I have nothing against Louisville, it's a cool town. I somewhat disagree with the article in that I couldn't care less who plays in the 6A game each year. T vs. X, R vs. A, B vs. C.....whatever.

Whe I read it I told Mama they shouldn't call the "Big Three". Male hasn't won it since 2000, haven't played in the finals since 2003.

 

Hopefully that will change in the next few years. Trinity hasn't lost to a Louisville Public School with the current head Coach in 58 games.

Could this possibly hurt the distribution of the good kids enrolling at Trinity or St. X in the future. It will tougher to tell the kids that you have a legitimate shot at state every year. From the many games I attended of the St X Trinity regular season game, most of the alumni I talk to would rather win this game anyway.

No. I guess the state final may end up being the district final.

What needs to be looked at AL?

 

Rockmom Im not AL but IMO there is nothing that needs to be looked at. The fact is that Trinity works hard but doesn't work any harder than anyone else. They have very good talent and the great coaches to maximize it. Nothing there to change or try and fix. Do they have more players to pick from? Yes, but the last time I looked that wasn't against the rules. Mayfield always has less players on the team than Graves and we beat them most of the time with better athletes and better coaching.

Even St. X vs Male makes the USA Today.

The new alignment does not affect X and T. They know the path to the Bowling Green will go through their arch rivals. If that comes in the 2nd or 3rd round or in the final - who cares. The new alignment makes M and M more vulnerable since they will likely have to face the 2 'Green Monsters' in the 2nd round. I am not sure if they will 'rotate' the paired district but if they don't that is where the real losers in this gerrymandering/unconstitutional process are. Without rotation the paired district will likely be wiped out in the first round of the playoffs. So the hurt will be for the schools that in the paired district during the playoffs. If they KNOW they have to face X or T or M and M then the kids in that paired district will avoid football and play soccer or something else. So again, KHSAA gerrymandering will hurt, not help, football participation.

As for "how it feels" - My kids school has ended its season the last 3 years at the same place at the hands of the same in-district school in the "Regional" final. Its no fun. So I and lot of other people outside of 6A know the challenge when you play a school who focuses on football and has and maintains a tradition. Outside of the "green monsters" of 6A I am talking about - Highlands, Boyle Country, Danville, Beechwood, Newport Covington Catholic. Notice that most of that non-6A list is made up public, not private schools. Losing 3 years in a row, or 6 or 9 years in a row to the same school does not mean there is some structural defect or unfair advantage that the winning school has. It takes a combination of many factors and when those factors come together, usually the school or school system tries to keep that going. One thing for certain - it does not mean that one school "works harder" than another. I see where that phrase causes you great angst, as it well should.

 

I grew up in Louisville I knew the lay of the land there pretty well in the 70s and early 80s. And now living in the Bluegrass region and being involved with youth sports in the area and in the state of various types I have seen a lot that I would never see living on in Jefferson Country of the Louisville Metro area. People have been trying to 'fix' the X and T challenge structurally for a long, long time. The resentment in the football ranks even spilled over to LexCath after it won 2 championships. Every fix has failed - doing away with the JeffCo vs. State Champions, going to 6 classes and now compressing the 6A class and arbitrarily restructuring the JeffCo/Eastern County districts to compress the footprint of the traditional powers of 6A. As for the excuses - save them, I have heard them all. Recruiting, dorms, out of state recruiting, etc, etc. As if any of those explains why X and T put 100 to 120 freshmen on the field every year or why they have a varsity starting lineup that is almost all seniors, every year! When a 6A program post those numbers - and still has trouble competing lets talk. But the this is what the "green monsters" do, every year. And they have been doing that since the 1950s!

 

Now I have heard coaches from the public side say - "all coaches coach the same, it all comes down the joes". So the rational is "we are all equal as coaches and if you gave the same players I would win - hence we lose because they recruit". Well, if that is how you rationalize the situation - so be it. Its not true - coaches ability varies greatly, but they will keep telling themselves that.

 

I know you are looking for a better answer for your kid than "work harder". I am not sure what tell the actual kids other than beating the elites in football in this state is hard, it always has been and always will be. And if you lose to them there should be no shame. It is probably NOT because you did not work hard enough, that is a crap answer. The message should be if you do beat them, you have done something special. And this is not just for kids in 6A. Everyone in 5A knew the road went through Highlands for a state ring this year, as it has the last 3 years and a number years prior to that. Everyone in 4A this year knew the road went through Boyle County or Bell County or both. So each class has its version of the X/T teams, the perennial elites of high school football.

 

As for "the fix" overall or long term. There really is none that probably satisfies most. As I said, X and T and most perennial powers have been doing what the do for decades. What do have to that allows that is support from the school administration, the school system administrators and their parents, alumni and fan base. Its true at X and T, but it is also true at Highlands and Boyle County. The other thing I have seen as a common factor to success is a 'program' style approach where the football is managed by most the same function from 1st grade through high school. Northern Kentucky/Covington area schools have outstanding youth programs, the Louisville area Catholic system has the CCSA, in Lexington LexCath and LCA jointly run flag and tackle football in the elementary grades and both have middle school football, Bell County has a top to bottom focus on football and it shows in their success. A sad fact is that Jefferson Country and for that matter Fayette County Middle school football programs are way below par when compared to all these other models. JCPS just started middle school football and a number of teams jointed the KYMSFA so they are playing catchup. Fayette County seems still stuck when it comes to strong feeder programs for football. So the two common themes of long term, perennial success are a) strong program support and b) good youth feeder programs.

 

I believe Jefferson County has a lot of challenges, desegregation was painful in the late 70s and early 80s and the current system of magnets does not at all support strong football teams. For all practical purposes a JeffCo public coach gets new crop each year as freshmen. He has not idea who they are, what they know or how they play since he is seeing them for the first time as freshmen. This is simply no way to run football. Obviously no one kid and no small group of parents can fix this. There needs to be some fixing done at the higher levels. And it will take time once it is done. Sorry for the gloomy outlook but being from Louisville and going through a lot of what I talk about here, I believe it is accurate.

It doesn't matter what changes they make. Trinity and X will have the best teams every year. I will never understand why they want to try and change everything because two teams are great every year. It seems like they are getting punished for it.

Trinity and X fans always say that they are playing for the state championship. So what does it matter which round they play?

Yes, but that doesn't happen due to the SEC championship...much like the T and X district championship, it will eliminate a shot for one in the title. Think of the new district as the SEC championship, there are several years where many could argue that was the National Championship.
