4 Onside Kicks To Start the Game

Featured Replies

If you are down 21 or 28-0 and it's almost halftime and you havent ran a play yet, do you really think they they would believe the whole "the other team is scared" thing? I think they'd be letting that go in one ear and out the other, and all the while saying to themselves, "maybe they are, but their kickoff team is obviously better than our return team, and this so called scaird team is dog kicking us right now."

Good stuff, though. We can all agree to disagree. I could see where it would be cowardly to do this is your team was far more superior than your opponent, but if I'm the underdog or playing a team that I'm even with, yet I have an upper hand with my kickoff team being able to get onside kicks over your return team; well, that is genius and great coaching IMO.

If you're down 28-0, you haven't played well enough to win the game anyway. After they get to 21, I would just be challenging my guys to man up, take it one play at a time, and see where the score is at the end of the game.

What if you haven't had the ball?

So if you are coaching basketball do you not press? Do you sit back in the traditional halfcourt D? Do you tell your defender to not steal it at midcourt from the PG?

The object is to score. You get the ball any legal way you can ESPECIALLY in the first half.

Pressing in basketball and onside kicking in football are not even remotely the same thing. Not even close. Pressing is defense, case closed. You're better than that one Clyde :D.

I'm a defensive first guy, too, but I dont know a coach in his right mind that thinks to himself while his team has the ball, "Dang, I wish we'd give the ball to the other guys."

There's been a whole lot of state championships won in this state throughout history that have used the eating up the clock and scoring mentality.

You've played little-to-no defense. Not well enough to win.

Are you not technically on defense after the ball is kicked?

No one in their right mind thinks like that. But if given the choice of kicking off deep, stopping a team & forcing a punt and getting great field position, I'll take that everytime. Not only do you get the ball back in good field position, but you also take care of your eating up the clock mentality. Not to mention physically wearing out your opponent.

One team is being pressured by the other team defensively. The kicking team is on defense, correct? The defense is saying "we think we can get the ball and if we do not there's a high chance you'll score."

Exactly the same philosophy yet you're down on one but OK with the other?

You know who wasn't worn out to start this game? The other team's offense.

On an onside kick? Maybe technically, but not really. After 10 yards its a change of possession play. Its a free ball, the playside guys are aggresively going for the football. Is that really being on defense?

Yes. All defenses are going for the ball.

True, but you an I both know that dealing with 14-17 year old kids, things snowball.

I saw a team last year go down 24-0 and the scoreless team had yet to run a play. The team with 24, instead of recovering onside kicks, they were recovering deep pooch kicks all over the field.

Its not the same Clyde. In a press, the offense has the ball and can control who they pass to. On an onside kick, the defense controls the ball and technically the offense could never touch it. Can the return team call a time out when the play has started? Does a press prevent the oppostion from taking the ball out of bounds?

Cats, if you want to argue that the strategy is flawed because it hurts a team's chance to win then go ahead. That's a great debate.

However, arguing over "style" doesn't do it for me since scoring more than the other team is the ultimate goal.

Seemed to work out well for South Florida and Michigan vs. Notre Dame (the whole agrressively going after the ball thing).
