I'm what would generally be considered a crotchety old man. The thing about the books is that as the characters age so does the level of the books. Book 1 was written so that someone the same age as Harry (11) could read it. Book 7 would be a little intense for an 11 year old but not an 18 year old as Harry was supposed to be at the end of the series. I ordered the last 3 books from Amazon and they were delivered on the day they came out. I started reading each one when they arrived in the mail and finished them in less then 24 hours each.

I have read all but the last one. I did so mainly so I could have discussions with my son who was reading them at the time. Same reason I read all the Twilight books along with my daughter.

I re-read the series everytime a new movie or book came out. Absolutely love them. The first few books I've probably read at least 10 times.

At 52 I fall into the crotchety old man category also and I have read them all as well as watched all the movies

I've read them all and have really enjoyed each of them. I kind of aged alongside the main characters, so as All Tell pointed out, the reading level kept up with my abilities as a reader. It also allowed me to enjoy them all equally, whereas now if I were to read the first book it would be much less enjoyable than the last.

Never read them, but watched the movies.

 

I still hold to the old Han Solo perspective on that sort of thing, "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side kid."

 

Never been a big fan of anything related to magic, I think that is why I like the Martin books so much. Any magic is wholly subdued.

Not bad, nothing like Martin or Tolkein in the fantasy realm. Even the later ones which are rather large read pretty quickly.

I feel bad for people who never gave them a chance. I was one of those people who said that I would never like it, and then I read them all in a couple month span about a year or 2 ago. Give it a chance because you can read the first book in a few hours no problem. The series really starts getting good at the 3rd book though. I would say books/movies 1 and 2 are the worst. To the people who at least gave it a chance, I applaud you and you will hear no complaints for me since you tried it.

Read them all. They were pretty good. I agree with BleedBlue12's sentiment above; going back and reading them again before the 7th came out, I recall being very uninterested by the first three as I went through them. The stories definitely evolved and did so in a good way. The second half of the series is much more compelling to an older reader than the first half.

Totally agree. If the story hadn't evolved I wouldn't be such a big fan. Except for reading them all before a new movie or book came out I rarely revisit anything before Prisoner of Azkaban.

Not for a single day in my adult life have I ever pretended to be anything else... and it's "re-reading" LotR... much more impressive when it comes to tallying nerd cred.
