December 8, 200520 yr "We have a disagreeable habit of focusing on what is important for kids. I have a real problem with the way these proposals do not appear to be all that concerned with the kids." :thumb:
December 8, 200520 yr No matter the outcome, there will be people on both sides that feel the needs of their children were not being considered. That comment is a truly political comment to tug on the heartstrings of the reader. If Prop 20 is defeated, the publics will say the needs of their kids are not being considered. If Prop 20 is upheld, the privates will say the needs of their kids are not being considered.

December 8, 200520 yr I really do hope that a solution can be found. I think that the proposals by the Catholic schools offer a very good starting point. I think that some of the leaders on the public side should think very long and hard before they reject a compromise. I think that if a compromise is not reached the BOE will reject Prop 20 outright. That isn't a good solution because it will keep the issues on the front burner. I think that the real problem for people like Sexton and Speers is that deep in their hearts they know that any reasonable compromise will do very little to change the results on the field. They are not after a level playing field. They are after public school wins.
December 8, 200520 yr A parent who thinks Prop 20 benefits there kids in the real world is a parent who needs to wake up and get their get ready for something we call life. And anyone who thinks life is not filled with government programs to "level the playing field" needs to wake up.
December 8, 200520 yr And anyone who thinks life is not filled with government programs to "level the playing field" needs to wake up. Maybe we need to re-work the government programs. :sssh:
December 8, 200520 yr Maybe we need to re-work the government programs. :sssh: I would not have a problem with that. But re-work the gov't programs will not see politicians get elected, so I don't think it will happen.
December 8, 200520 yr Somerset school superintendent Wilson Sears, one of the separation leaders, said in a telephone interview last night: "We want the private schools, to the extent possible, to play with the exact same rules -- feeder systems, boundaries -- that the public schools play by. If that can be achieved, through whatever means, we will be happy." But Sears said he is not optimistic about reaching a compromise by Feb 1. C-J Story Interesting statement here considering district-to-disctrict, there are discrepancies in feeder systems and boundaries. Even now, we are playing by the same "rules" as the rest of the publics...especially in open enrollment districts. Would Mr. Sears have the open enrollment public schools revert to closed districts?
December 8, 200520 yr Courier Journal Article on this vote Here's an interesting quote: Somerset school superintendent Wilson Sears, one of the separation leaders, said in a telephone interview last night: "We want the private schools, to the extent possible, to play with the exact same rules -- feeder systems, boundaries -- that the public schools play by. If that can be achieved, through whatever means, we will be happy." But Sears said he is not optimistic about reaching a compromise by Feb. 1. Seems like he'll only be happy if he gets his exact way, no compromise at all. Are you people from Somerset (and I know there are some of you here) really happy that such a seemingly close minded person in in charge of the education of your children. Talk about the "let me win or I'll take my ball and go home attitude". The public schools want no compromise, they want their way and they will not be happy until they get it. LBBC: With all due respect, can't you for once get past your issues with private schools and see that maybe, just maybe, the state BOE is looking out for what is best for ALL students and not just those that attend public schools.
December 8, 200520 yr RM: Great minds must think alike Wow! That's freaky! Seriously.... The athletic issues will not be resolved to some people's satisfaction even if Privates set boundaries, etc. The underlying issue is not athletic, nor even a state-wide public issue at all; it's about districts and feeder systems. That's a local decision, and frankly, will not be resolved ever. Most closed districts are not going to change to open enrollment; and I'm about 95% sure open enrollment systems will not revert to closed districts.
December 8, 200520 yr C-J Story Interesting statement here considering district-to-disctrict, there are discrepancies in feeder systems and boundaries. Even now, we are playing by the same "rules" as the rest of the publics...especially in open enrollment districts. Would Mr. Sears have the open enrollment public schools revert to closed districts? My view would be yes. And you can't just open enrollment to every school district. Rural counties lose out in that situation because you are not going to drive an hour to attend school. What you will do is MOVE there but now you are in the school boundaries.
December 8, 200520 yr It seems that now both sides will be forced to act like adults and discuss this thing. The factless, baseless rumors floating around about this thing have been nothing short of a dispute between gradeschoolers. Being an Owensboro Catholic fan I can't tell you how many times I have said, "That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Again, that is just in Owensboro I can't begin to imagine the things going around in Louisville, Lexington, NKY, and the East. Hopefully Mr. Sears and people on both sides can use there head and get this as close to right as possible. No more rumors, just steps to get this thing resolved.
