Woodford County's Johnson suffers torn ACL

Featured Replies

Woodford County's Jay Johnson, one of the top high school basketball players in Kentucky, will miss at least the first part of his senior season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in a recent state AAU game.

The 6-foot-6 Johnson, who averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds as a junior, will have surgery in the next couple of weeks. Yellowjackets Coach Scott Hundley said Johnson's rehabilitation is expected to take about six months.

Johnson has scholarship offers from Coastal Carolina, Morehead State and NKU.

Awful awful injury. I believe I saw this injury when it happened at the Ky State AAU tourney. He went down holding his knee and the next day he was on crutches. I think it was initially believed to be a torn tendon and not serious. I wonder if he tried to play on it and did further damage. I hate that for the kid and hopefully he can come back. We lost our starting point guard, Jacob Bodner(baseball scholarship to Xavier University), to a torn ACL in October and he was back playing baseball by May and cleared for pitching in June. It is definitely possible for Johnson to make it back by February. He would have been a top candidate for Mr. Basketball and wish him a speedy recovery.

I really hate this too. Agree that he would have been a top candidate for Mr. Basketball. Each individual heals different ways. Purvis of GRC torn his ACL at the very beginning of his Sophomore year and had to sit out the whole year. He never really did return to his old form before the injury.

To truly be 100% this injury takes a year. I hope for a fast recovery for this young man. Enjoy watching him play. I hope those around him makes sure he is 100% before he returns.

He didnt play on it further. He injured it at the AAU state championship. To the young man's credit he was with his team for the rest of that tourney and at the bluegrass championships just to support them. I spoke with him in at the bgc and he was obviously very disappointed. Best wishes on a quick recovery Jay.

Great kid. Very disappointed when I heard about this. Would love to see him make it back late in the season, but more importantly, hope it doesn't keep college coaches from offering him a scholarship.

Missing his senior season in high school has to be very disappointing for him but he has a bright future ahead of him so it's more important that he just gets that knee right. Would be interesting to see how he is around January or February when things start heating up for districts and regionals. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

If it's just the ACL then the recovery should be shorter than it would if he had torn multiple ligaments. I believe 6 months or less.

They won't know until they get in their and start poking around. Also depending on if it was a full or partial tear, and lastly how the young man heals and how well the graft they use takes.

Best of luck to the young man that's gotta be extremely disappointing heading into his senior year I'm sure he was hoping to pick up some more offers.

This was what my son and I were talking about last night. Really feel for this kid.
