I would think with the economy the way it is you would see the overall level improve with a bigger pool to draw from.

No clue as to how much they pay but remember that it takes a while before an official is up to speed.

And I would assume you know all 5? Wait, I thought everyone is entitled to their opinions per another post of yours. I never said I didn't care for the official, but that he is not very good. This based on coaches from several teams and also from officials that do games in NKY. And, by what criteria do you claim all 5 are very good officials? Did you grade them? Did you watch all the games they refereed? I don't think so. Since you seem to know these officials, what are their names? You'll probably say it's against the rules to name people on BGP, but by naming you're not saying anything derogatory. Plus, I would venture to say you don't have a clue who they are. I think you seen my comment and had to say something derogatory. Again, thanks Govnah Blago!

One factor is the fact that officials rarely work together as a group throughout the playoffs. You may have three guys from one crew move on to the second week and be joined by two others. I think the consistency is affected here because of the lack of working together. I think the whole crew should stay together throughout the season if at all possible.

BW actually had the same refs against Mayfield as the week before in Frankfort. Not sure that is the proper thing to happen.

Three of the five were the same. Not the entire crew.

In those two situations, the WR as he always does asked the ref if he was okay prior to the ball being snapped. The ref told him he was lined up offside, so he moved back a step and asked the ref again. At that point the ref did not answer him, he threw the flag because after moving back the second time, he was still lined up offside and had asked the ref to many times. The ball was never snapped. Not to mention that it was a mud field with no hash marks. Awesome call in a state semi-final game!

 

A rule of thumb for wing officials: Don't nit-pick the wideouts. Make the formation legal, if you can. At the very least, talk the the wideout after the play. A little communication is warranted.

Also, I was informed by an old time ref that the refs from up in NKY going to the state game are not selected on performance. Rather they alternate each year. Guess soccer mentality has seeped into the officiating ranks as well. I know of one from up in NKY that shouldn't even be officiating let alone doing a championship game.

 

That is not entirely accurate! Don't believe everything you hear from and "old time" ref. The 5 NKOA offficials that were chosen by KHSAA Commissioner, are all very good officials. They were recommended by the Assigning Secretary from Northern Ky. The Commisioner did not have to accept the recommendations. The officials were chosen based on coaches' ratings, on the field performance, game evaluations, meeting attendance, NFHS/KHSAA test results, clinic attendance, and involvement in the organization. I have, and would officiate any game, at any level, with any of the officials who are representing the NKOA in Bowling Green this weekend. However, the KHSAA does have a policy about how and when an official can officiate in the State Championships. I guess that it wants to spread the wealth so to speak. Nonetheless, the NKOA officials that re working this weekend are some of the best the NKOA has to offer.

Congrats to the gentleman that are working state games from N. Ky. All very good officials and all very deserving.

This is always an interesting argument.. Somebody had brought up that the officials should help the WR to make the formation legal, etc. No way he should do that, now he should tell them to scoot up or back, etc. beyond that, it's up to the coaching and the player to know whats going on. I always love to give the officials I know a hard time about what they do, but it's a hard job and they take a lotta heat. Not just in football, but can you imagine basketball officials who have fans RIGHT in their ears?!? I hate going to small gyms during bball games and hear the fans SCREAMING at an official, they don't do it for the money but for the love of the game and to help young athletes get better.. I was always told by friends that every high school kid should have to wait tables to see how to treat people, but maybe we should have them referee pee-wee games and put up with daddy no-name who thinks he is Bobby Knight so they know how not to act towards officials... Mr. Official is a lost term in todays sport...

I appreciate your comments about officiating, but your comments about not making an "illegal" formation "legal" in order to prevent calling a penalty is way off base. If you know that a player is supposed to be on the line of scrimmage-put in on the LOS; If you know that a player is supposed to be off of the line of scrimmage-put him off. There is no such thing as "no mans land." Don't automatically call a penalty. Talk to the player(s) or coaches. Now, if a player continues to defy your instructions/recommendations, or he ignores you, you may have no other choice but to call a penalty. Preventative officiating before the play or, better yet, before the game, is the best policy. finally, we instruct our oficials that you never, never, ever tell a player during a play to either scoot up or scoot back. Swallow your whistle & communicate. Otherwise, you could call a foul on every play.
