For those at the game any idea of the "do over" play? I don't think I've seen that before.

I believe they said there was an inadvertant whistle. The whole game was poorly officiated. Both sides seemed very upset at points. And they usually had a fair case.

Bizarre to say the least. What about the fair catch? Shaky officiating.

I asked some other officials when would you have a "do over" type play and described what I saw in this play. They speculated that when the officials got together that they decided that the side judge probably blew the whistle too early. In that case as I understand it the offensive team can either take the result of the play(Boone recovered the ball) or play the down over. Fortunately for Conner they still got the first down.

It was an odd-looking play.

You are incorrect on the pick. It bounced before Schwartz got it. You are correct on the fumble that ended up being an inadvertent whistle. I didn't think the officiating was bad at all other than that missed fumble and the missed fair catch.

Don't really like to blame officiating for subpar performances. Every game will have some questionable calls and that's part of sports. Bottomline in this game was that Conner shot themselves in the foot far to often and had plenty of opportunities to win this ball game. They will have some good "takeaways" from this game to build on. You only lose if you don't learn.

A few things I forgot to mention:

 

1. Love the new Conner blue uniforms. Tight.

 

2. Great crowd last night. Hopefully, both schools continue to get fan support.

 

3. Good to see Conner with a tough out-of-district schedule that will prepare them for the district games.

 

4. A big salute to 2009(2010?) Conner grad Eric Thomas(basketball/baseball) who is deploying to Afghanistan soon. He and two of his fellow soldiers were honored last night. Keep your head low, son.

In regards to Drew Barker and "not as good as advertised."

 

He ran for well over 100 yards. Showed very good poise in the pocket despite a strong Boone rush. Did a pretty good job of going through his progression. I had him as 10/18 before the last desperation drive where he had 3 long incompletions. His only pick was actually a smart play. 4th down at the Boone 20 or so and under heavy pressure threw the ball to the goal line instead of taking the sack. Boone picked it but took over at their own 5.

 

He put 4 scoring drives that got near the goal line together.

 

Ran like a man. On a few plays Boone simply could not take him to the ground with 5 or 6 guys in the scrum and the whistle was blown.

 

Made a few bad throws but not many bad throws. Had maybe 2 drops. Until the last drive didn't have any long attempts. I thought he did a pretty nice job considering the pressure he was under. Plenty of room for improvement for a 15 yr old kid.

 

He's going to be under the microscope since colleges are showing a lot of interest. He'll have to live with the criticism that comes with the expectations.

 

Seeing Barker in two pre-season games, I think you are spot on in your comments. I said all pre-season that he was much more impressive running the ball than passing it. The other point I made several times in pre-season threads is the kid is a sophomore. Sophomore QB's make mistakes and need to do a lot of growing before they get close to their talent. Barker needs some slack. Enjoy the ride Conner fans. My guess is this time next year you will see a much better version than what you see now and being excited about the prospects for a special season.

Something else I really thought was a first class move was acknowledging the tragic death of young Austin Hagedorn who was a Boone County student. Austin was involved in a tragic boating accident last week and a moment of silence was conducted in his memory. RIP young Austin, you will be missed by many.
