Kevin Durant.

 

Nike has already made a good start with their latest commercial. I remember seeing something on the web about KD's rides and he was showing that van and talking about how he loved it. I'm assuming it's the same van that is in the commercial. Durant is a good down to earth dude who play's in a smaller market. He is not a hero, he is not a villain, he is perfectly in between. Lebron and Kobe in the past has been it because of star power, but after most of the free basketball world turned against Lebron and his move to Miami and more notably "the decision", it has caused a lot of people to be turned off by Lebron. Kobe has rubbed people the wrong way a few times over the years and after coming off back to backs the Lakers look to be on the way down unless Superman (Dwight Howard) can swoop in to save them. If it had to be one right now it has to be a young and priming Kevin Durant.

 

 

With that said in order for the NBA to continue it's success coming off last seasons anticipated post season it will need to rely on multiple star players to be the face of the league. Not just one, not just a couple, but many. That's the way it's always been and that's the way it needs to continue to be. The NBA is more about rivalries and dynasty's than anything else, Magic/Bird, Kobe/Lebron, etc. Celtics dynasty, Showtime Lakers, 90's Bulls, Kobe's Lakers, etc. For the NBA to keep progressive with marketing they need to keep forging ahead with new young players and new blossoming rivalries all the while keep sight of their great veteran superstars as well. The NBA is about more than any one player, it is about more than any two players. The NBA as a whole though is a beautiful thing that showcases the worlds best in their sport.

No one thinks Blake Griffin? He has the highlight reel plays. Everyone is focused on the dunk and he is the man.

Kevin Durant. He's the goody two shoes, eats, sleeps, breathes basketball that scores a lot(so kids love him) and I believe we absolutely have no worries at all about him giving the NBA a bad name.

 

He's everything I don't like in a player. He's the perfect face of the NBA. He's the Tim Tebow of the NBA in a metaphorical sense. Not the actual production on the court/field sense.

He'd work also but I think Durant delivers a perfect interview every time and Durant's team is way better also. Do we really want a Clipper as the face of the NBA?

The only reason I didn't say Kobe is because of the alleged rape case. Some people actually believe he did it. We don't want a dude who has had the slightest controversy so Kobe won't work.

 

I didn't say LeBron because he still tweets his own tweets and who knows what he will say one day. Durant has never said anything stupid on twitter.

 

DWade would be a good one also. Still young enough and still popular enough. He was also once voted one of the 50 sexiest men by People magazine a few years back(my wife loves him.....yeah....not a Dwade fan.....) so he has universal appeal also.

Let's be real--if you are trying to pick one player to be the face to sell to the "average person"--shouldn't the face be white?

 

Kind of.....there is always a black guy like Kevin Durant that is universally accepted. As long as the face isn't 'street'(a la Allen Iverson) I don't think people would be too upset but you bring up a good and fair point.

Completely agree. The only negative on Durant is that he's kind of shy. It'd be good to have a guy that could "turn on" when the cameras and microphones are in front of him.

I understand where you're coming from, but I actually view that as a plus for Durant.

The NBA has already chose and made the right pick. If you want to sell the game, LeBron James is the only choice. Last year was a great year for the NBA compared to where they have been. Durant is a nice guy but boring. Rose is a possibility, but PGs other than Magic just don't sell. DHoward just doesn't have the truly great Center feel to him, will he ever get a title? Griffin is possible, but he needs to do something edgy.

 

LeBron gets no nice guy points, but he sells like no other in the league. He's made Kobe a good guy. He can be the villain to Durant. I agree somewhat...the problem is LeBron does embrace that villain role and the face of the NBA has never been a villain. Jerry West, Dr. J, Magic, Bird, MJ, Shaq.....none of them have ever been villains. Once Shaq began running his mouth too much they shifted to Tim Duncan..... the NBA will ride the LeBron train and they do...just not as the face of the NBA. People either love or hate LeBron. The face of the NBA cannot be hated and Kevin Durant hasn't given anyone a logical reason to hate him. I am admitting my hatred for Durant is illogical. And I don't care..
