Good coach going to a good program. I can't believe it took SL this long to hire a coach, but they lucked out by hiring Jeff.

Congrats to Jeff. Bad loss for SK but one I'm sure they where planning on. Coach Steiner knew who wouldnt be around for ever. Be interesting to see who SK hires, if anybody to replace him. Good luck to Coach Davis.

Just met Jeff and talked to him for about an hour today. He seems like a great guy and you can tell he's got a lot of energy — something the South Laurel program needs. He's going to do well, I believe. He did confirm both Jessie Sizemore and Dennis Hammonds will be two of his assistants this season. He's ready for the season to start, I'll tell ya that. So he stomps on the floor the officials will have fun with this one. I look forward to seeing SL playing Bell County this B-ball season.

I thought he wanted the beechwood position.

He did! But I am guessing Beechwood took their time, and during that time Coach Davis and SL got together and SL made the offer before Beechwood. A great opporunity for him to start out at a program like SL! Not many coaches get a chance to coach at a school with a basketball history like at SL.

Yea, I am glad coach Davis landed the job he wanted. Who gets the Beechwood position.

New boys’ basketball coach ready and excited to lead the Cardinals

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. —

 

The search is finally over.

 

After two months of reviewing and interviewing applicants, South Laurel has finally found its new boys’ basketball coach.

 

Davis comes to South Laurel after serving as an assistant coach at Simon Kenton High School for the past five years. The 33-year-old is originally from Russell, and was graduated from Fairview High School in 1996. Two years out of high school, he served as an assistant at Russell High School, then moved onto Morehead State University, where he was a student assistant and then assistant coach. He returned to Russell for one year, where the Red Devils won their first region title in 34 years in the 2005-06 season. From there, he moved onto Simon Kenton.

 

One thing that Davis liked is the length of time the previous coaches stayed with the Cardinals.

 

“Steve was here for 21 years, and the guy before him (Chuck Broughton) was here a long time,” Davis said. “Coaches stay at this program. I love that stability, and the fans back this program. They love it.”

 

Davis prefers his team to be quick and aggressive on both ends of the court. But he said he will have alter things to fit his players.

 

“I like to run and press, but that depends on what we have,” Davis said. “To play that style you have got to play hard. I’m coming in here to work hard, to do the best I can and to have the team prepared and competitive. That’s the only promise I can make.”
