July 12, 201115 yr And I say bravo! http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43718876/ns/business-small_business/?GT1=43001
July 12, 201115 yr I wish more would follow suit. If I'm going to a nice restaurant, I don't want to have to deal with whiny kids crying, running around, or just being a general annoyance.
July 12, 201115 yr I think it is the choice for an owner of a place to refuse kids, smokers, etc. His business, he should run it as he chooses. But than what happens if he elects to limit his customers by race or sex or religious beliefs? If that happens, than we have to move this thread to another forum???
July 12, 201115 yr The owner brings up a great point, this sounds like it's a nice -- and therefore expensive -- place to eat. Why would you want to bring your kids there? In fact, the more friends of mine who take their kids places and then spend the entire time wrangling them... why would you want to bring your kids anywhere? Now I know why my parents stopped having a social life for a number of years; it's just easier.

I can only hope what this owner did will be repeated by some establishments around here! Too many parents today have zero parenting skills. I can't tell you how many bad experiences I've had when we've gone out to dinner and someone at another table lets their kid(s) do whatever they please.
July 12, 201115 yr Author My rule of thumb when choosing restaurants here in Louisville for the family is: "If there isn't a kids menu then kids aren't supposed to be there."

A couple of years ago there was a restaurant in Mason Ohio who put up a sign that said soemthing like "You must speak English, if not you will be refused". Clearly aimed at the hispanic community. It was either the county or the state said he could do that as it's a private business, but said it wasn't the best PR move.

It has to do with communication. I'd say he'd have that right but agree it's not the best PR move.

He's not openly discriminating against any particular race/gender/religion. In that case, he's saying English, and language isn't a protected class. Many hispanics speak English to an extent. One question that would bring about for me....if I owned a restaurant and no one on my staff spoke Spanish, how would I be expected to communicate with my Hispanic patrons?

July 12, 201115 yr I think it is a great idea. I hate it when you are expecting a nice evening out, and are then subjected to whinny, unruly kids. When my children were young, I would have understood that policy, and likely would have hired a sitter to enjoy a kid free night there. Too many parents do not make their children behave, and think everyone else thinks they are as adorable as they do. Let the parents boycott the restaurant, or whine like their children. I bet business is better than ever at the child free place.
July 12, 201115 yr While I agree in principle I would be willing to bet that this will be legally challenged and ruled illegal. All adult apartment complexes are no longer allowed on the basis of discrimination.
July 12, 201115 yr Then what about Augusta National? It's a private club. As a matter of fact I think you have to be invited to join. You can't just walk in and sign up but I could be wrong about that.
July 12, 201115 yr As far as the resturant goes I am firmly in the camp that it's your business and you should be allowed to do as you wish with it.
