4 Onside Kicks To Start the Game

Featured Replies

Yes. All defenses are going for the ball.

What I'm saying is that in that situation no one is really on offense. At 10 yards everyone is in the same position, its a free, live ball & no one has possession. There's no offense & no defense for those few seconds.

Its not the same Clyde. In a press, the offense has the ball and can control who they pass to. On an onside kick, the defense controls the ball and technically the offense could never touch it. Can the return team call a time out when the play has started? Does a press prevent the oppostion from taking the ball out of bounds?

Your argument is a style argument. Some coaches/fans do not like teams that press because it appears they are trying to take advantage of the other team and they're "scared" to play halfcourt traditional D. That's what you're arguing for in football. It's the same.

Cats, if you want to argue that the strategy is flawed because it hurts a team's chance to win then go ahead. That's a great debate.

However, arguing over "style" doesn't do it for me since scoring more than the other team is the ultimate goal.

Clyde, you and I have disagreed a couple tims in other threads, but you got it all correct with this one.

I don't see how it would hurt a teams chances.

But style is a huge thing for me. I would hate to win like that. I'm sorry I like all 3 facets of the game. Being up 29-0 after four straight onside kicks, I wouldn't feel that great about it. I know everyone is different, but I think that is cheating the game. I'd rather lose the right way than cheat the game & win. I'm the most competitive guy in the world, but I wouldn't want to win like that.

So, if I'm reading you correctly, I was wrong in the other threads?:D

So, guy applying for his next head coaching job, tell us why you are no longer at your previous gig?

Well, I'm a 3-facet guy but I couldn't get my other 2 facets on the field.

"Cheat the game?"

Come on.

Cats,

Would you fault a golfer who could drive it 325-340 on average for going at the green on a short course, when his oppenents are maybe hitting it 250-275 on average? Or would you fault him for taking advantage of his strengths over his oppenents and expect him to go 6 iron then 9 iron on every hole to keep it "fair"

Here's the thing, the coaches I've been under stress Special Teams so I'd hope we could get some of those onside kicks. We'd only be practicing special teams about 20-25 minutes per day minimum.

Would Cats frown upon the old Loyola Marymount teams who won games 130 - 115 by jacking up 3s every 8 seconds?

You do what you think gives your team the best chance to win WITHIN the rules.

To me that is totally different. Obviously we disagree on the subject. If you're a HC & I'm ever a HC, maybe we'll play and you can on-side kick until the scoreboard blows up.

Not at all. I'm a fast paced kind of guy in anything. If LM was getting out of the way on defense so they could get the ball back I'd have a problem.

Sports evolve. My guess is you had been this age when the West Coast offense started you would have been saying "it's cheating the game when you don't run it all the time." "I'd rather lose running all the time or throwing the deep pass instead of winning by taking advantage of what the defense gives you."

Your argument just doesn't pass the logic test for me.

So, if I'm reading you correctly, I was wrong in the other threads?:D

haha. Let's just say we were both argumentatively challenged trying to prove our points to the other, fair? :)

Essentially they were enticing you to get into their game and jack up shots quickly so they could get the ball back. It worked for them. They didn't play traditional D. They simply wore you out by their offensive pace.
