June 15, 201115 yr Author What is your diet like now? Go through a typical week. Also what kind of work outs do you do? Typical week m-f I wake up and either go to the gym or straight to work. I usually eat a small container of the greek yougurt; depending on whether I go to the gym or not this can take place any where from 8:30 am to 10:15 am. Then I go to work, usually grab my lunch around 1 or 1:30. Ususally I get it at my works cafeteria, a wrap on white with either grilled chicken or tuna, no matter which I get it's the same toppings with lettuce, and cheddar cheese. Then for my snack at 5:30 is usually when I'll drink a protein shake w/milk. Then dinner is pretty much up in the air. Dinner is probably where I need to focus the most because that's when I eat the worst and the most inconsistant.
June 15, 201115 yr There are a lot of diets and exercise routines out there to try. The best one is the one that you can stick with. Everybody is different. Some people don't mind not eating carbs, so the Atkins diet works for them. Some people must have carbs, so they try other things. Some people like to run, some walk, bike, swim, row, etc. What ever you can stick with and becomes a routine is the best one for you. If it doesn't feel like you are giving up something you love, it just may work.

But you there are no essential carbs. I will agree that some people perform poorly and have a had time adjusting without carbs but given time you will. Increase veggies and fruit to combat this.
June 15, 201115 yr Actually no one has to have carbs. When I said some people must have carbs, I didn't mean it literally. Some people just won't stick to a diet that eliminates some of the foods they love. My daughter could never stick to an Atkins diet, but she can stick to other ones.

June 16, 201115 yr One of the biggest frauds in health and fitness. Low fat does not work! Your story is a good one. I remember when Atkins first became popular and how I thought it was a joke. That was mainly because I was uneducated on the subject. Where I do think atkins falls short is if you do much more then walk/light running. Correct me if I am wrong but atkins pretty much eliminates carbs of any kind correct? Or is there a set limit you can have? Since my weight loss I have ran the Flying Pig Half Marathon, Papa Johns 10 miler, and raced in over 20 5K races in the past year. I run 3-4 times a week, averaging 3-4 miles at a time. Since starting my diet I have lowered my 5K time from 50 mins to 23 mins. The running along with the diet I feel is what has worked or made my loss a success. Atkins does not elminate carbs all together. I personally try to stay around 20-30 a day. How much you eat depends on what type of food you eat. It's all about Net Carbs. You can subtract the fiber, and sugar achohol to get the net carb.
June 17, 201115 yr I didn't realize it was net. So you can have net 20-30 a day? Thats not bad. When I did a Keto back in the spring trying to lean out I was only getting 10-15 gross. However I was doing a refeed on Saturday and would get about 50 that I counted then 1 meal I would eat whatever...ice cream, cake, pretty much anything I could get my hands on.
June 17, 201115 yr Also, not having any money has done wonders for me. So anyone out there that needs to shed some lbs, I'd recommend being foolish with your money.

For me yes I tried to stay around 20 net carbs a day. Now that I have hit my target weight I have gone to 30-40 a day and exercising more to try to maintain my weight. The last 2 months I have lost 1.5 pounds trying to maintain. Now the most important thing is, you can not cheat! The way I understand it you are getting your body to burn fat by reducing your net carbs. If you was to eat a slice of pizza on the weekend, it will hurt all your hard work during the week to train your body to burn fat. If your hungry find something to eat that has no or low net carbs. Pork Rinds are a must for this diet (0 carbs). I have a home made cheese ball or home made pimento cheese that I prefer to spread on my pork rinds if I'm hungry for a snack. After time you find things that you can eat that are low in carbs to keep you from getting hungry. Once you get your metabolism burning, the pounds just fall off. This is a chart of my loss over the past year and a half. My recommendation is that if anyone diets that you do not weigh daily. Step on the scales one a week. Give yourself some time to get some results. June 17, 201115 yr What I was doing was a CKD (cyclical keto diet). Atkins is a keto diet in the sense it puts your body in ketosis. The difference like you mentioned is on Atkins there is no carb re-feed day. If you are trying to improve your strength as well as conditioning Atkins probably isn't a good choice. The reason being that your muscles use glycogen for fuel during short intense burst like when doing squats or bench or ect...When you in ketosis your glycogen levels are extremely low and will be depleted in a few days of lifting. You do a re-feed day to re-fuel your muscles of the glycogen. When your body is in a state of ketosis it starts to burn fat for fuel. This is why Atkins and other low carb diets work so well. When the body burns fat for fuel it begins producing ketone which are used for energy. Many of the organs work better when burning ketones for energy as opposed to glucose, including the heart. However the some parts of the brain cannot burn ketones for energy and must have glucose. When you are on a low carb diet the body will hord the available glucose to fuel the brain. Glugose is used to produce glycogen so if you don't do re-feeds at least once per week your strength training will suffer big time. If you are not doing high intensity workouts or weight training then the 20-30 grams would be sufficent. BTW, your progress is amazing. No quick fix or magic pill. You treated the illness instead of the sympton with a lifestyle change the way it should be. Congrats. For me yes I tried to stay around 20 net carbs a day. June 17, 201115 yr Rebel, that's amazing. Something happened the other day that scared that crap out of me. The only thing the doctors can find wrong, so far, is excessive fat around my liver that showed up when they had me get an abdominal ultrasound to check my gall bladder. The liver is the processor of the fat, so the object of this game is to reduce the workload of the liver. That rules out Atkins. I have no choice but to reduce the fat intake. Like All Tell, I have to move more, eat less. I usually eat only once or twice a day. That has to change. I've started eating smaller meals, 3 reasonable portioned meals, and 3 snacks consisting of veggies and fruit. I have to treat meat, almost as a condiment. Also, until they can determine what is really wrong, no beer. It sucks, but I've got no choice. I've also started walking. We'll see how it goes.
