Lexington Catholic 57 Cov. Cath 44

If you listen to the game in the link below, you can hear (around 1 hour, 11 minutes into the broadcast) the Lex Cath Student Section chanting "Fake, Fake, Fake!" (You must turn the volume up).

Did the parents and faculty have earmuffs on? LOL Were they handing out earmuffs to the crowd?

Don't see Ryle being one of the better teams in the region. Conner will be a good test.

I am happy to see Ryan Hayden crack the scoring column for the Colonels in this game.

Ryan was one of three blue-chip 8th Graders who played at St. Joe, Cold Spring for the Diocesan Runners-up back in 2007-08 - Hayden who went to CovCath, Evan Morse who went to NCC, and Zach Fardo who came to Brossart. As such, I have followed the careers of these three guys with interest and was curious when and if Hayden might become an impact player for the Colonels, who because of their overall program depth levels, fill from the top down. Hayden is a junior and can be an asset to the Colonels for the next two years.

Fardo has enjoyed a rewarding career thus far with the Mustangs, starting with our varsity as a sophomore and this year as a Junior.

Morse figured to become an impact player for the Breds this season, but has sustained serious damage to his knee as a result of a football injury which could severly restrict his involvment in basketball this year.

Congrats to Ryan Hayden!!!

Not a pretty game by any measure. Connelly scored six points in the first quarter and then quickly began collecting fouls to the point where he was never a factor after the first peiod to the point where he eventually fouled out of the game. Drew Baker was sorely missed. Free throws..... well we missed them, again.

CovCath showed a reluctance to drive the ball to the basket and in many cases they passed up wide open jump shots. This didn't come from just one player, it was endemic of the whole team. I don't understand it.

The most disturbing event in this game, however, came in the third period when Andrew Schult went down with what appeared to be an ankle injury. He was in obvious pain and was on the court for several minutes being attended to by the trainers. While he was down on the court, the Lex Cath student section mocked him crying noises and jeers of 'Fake!, Fake'. This all occurred while adults who appeared to be Lex Cath faculty looked on with indifference, at best and bemusement at worst. I was absolutely sickened by this display. One would think that a religious based school would be close enough to the principles carved into the walls in the gym lobby that this type of classless behavior would not even be a remote possibility.

Last year Lex Cath had a player come in to CovCath's gym and 'sign' the CovCath school logo during the pregame introductions. I was appalled by that gesture then. Little did I know that Lex Cath would be able to top that. Truly, truly a total lack of class.

People who know me will be shocked to hear me say this, but I believe that Highlands has more class than LexCath. I could not see the Bird student body jeering an injured player on the court, EVEN if it was a CovCath player.

I remember that last year and IMO the Covcath faithful made a big deal about nothing. I've seen and heard much worse before, during, and after games than a KID "signing the court." A lot of over-reaction about nothing.

Injuries are never funny, but when the kid signed the court last year it made that game so much more interesting

Listened to the broadcast and agree that some students yelled fake for about 5 seconds. I was more focused on the game and was concerned that the player had torn his ACL. Again, in no way would anyone condone that type of reaction to an injured player, and to suggest that faculty or other adults thought it was funny (bemused) is quite a stretch and inaccurate. The action of a few should not be used to condemn the entire school.

Uh oh ... is this headed toward another year with no consistent, quality guard play for CCH? Who can step up and get it done on this team?

The 2 senior guards of Mashinot and Riedinger are the most obvious candidates. Brett needs to be confident in his outside shot, when he plays with confidence he can be a real threat. When he is tentative about shooting the 3 early, he never seems to get in the groove. It' s early in the season, I have great confidence that Brett will still be the consistent outside threat.

Maschinot is a great athelete who needs to use his speed and quickness to drive to the basket. He is not a great outside threat, but needs to take that shot when left open as well. From the reports I heard of the game, Connor may have been a little under the weather. I heard he looked tired and out of breath during the game.

I for one think that Clint Massie will also be major contributor from the guard position. Clint does a nice job of directing the team, and has enough of an outside shot and enough of slashing game to be effective doing both.

The key for the Colonels will be eliminating the costly turnovers. With the size they will have up front, it's critical that they get shots up and at least give their bigs a chance to get rebounds. When you don't take a shot, it's tough to get a rebound.
