Here's what I was told happened...OSU was able to get 5-star stud Marcus Smart, but they had to do a "package" deal in order to get his commitment. The other half of the so-called packaged was Smart's 3-star high school teammate Phil Forte. Forte was the 4th commitment in the class and there are only 3 scholarships...Wing is currently the odd man out.

I think it could be considered different, if I'm understanding this right. The kid's primary dream has been playing basketball at a major, D-1 college. He commits to play football at Marshall & then Ford comes along offering to fulfill his dream, so he pursues it.

With who? Marshall? I think the shame of it all is that schools are filling out rosters. Miss on one kid you have to find another. I hope his dream comes true, and if it takes a year to make it happen, I hope he has the patience to see it come to fruition. I think I'd trust Ford about as close as he could come to a windmill dunk.

You make very good points, but I just said the kid deserves more leeway (meaning, in comparison with Ford). I did not say he is without fault.

 

But he is, after all, a kid who has had a lifelong dream of playing major D-1 ball. Did he make a mistake in committing to early? Perhaps so. Could he have communicated his ultimate goal to Marshall? I suppose.
