NDA 72 Ryle 62

Happens to the best of us

Great question! When she did come in it "seemed" like she always came in for Johnson who is Ryle's best defender. In a game like this, the top/experienced performers need to stay on the floor until they have nothing left to give.

I'm not a fan of Ryle by any stretch, but I truly feel for Abby and the Jump family. When you dedicate yourself to the game like Abby has...this is a very tough time when the realization sets-in that your HS career is over regardless of when/how it ended. It's really tough on the parents as well and it'll hurt for quite a while, but she'll soon turn her focus to bigger & better things and this loss will be a distant memory.

During the boy's game this evening Abby Jump approached me and expressed very sincere thanks for the little things I have done for Ryle basketball (simply taking pics over the years). She clearly was sorry to see it end but brightened up when I told her I would try to make it up to Wright State for a game in the future. Pretty classy move for someone who just saw her high school career end the night before and someone I really don't know all that well. Abby will be fine and Wright State has not only gotten themselves a great ball player but a very nice person.

The only 2 seniors on the team are Abby Jump and Liz Meyer. They have Crittendon, Douthit, Cheeseman and Dixon returning as Seniors. Johnson returning as a Junior. Plus, a couple of good athletes from the JV team.

Shock, I must comment on a very glaring omission; McKell Oliverio returns as a Junior with three years of varsity experience. While not touted as a talent on these boards McKell is a fundamentally sound player with skills and lots of potential. She is also a very special young lady who should never be forgotten.

My bad, no disrespect to McKell. At 53 I'm starting to have a few lapses.:)

Aren't we all?

So many good post on the thread, but the big question is "What happened to Ryle?" Peek early? Too much travel? Lingering illness? Some other issue under the surface? Don't know - don't have kids at Ryle, but didn't seem to be the same team as a few weeks ago. The looked relieved when the game ended. Maybe they took BGPer's advice RE "calm down" pills! And the shooting, ouch! NDA had some nice offense, taking advantage of Ryle's weak defense and poor inside game. Congrats to the Pandas!

Refs that night were laughable at times on both sides. Wouldn't want their job, but I would at least try to know the rules if I did!

Loved what KeepitReal said RE coaching situation. Not every girl can play for Nell Fookes - and many wouldn't want to! I am not a fan, but she does a great job taking good talent and making it great, plus taking average girls and making them very good! There are current Ryle parents that have pondered getting their dtrs in the BC program for that reason! However, in Union it seems more the norm to stay loyal to your community, stick with your classmates and get whatever coach you get. Might never win the 9th region trophies that way (or even the districts!), but there are trade-offs.

Coach O does a decent job, despite softball, and despite not being Nell! But she will always have a tough job as long as NF is right up the road at BC.

Such a sad time for seniors! Abby Jump is a great example of someone who took a little talent and a lot of determination and went far! 4 or 5 years in varsity? D1 scholarship? Parents with smaller, but hungry young bballers could look to her for inspiration. She will be missed at Ryle! (and why DID she sit so much of game?)

Still some great match-ups left this week. I like NCC to beat NDA, then upset BC! But, Miss Moss is crazy good and BC has a great chance of going far in Bowling Green! Good luck ladies!

Wow, over 2200 views on this thread. paNDA, you and Jumpball are right about Abby Jump. Very nice young lady who absolutely loves the game of basketball. I really want to thank paNDA for his contributions to the Northern Kentucky sports scene. I know we sure appreciate your pictures and I know the players do as well.

I would say Boone is the favorite going into this weekend but honestly, any of the 4 could win it all with NCC being the slight favorite, IMO, to upset Boone. I, like many of us on here, would love to see the 9th win it all! Me, I'm getting geared up for the AAU season.

Are you just trying to test everyone's memory with this line?

Or were you trying to be funny?

I am new to this website and very disappointed as to the amount of bashing of coaches, referees and players that goes on in these forums. Although I've not seen many Ryle games this year, I did happen to attend the regular season game against Boone and the District Championship game against Boone and I agree Ryle has some very talented young woman but they are missing one key piece of the puzzle that makes a team complete.......a couple true post players (or even one would have helped). This just isn't something a high school coach can control (in most cases). If you have no big, strong athletic girls try-out for the team, then you have to go with what you have since recruiting players in HS is illegal (again for most). For this reason, from my understanding, Ryle has had to convert Jenna Crittenden to play a post position when she was actually mostly a shooting guard/forward in the past. If she is having an off game underneath, they have no one who can replace her in the paint and then Ryle can't get their shooters open on the perimeter. Ryle has some really good outside shooters but unless you can get the ball down low and score to open up the outside game, it's not too hard to defend this team. And when you have to play a team with a post player like Moss without any true post players to help defend her, the outcome isn't going to be a good one regardless who is coaching the team!

Oliverio is an excellent coach and even more important, a very good person with the best interest of the girls at heart. Let's do what's right and quit bashing her and everyone else (players, referees, etc.). I commend Oliverio for the ability to motivate her girls to come back from a large deficit against NCC and make a game out of it. This isn't the first time I seen her be able to motivate her team to come back from a deficit. The regular season against Boone was a good come back game as well and they actually got the win that time. It's not easy to motivate a bunch of girls once they fall that far behind in a game! The girls start to shut down, deflate and give up completely unless you have a good coach with excellent motivational skills and Oliverio has shown she definitely has that! So, let's give credit where credit is due and quit blaming or trying to find blame. That would be a welcome change on this site in general!

This is a forum and everyone is intitled to their opinion. If it upsets you don't read what everyone has to say!

Nell has had 26 years to build her program while Patti has been in place for only 4 years. No offense to any previous coaches that Ryle had before but Ryle did not have a winning tradition in basketball before Oliverio took over and she has done it while playing a much more difficult schedule. Ryle had players before that had talent but did not get the same exposure to D-1 coaches.Something else Patti has done for her players is to use her contacts with college coaches to promote her players. She has taken the Ryle players to some of the top Women's college programs summer camps (UT, UK, Lousiville, Xavier, UC), she has scheduled games with Lexington and Louisville teams and has taken Ryle to tournaments where there would be both college recruiters and AAU recruiters so these young ladies would have the best chance to gain notice and have opportunities for scholarships. College recruiters respect Coach Oliverio and her program and she works relentlessly to help the young ladies she coaches both in softball and basketball to obtain scholarships. Noone cares more or works harder for her players or receives less credit. It is such a shame that "current Ryle parents" cannot show loyalty to this coach and what she has done for their daughters.

Coach O is in a no win situation. When the team wins it because of talent and when they lose it is because of the "poor coaching". Talent is only the capacity to succeed it is not a guarantee for success. It is up to each player to take the talent and potential she has and compete. It takes heart to be a winner and step up in the big games. Talent alone will not get it done and as long as you blame the officials or the coach for your loses noone learns accountability or responsibility.

Best wishes to Abby at the next level. I know Coach Oliverio thinks the world of you and recognizes how much you have given to the Ryle program. Playing for her the last 4 years has prepared you more than you know to succeed at Wright State.

I was just looking at the views of the last 2 Ryle- Boone games and the Ryle- NDA game and their have been over 6200 views! Wow... we are now encroaching on the boys territory. I love the interest in our girls basketball.

I believe Ryle has their share of loyal fans and supporters. I know that we are. Sure they have their disgruntled followers too. Who doesn't? I can't wait to do it all over again next season. As a side note; Are there any really tall and physical girls transferring into the Ryle District between now and next season?
When you claim to have 6 "D1" players on your team.... people are naturally inclined to have high expectations.
Where have you been BombSquad? Haven't heard much negative out of you in a while?

Were you at the game? Motivating from Oliverio?
