What disappoints me is the lack of parental oversight on Facebook.

I struggle a bit with this. I know much more about what goes on FB on my kids' walls than they realize but I also refuse to jump in every time a bad word is expressed. If I see something that has the potential to cause problems down the road I casually mention that they need to be careful.

The above pejorative would not cause me to say anything specific to my child. I may not like it and I may wish he would express himself differently but I wouldn't call him on the carpet.

So if your 14/15 year old son posted that on Facebook you would do what???

And from there the thread on FB has taken on a whole new life with racial slurs in it.

^ I'm not shocked. To simply put it. The age off 13-17 and sometimes older, they just don't understand any type of consequences that could come of this now or in the future. Unless a parent steps in I don't see any way they will stop. This is the way some talk to their friends. They see FB as an online "club" with all their friends.

Two different issues here.

Bad words/curse words. I am going to let him know that he needs to be careful but I'm not punishing him.

ANY comments regarding race/sex/drinking/drugs I'm IMMEDIATELY on that and coming down with some authority. That's a much different issue than an FU comment.

Would this be different if it was said aloud as opposed to on Facebook?

Who is it said in front of? If it was just in front of me and not TO ME then we just have a calm conversation. If it's in front of grandma/mom/neighbors then we've got ourselves an issue.

My point is that I subscribe to the "kids will be kids" thinking to an extent. Cursing just doesn't get me wound up. Heck, they learned it from me.

I fully realize my style isn't for everyone. It's worked for me though.

Let's hope this trend goes away as quickly as planking did.

It's as old as the hills. I don't see it going away. It's just more visible now.

This trend is as old as competitive sports.

I was just curious. I was raised quite similar, though I think an F bomb in front of my Mom would have earned me the backside of her hand, no matter the context/setting. While there was no Facebook, I think there were times she saw conversations on ICQ/AOL IM/MSN Messenger where I used the language and we just had a talk.

I have four siblings that are 10+ years younger than me and thus a lot of the social media monitoring has fell on my lap. I tend to go the Clyde route when these situations arise. Three of the four siblings have Facebook and by their Mother's rule each of them had to add me as their first friend if they wanted a profile.

I will say this: I am very glad facebook didn't exist when I was in high school. There are plenty of thoughts in the minds of the 15-18 year old mind that are best left unshared with the world, let alone stored there.

A cuss word is one thing but don't you think it takes on added consequences a child says it about his rival school? To me, this is how many worse things get started. I am sure there are some kids from Ryle thinking we will show him for talking like that and before you know it you could have a full blown riot on your hands.

So to be clear, a cuss word would have me telling my son/daughter no more, a cuss word in this context would have me handing out a heavy penalty.
