Congrats Nate and Camels in the Crosstown Shootout

Congrats to Nate! They must have been keying on him, how did he manage to get 4?

 

Hit a three, was fouled, made the free throw. 4 point play.

A) The Brossart Freshmen are pretty good. Are 5-0 and own a 50-22 win over Boone County, so don't feel so bad. Drew Burns, also a Mustang freshmen debuted in the JV game and will be a major asset to the freshmen group when they all hook up again next year. Erik Rieger, Jake's little brother, is another freshman who will make an impact down the road. Hasn't seen any action yet this year due to an injured shoulder.

 

B) Brossart foul shooting, which is normally consistently pretty good, was atrocious tonight - actually 10 of 21. Bad sign when Zach Fardo went to the line and missed 3 straight - the free-throw shooting gods were definitely not smiling on us tonight. Campbell County hit on 17 of 22.

 

C) GREAT game, will go down in the annals of the Crosstown series as a true classic and will be remembered and discussed for a lot of years.

 

D) McGoveny was not covered because what appeared to be the final shot of the game was missed by Corey Cox, BUT Josh Graff pulled down the rebound and found McGovney on the right wing, and McGovney knocked down the 3 + 1.

 

E) Travis Norton tried to put the Mustangs on his senior shoulders tonight, scoring a career high 23 points. Dylan Dierig hit the off-balance jumper to send the overtime, and barely missed duplicating the effort from half court with time expiring in the overtime period from beyond mid-court.

 

F) I earned a whole new respect for Nathan McGovney tonight. In the past I had considered him an offensive whiz who was capable of putting points on the board in bunches. Nate played a great game last night on both ends of the floor. He and the Camels played great defense - perhaps a carry over from the previous coaching staff - and Nate deflected/blocked a number of shots, ran the floor extremely well and was always the primary physical presence for the Camels when he was out there.

 

G) Anybody who blows this game off as just a meaningless early season, regular season game, has rocks in their head. It was a 37th District seeding event which gives the Camels a leg up for the top seed IF they can defeat the Scott Eagles.

 

H) This was one of the loudest, most involved crowds that I have ever seen witness a Crosstown Classic. I was wearing headsets, but my impression was that both student sections kept it clean, and that the entire event was a great exercise in community involvement and spirited rivalry. It hasn't always been that way.

 

I) Congratulatons to Coach Aric Russell on his first crosstown victory and to the Camels on a well played basketball game.

Hats off to both teams. What an amazing game and such a great atmosphere. Both student sections were out in full force.

 

The game was back and forth the entire time and you just knew that it was going to come down to the last play. The Camels played good team ball and solid defense. Graff came up with a huge board at the end and McGovney buried the game winner with 4.5 seconds to go.

 

For the Mustangs, I was very impressed with the improvement of Jennings.

 

The trips made it through the game like champs. The noise bothered them at times though.

Great recap and balanced evaluation Mustang. I didn't think that Coach Code was ever going to run out of timeouts. I believe that he used all 5 within a few minute span. Congrats to both squads....what a game!

Great game!! Fun to watch the Camels get out and move the ball up and down the court. Some of the defense may have been a carryover but two of the Camels starters didn't play basketball last year for a reason. The boys love to move the ball up and down the floor and play offense with a purpose. I was at the game and listened to the replay after. Great job Mustang as usual. One point, I liked when during the broadcast, Mustang, when a Brossart player fouled a Camel, he said, that was a good foul, if your going to foul make sure they don't get the shot off, but on his website he has a picture of a Camel, making sure the Brossart player doesnt get the shot off and he wanted an intentional foul called. I love your school spirit Mustang, keep up the good work and your most definitely right when you said it was a classic last night and will be talked about for a long time.:ylsuper::ylsuper:

I definitely got my moneys worth last night. Great game by both squads. I'm really impressed with Losey, after taking a 1 year sabbatical he proved his 27 the other night was not a fluke. He can throw it up! I agree with Mustang that McGovney has stepped up his defensive play. His points came mostly from the line last night, but that was due to his ability to take it to the rack. His court presence is amazing. Norton stood out for the Mustangs last night as did Joe Jennings. I'm betting coach Code has the boys shooting a few free throws in practice this week?? I witnessed all 3 events last night. The Brossart Mustang freshman squad are indeed very talented. They dominated the freshman game and logged a lot of minutes in the JV event.

Wow, sounds like a great game to watch. Im sure McGovney was fired up last night playing the Stangs and to get that opportunity at the end is just amazing. Congrats to that young man. I think many in this area dont realize but McGovney has always been a great defender and all through AAU ball as a youngster, he ruled the court ont he defensive side setting up a lot of his offense with steals and easy layups. His length is very affective and if he gets a little taller he will be even better.

 

Congrats to both teams for giving the fans their money's worth.

Losey may have taken a sabbatical from basketball at the high school level. He was playing ball though. Glad to see him back. As for McGovney, defense has been one of his strong points long before he stepped onto a high school court.

The battle for Alexandria is always a good one! From what it sounds like Brossart are more than a few opportunities to win this one

Joe Jennings has improved dramatically for the Mustangs and should be a force this year! Mustangs could have won this game if not for a poor performance at the free throw line. Always a great matchup between these two! I loved hearing the cheers from the Mustangs faithful when several St. Mary boys names on the Camel team were announced. It was awesome seeing so many former teammates from St. Mary on both benches. A lot of those boys (frosh, JV and varsity) were coached by Mitch Orth (son of CCHS asst. coach Dave Orth) who died last year. I know Mitch is looking down with pride on his boys and rooting every one of them on no matter which team they play for now.
