Boyle County's coaching situation

Featured Replies

Everybody knows that Chuck Smith was very successful at Boyle County, then moved on to bigger and better things at UK. Boyle County's current coach, Larry French, has been very successful at Boyle County. It's my understanding that he's not exactly a young fella and that he will be due to retire pretty soon, maybe in the next couple of years. I have heard from more than one source that there's talk of Chuck Smith coming back to coach at Boyle County when Larry French retires. Initially I didn't think much of the rumor, but I've heard this from more than one person now and am starting to wonder if it's true.

Does anyone know if Chuck Smith is thinking of returning to Boyle County for another run as head coach of the Rebels?

Chuck Smith seems pretty content at UK. However, food for thought here. His son is an assistant at Warren East, I believe. I could see Chuck Smith coming back to the program and even bringing his son back as well. I doubt it but you never know. I'm not basing this on anything that I heard. I do know that when the day comes for Larry French to retire that they will definitely go hard after Chuck Smith. Everyone knows that. Guess we won't know til the day comes.

When did his son go to Warren East? I looked on his website and didn't see him listed among the coaches.

Brandon Smith is an assistant at South Warren HS.

Brandon Smith was the smartest player I ever played against, I could see him going into coaching.

I think Coach French will be around for at least the next 2 years. After that.......:idunno: I'd be shocked if he left within the next 2 years but he has earned the right to leave whenever he wants whether it is 1,2 or 5 years.

This is the first that I have heard of this rumor. Larry has already retired from teaching and I believe he loves every second of just coaching. It's like a hobby to pass the time doing something that you love. To be honest, I feel Larry isn't going any where anytime soon.

I was going to say the same thing. I'm not sure, but I believe he may have retired from teaching the year he left Lincoln County. Either way, barring any type of health issue, I think French will likely be at Boyle County for several more years.

I said Warren East because I wasn't sure. That's why I said, "I believe". However, I was wrong and probably should have checked before posting. But as Blockbuster said, he is an assistant at South Warren HS. Sorry about that folks. :thumb:

I agree with this. It would take alot for French to retire. He absolutely loves Boyle County. They gave him back to back state titles, so why wouldn't he?

Another thing after thinking about this. Chuck has nothing to gain and EVERYTHING to lose if he came back to Boyle. No person in their right mind could expect him to do what he did in the past at Boyle. IMO the next Smith to coach at Boyle would not be named Chuck.

At this point this thread should probably be closed until a coaching change is imminent. Kind of weird for a Highlands fan to start a thread about a coaching situation that isn't a situation yet. It's fun to speculate about who may be next and all but no one in Boyle County(at least to my knowledge) has mentioned any serious discussions about Coach French and when he will step away. Seems kind of disrespectful to Coach French and the coaching staff, IMO.

^ I didn't mean it to be disrespectful towards the current coach. I have certainly not heard anything about Coach French being pushed into retiring earlier than he wants to. What I posted in my original post is exactly what I've heard... that WHEN he retires there may be a good chance Chuck Smith will be the next coach at BC. And in regards to my supporting Highlands, I think you will find that I have demonstrated my high regard for Boyle County's football program on several occasions!

I think everyone would agree that it would be nuts to think BC would ever put pressure of Coach French to retire, given what he's done as a coach! BUT, nobody coaches forever...

That comment was made just before the 2003 Highlands-Boyle County regular season game. I believe I predicted a Highlands win by a final score of something like 235-2. I was sorta close... if I remember correctly Boyle County's first score of that game came on a safety!

Seriously though, my intention in this thread was not to upset folks. I have no clue whether Coach Smith will/will not come back to Boyle County. However, at some point in the future BC is gonna have a new coach after Coach French retires from the sideline.
