As for the Raceland fans rooting for Russell, I disagree with the notion that Raceland won't root for Russell. As a matter of fact, I think Ram should pack in there with me and trek to Belfry and make 2C buy us some popcorn at the concession stand.

 

And not to further steer the thread awry, but I find that most people from a particular region root for the teams from their area when they advance. For instance, I'd like to see Fairview trounce LCA this weekend. I'd be highly surprised if that happened and would be tickled if they won by 1, but am rooting for them all the same.

 

I agree. I always root for whichever area team makes it the furthest each year.

Okay, okay! I must offer a retraction. Most of you Raceland fellas, while predicting otherwise have said you support us in some fashion. Really through all of it there really appears to be one who has a maroon and gold rock stuck in his craw.

I can't decide on wheter to come down to Belfry or to go to the Johnson Central game. How far is the Belfry trip? I have never been.

 

BTW, I am always cheering for the local teams, that includes our fiercely hated rivals, The Fairview Eagles! I always cheer for the local teams in the playoffs. Furthermore, I treat players in all sports from almost all area schools and am friends with coaches from many schools (not only football coaches). I also treat out of state kids for thier sports injuries.

That would be both interesting and surprising. They've gone to the shotgun spread formation with Cooper at QB for about 5 or 6 drives this season. The only times they've moved Cooper to RB (that I recall) have been in the Mason County and Sheldon Clark games.

 

I had high hopes that we would see more of this formation after seeing them try it out with some success in their preseason scrimmage against Spring Valley, but we really haven't seen a lot of it this season. As I said, it would be surprising to see them come out with this. I wouldn't, however, be surprised to see them go to it if they fall behind and the Wing-T proves ineffective.

It will take you about 1:45 - 2:00 if you come down the WV side on Rt 52, then pick up 119 south just outside of Williamson and follow it on to Belfry.

 

It would be probably 2:15 - 2:30 if you come 23 to Pikeville then 119 north to Belfry but it is better roads and more places to stop for necessities.

 

If you make the trip, spindoc will buy you a hot dog and a popcorn at the concession stand.

I'm picking Belfry to win close since the game is at Belfry. However, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of a Russell win. The game should be close either way.

PLAY IT AGAIN: Russell, Belfry clash once more in playoffs

 

Yes, Russell and Belfry are facemask to facemask again with a playoff backdrop.

 

For the fifth time in seven years, the warhorse football programs guided by coaching icons Ivan McGlone and Philip Haywood will test each other in the postseason.

 

“It seems like it’s been a common theme the last six or seven years,” McGlone said of the Russell-Belfry playoff matchups. “We always seem to be going up there to play.”

 

Two years ago, Belfry blitzed the visiting Red Devils 42-0. A couple of years prior to that, on the same field, Russell delivered one of its all-time defensive gems to stifle the Pirates 19-0.

 

“Sometimes he (McGlone) has popped us, and sometimes we have gotten them,” Haywood said of the physical encounters between run-dominated teams. “There are not really many secrets when we play each other. In 2006, they destroyed us. I have laughed about that one. We could have played for a week and not scored on them.”

In an unrelated quesiton, how is Coach McGlone's health? Last couple of times I have seen him on the sidelines, it seems he can barely get around. Is it knee and hip trouble or something else?
