This may add some perspective to Mr. Towles accomplishments thus far:

 

Starter win streak - 19 games

Highlands has broke the state records for both points in a season and touchdowns in a season, records that were previously held by the 1998 Highlands squad. Highlands has scored a total of 807 points and 115 touchdowns this year (the previous records were 801 points and 113 touchdowns).

 

Based on High School, very impressive. Can't wait for next level.

Prior to 1990 you could count the number of qbs who had a 2000 yard season on one hand and have fingers left over. There were some real good qbs in the day that never got the opportunity to throw much. If you look back at Highlands coaching you find Homer Rice, inventor of option football, Owen Hauck, amd Mike Murphy. For those guys 10 passes in a season was to many.

Times have changed.

 

Reading Murph's name reminded me of a little diddy we used to sing about Murph (sung to the tune of Old Mac Donald had a farm): Old Mike Murphy had a team; buck, guts and o'lead; with a buck, guts here; and a buck, guts there; here a buck; there a guts; every where an o'lead; old Mike Murphy had a team; buck, guts and o'lead.

 

Murphy was one heck of a football coach and is an exceptionally fine person, but I always that it was interesting how the QB that held passing records at UC (if I remember correctly, Murph's records were broken by some fellow named Greg Cook) could call running plays so often as a high school football coach (buck, guts and o'lead were three of his favorite running plays). I think Owen must have been a bad influence on him.

Okay, how much did Coach pay you to type that?

Patrick is the best I have seen, due largely because of what's between his ears. Great upbringing and support from his family and community. One player being left off these lists is Rob Whitten who played at Beechwood in the '80's. Rob was first team all state his senior year ('87) and wound up going to BYU. He left there and finished up at East Carolina. Not sure where he ranks, but should definitely be in the discussion. 6'2" and 210+ pounds back then, which was huge for that era.
