May 4, 201115 yr Obama wasn't in the Senate when the Iraq vote was made ... at the time, he was still a state legislator in Illinois. However, I believe his position has consistently been that he was for the action in Afghanistan but not for the action in Iraq. Thanks. I was thinking he was always for invading Afghanistan and not Iraq.

May 4, 201115 yr Those that are opposed to "enhanced interrogation techniques" are so because of what they represent, a loss of our moral authority. This country was built on freedom and the respect of individual rights, values that are even employed in the implementation of our criminal justice system. We're supposed to be the country that doesn't torture its "enemy combatants" ... when we do, we've started to put ourselves in the same category as those we oppose. To many people, Guantanamo Bay is that place where our moral authority begins to erode. Three people is still three too many, since waterboarding is considered torture and is still of questionable interrogation value. The problem with Guantanamo Bay isn't the location, but what is or has been done there. According to Rummy, waterboarding did not happen at GITMO. It did happen in Poland and Romania and they admitted that Khalid Sheik Mohammad had been WB’d three times... just not in GITMO.

That's one thing that I think alot of people are naive about, closing GITMO won't change much. In regards to the water boarding, or enhanced interrogation techniques the US just like many other jobs has no problem outsourcing them to other countries, so as to keep our hands clean of any "wrong doing".
May 4, 201115 yr Waterboarding, yes. The other stuff you mention, no ... of course, some of that depends on what "getting rough" entails. Throwing them up against walls, I'm sure they toss them around a bit. Like I said before, we have very different meanings of torture. I personally do not put water-boarding under that category. So you would not water-board under any and I mean ANY circumstances?

The others however who say differently, it should be viewed as they are just trying to use this situation to show the enhanced techniques should be used. Rumsfeld and Sen Graham said no waterboarding or enhanced techniques were used. FWIW Rumsfeld was misquoted. He said water-boarding on the 3 people was not done at Gitmo. He did admit enhanced interrogations unquestionably worked and helped the US get valuable intelligence.

The United States doesn't outsource it, it's still done by the CIA or US agents. The reason these places exist is to circumvent United States' and international legal standards.

Yes, people do misspeak then go back and change it. Calm it down on the caffeine. I provided a link and interview to what he said. Don't throw a fit because of it. Its not irrational to ask a fellow poster to provide a link showing their assertions. Maybe he did misspeak. But he is saying it now so I hope you have all that enthusiasm still about someone under Bush saying this and how it should stick out. Or now are you going to disregard everything he says because it doesn't line up with your ideology?
