Hopkinsville & bowl games at the Stadium of Champions

Featured Replies

1999 & 2000 were the last and only years for the Stadium of Champions in Hopkinsville hosted bowl games. But that could be changing.

Hopkinsville is in talks with Male, North Hardin, & Montgomery Bell Academy (MBA--Tennessee) about participating in a bowl game. If for some reason one of the schools mentioned above can't play then there is another out of state team that has contacted Hopkinsville about an invitation to the event.

Hopkinsville originally asked crosstown rival Christian Co. about getting together and putting on the event but to no suprise Christian Co. said no and wants no part of a bowl at the SOC for some reason.

That would be a heck of a lineup.

Why wouldn't Christian County want to be a part of that?

Mike Whitaker has never wanted to do a bowl together. A few years back there was talk but he said no and made it clear. Thought with Lovelace and Faulk joining his staff last year the 2 schools could come together on that and do a bowl game but that won't be happening.

Man, I would think that the attendance for that bowl game would rival some of the Louisville games, ;)

Awesome line up..... our friends from MBA would be a very worthy opponent!

I haven't heard anything definitive down here in Nashville, but I do know MBA needs one opponent for 2006 (probably for its opener).

MBA does have a history with one of the schools - Hopkinsville. The two schools played in 1914 and 1915, and 1948 and 1949:

MBA Scores from 1899-1939

MBA Scores from 1940-1969

Please post if any new developments occur on this front. I'll do the same from Nashville.

MBA has said they want to be apart of the bowl event. But that they might need to do some adjusting to their schedule. Hoptown, Male, NH, and MBA have reached the verbal agreements but NO contracts have been signed.

It is also unsure who would play who. I will say Hoptown will play either Male or MBA unless those 2 want to play each other leaving Hopkinsville to play North Hardin.

If Hoptown keeps Male on the schedule, then those two can just switch opponents the second year.

That's been tossed in as a scenario. The talk is a Hoptown VS MBA game IF the kinks can get straight for everybody.

Male hasn't had any luck with teams from Hardin Co the past two years. ;)

Beechwood has indiciated that they might be interested playing. Would the fan base of Beechwood make the trip this far down south?

The Stadium of Champions is a wonderful facility worthy of hosting a bowl game. What a wonderful bermuda playing surface!

MBA is out of the loop. Their schedule couldn't get reworked to fit them into the event. As of now Hoptown, Male, and North Hardin have all given the verbal agreements. A 4th team is still being looked for. If a 4th team does not appear then Hopkinsville will play Male in week 2 at the Stadium of Champions. Mempis Ridgeway is wanting to play but they already have an opponent for week 2.

Memphis Ridgeway wants to play Hopkinsville on Hoptown's 4th game of the year. Hoptown still needs an opponent for that week. Ridgeway has said they would travel to Hoptown to play. Ridgeway would need to redo their schedule a bit and swap weeks with another opponent. Hoptown is also in discussion with a team from Missouri about playing in week 4.

Hoptown's schedule could POSSIBLY look like this:

1) Alcoa (Tn.) (Integra Bowl--Cadiz) defending back to back state champs and a preseason top 3 team in their class. Rae Sykes returns at DE and will probably play some TE this year. He is leaning towards LSU at the next level. Shiverdecker, Lanxter, & Hicks return on defense. They might also be getting another stud transfer like they did last year when Chris Shiverdecker transferred to Alcoa.

2) Male (Home) maybe another opponent IF a bowl gets done at Hoptown.

3) AT Mayfield

4) Memphis Ridgeway (MAYBE and that's a strong maybe)

5) Christian Co.

6-10) will be all district games

With the strength of their preseason it will be very beneficial to Hopkinsville. Especially the O-Line. The O-Line has the potential to be as good as the 2001 O-Line and could be the biggest since the 99 team if all goes as the Coaches hope.

That is OVER scheduling at its best. The Tigers could be looking at an 0-5 start when you consider how inexperienced they will be. Its nice to talk about tough schedules, but that could do more harm than good.

The Tigers aren't as inexperienced as outsiders want to think.

Alcoa will again be the best team they face all year including the playoffs. Mayfield lost their share of players and Hoptown always plays well there with the exception of the 2000 team. Christian Co. lost 16 seniors 14 of which started or was in their rotation. Tandy is back but he lost his RB and top 2 WR's and their depth won't be as strong as it was this past year. Ridgeway may or may not be on the schedule. By the time district play starts Hoptown should be in good shape and have the potential to be better then last years team that before the season started people said Dixie Jones would have them 5-5 at best.
