4 Onside Kicks To Start the Game

Do you get points for playing defense?

Good point.

Like the old saying goes sometimes, a teams best defense can be their offense. When you have the ball, they don't. No ball, no score (well, not always, but you get what I'm saying).

I dont see how it shows a sign of weakness, maybe it shows the kids he has enough confidence in them to do anything, on fourth down at any quarter and your coach doesnt even hesitate to go for it, that confidence will transfer to the players, and the onsides everytime, he is basically saying; if we get the ball we are going to smack you in the mouth and score until you stop us. and if you get the ball, no matter where on the field, we are going to take it from you. No fear, puts fear into the other team. this coach is like a mad genious of football haha

but then again, just my opinion

Yeah you sure do. Turnovers for scores, punt returns, field position. Maybe I'm crazy, but I enjoy going on defense. Everyone wants to outscore the opponent and control the possession of the football, but there I don't see how anything could be more satisfying than going out, hitting a team in the mouth and shutting them down. And I will never support an onside kick up two scores.

PR is special team:ohbrother: lol but get your point, but also he is winning with his stradegy and he doesnt get paid to do it the conventional way, he gets pad to win, and #3 in Arkansas sounds like he is winning

....and what is your logic for the 14 point limit?

I read it when it came out. He simply plays the percentages. It has worked for him, so more power to him. It really makes sense in a lot of the situations. I am surprised more don't try it. I guess the shear "against the grain" concepts takes real guts. His kids love it, they win a lot, good for them.

If I'm on the other sideline, I'd tell my team that the other team is scared of them. I'd tell them that so what if they just got an on-side kick. We're going to stop them, and then we're going to kick deep. And then we're going to stop them, get the ball back and score. And go from there. I'd use the on-side kick as motivation for my kids. Don't get me wrong, if I were a head coach I'd prefer to get the ball off a short kick though. I'm young and I love creativity in football (love Malzahn, CKelly, Petersen), but I hate this non-traditional, gimmick garbage.

He is playing %s.

I agree with Clyde & I remember the SI article... All abt percentages...

By onside kicking, getting it on the 50, going on a 14 play drive from there to score, eating up every second of the play clock before you snap it each time and taking 7 minutes off the clock by doing so each time and doing it all again. Knowing, that there is nothing the guys across the field from you can do about it.

I understand your points about playing hard nosed, stingy defense. A lot of people probably turned the channel from the LSU/MS St game tonight, but I watched every play bc it was as good of a defensive game as one could want, but I'm fan of eating up the clock having the ball, then scoring and absolutely making the guys across the field feel completely helpless.

It is a defensive special team in my book. You only get to return punts after good defense.

I'd rather kick-off and get a 29 point lead the old fashioned way. But if of the two options you provided, I'd rather line up and play all 3 facets of the game, so I would kick-off yes. To be honest, getting 4 on-sides kicks to start the game would feel like cheating to me, even though the opponent has every chance in the world to recover the ball or two play defense.

At one score I think that momentum is still up for grabs. If a team is up by one score, by all means try and steal some momentum. At two scores, line up and play some defense.

If you are down 21 or 28-0 and it's almost halftime and you havent ran a play yet, do you really think they they would believe the whole "the other team is scared" thing? I think they'd be letting that go in one ear and out the other, and all the while saying to themselves, "maybe they are, but their kickoff team is obviously better than our return team, and this so called scaird team is dog kicking us right now."

Good stuff, though. We can all agree to disagree. I could see where it would be cowardly to do this is your team was far more superior than your opponent, but if I'm the underdog or playing a team that I'm even with, yet I have an upper hand with my kickoff team being able to get onside kicks over your return team; well, that is genius and great coaching IMO.

How did that "we're going to stop them, get the ball back, and score" thing work out?

Not very well for the opposition. But, you'll never convince me that onside kicking everytime is real football. That is something I'd expect in another country or something. That is like Euro style basketball compared to American IMO. Its sad to me that the #3 team in a state would feel they needed to do that to win. For an average team I could see it, but if Trinity, Highlands, Beechwood were doing it here people would throw a fit and you know it Clyde.

As a defense first guy, I will never see that type of football as something I'd want to play. More power to that coach and anyone else that plays like that.

So if you are coaching basketball do you not press? Do you sit back in the traditional halfcourt D? Do you tell your defender to not steal it at midcourt from the PG?

The object is to score. You get the ball any legal way you can ESPECIALLY in the first half.
