October 10, 201114 yr What does it say? I'm not an insider. I would most likely be on board with this move. He is a huge part of this team but he probably won't be here after his contract is up and the Reds can't afford to pay him fair market value.

Less risk of a meltdown. Trading Votto when we have his rights for the next 2 years makes even less sense than trading Hamilton. Maybe we can get Milt Pappas for him.

So you agree that Votto is more valuable but say it makes less sense to trade him than it did Hamilton? Votto will be with the Reds this year unless they are completely overwhelmed with an offer during the offseason. If the Reds fall out of contention early in the season then I look for them to dangle him on the market to see what they'll get in return. I say they trade him in 2013 but that's just me.

Basically that trading Votto now would net more return than waiting, they cited Prince Fielder as an example of how waiting watered down the market. The discussed getting a front line starter possibly. Also discussed dealing Alonzo or Bruce, but Votto being the one that obviously brings back the most return.

There was also this blurb: "Getting a first baseman back isn't absolutely necessary, since Yonder Alonso may be ready to step in and be adequate. Doesn't sound like the ESPN guys are all that sold on Alonso, either.

And the Hamilton-Volquez deal was good for the Reds until Volquez got hurt. That's part of the risk involved in any trade, just as the Rangers had some risk on Hamilton's part. Let's be honest, guys. Hamilton is a great story and all, but he's not a superstar-caliber player. The guy has spent his entire MLB career in two great hitters' parks, and his stats reflect that. Doesn't sound like the ESPN guys are all that sold on Alonso, either. Or they are stupid, obviously the Reds don't want a 1B in return. They wouldn't be thinking about this yet if it wasn't for Alonso.
