What players should we look for from Russell? Who are the playmakers on both sides of the ball?

 

What is Russell doing well? Not so well? I know they still run the Wing-T, but are they doing anything different out of it?

Someone asked me about Belfry's home record and their playoff record, so I did a little digging. Just for fun, here are a few stats for Belfry playing at home, and some playoff stats for the last 10 years (2001-2010).

 

When the Pirates have played at home, they have won 83% of the time, unless it is a playoff game, where they have won 86% of their games.

Since 2002 they have not lost a regional championship game, either at home or on the road.

Belfry has never lost a regional championship game in CAM Stadium.

The last time Belfry lost in the regional championship was in 2001 to Breathitt County in the "mud bowl" at Vipperman Stadium.

Belfry won the regional championship, and made it to the semifinals every year from 2003-2008.

That streak ended last season when Sheldon Clark beat them in round 2.

 

 

Of course, all of this means nothing, but was fun to look up.

Home Record = 64-13 = 83%

Overall Playoff Record = 31-7 = 78%

Home Playoff Record = 24-4 = 86%

Overall Regional Championship Games = 6-2 = 75%

Home Regional Championship Games = 4-1 = 80%

 

Belfry moved into CAM Stadium in 2005, so I split the last 10 years up accordingly.

 

2001-2004 (Vipperman Stadium)

Home Record = 24-4 = 86%

Overall Playoff Record = 15-2 = 88%

Home Playoff Record = 10-1 = 91%

Overall Regional Championship Games = 2-2 = 50%

Home Regional Championship Games = 1-1 = 50%

2005-2010 (CAM Stadium)

Home Record = 40-9 = 82%

Overall Playoff Record = 16-5 = 76%

Home Playoff Record = 14-3 = 82%

Overall Regional Championship Games = 4-0 = 100%

Home Regional Championship Games = 3-0 = 100%

Got a feeling SL-doc would love to see Russell win this one. He just doesn't feel they will! Always root for the local teams. Russell is a big rival but in the playoffs we are all for them!

Where have you been LD? Been licking your wounds? You seem to be healthy now! I guess a couple upset wins will cure what ever you had! Don't give the excuse of being out of town again!!!

First of all, I'd love to see Russell win but I haven't been on the band wagon for 2 weeks and you've won. I have yet to see a compliment from you headed towards us, even after we beat you for the (yaaaaaaawn) third time in a row. Good to know I can't have a little fun with my post without your sarcasm. Maybe I'll just change my entire attitude and pull for Belfry and not just because Watusi is the MAN!

This will be a great matchup. I will take Russell in a close game 28 to 27.

Two players. Korzep and Cooper.

 

Joel Korzep has been the running the ball very well after being moved to FB for the playoffs. He played on the line for most of the season but switching him to FB has proven to be a good move. QB Patrick Cooper has been running well, too. Those are the two main playmakers on offense. There are several others who will get some carries, though. Russell doesn't really have a "feature back" as in years past when they faced Belfry. I guess that's good because there's no one to key on, but it's also bad because no one is going to break huge runs. The same two players, Korzep and Cooper, have been very good on defense as well along with linebackers Paul Spradlin and Justin Davidson.

 

With the exception of the Ashland and Raceland games, Russell has been playing pretty good defense all season and even better in the playoffs. Their passing game, even though it's mainly only used to move the chains on 3rd downs, has been a little suspect at times this year. They've thrown some costly interceptions in a few games this season. I would imagine Belfry fans and Coach Haywood will recognize the Wing-T that Coach McGlone will be calling plays from. Other than going to shotgun spread formation on a few drives this season, they aren't doing a lot different.

 

One thing to point out is that Russell does have a pretty good senior kicker in Tanner Locey. If the game comes down to field goals, then Russell has a shot.

:confused:I suggest you might read all the post by Raceland fans again. Also, you mentioned/hinted envy? We haven't played Russell in a playoff game so that is a non issue. Belfry's offense is run by Jr QB Tyler Williams #4. He makes good reads and runs the offense very efficiently. He can tuck and run when he needs to and actually passes with good accuracy, albeit not too often. The three running backs who get most of the carries are Jr FB Willis #3, Sr RB Pruitt #2 and So RB Robinson #40. Willis is a stout FB with surprising speed and he is very tough. He gets the tough yards. Pruitt is a speedster who prefers to get to the outside and Robinson has turned into a very capable RB also. The carries are split between these 3, with the occasional carry by Jr FB #5 Runyon.

 

Belfry runs very little true wishbone like you may be used to seeing. They usually line up with double wings and a traditional fullback. They run a lot of motion and still run their base offense out of this formation. You will see some belly series, veer, counters and sweeps as well as option. They really don't have a feature back either, but every one they put in the game can run well.

 

Defensively, Belfry will run their tried and true 5-2. They have decent speed and pursue well. Their linebackers are both sophomores and they have even a couple of freshmen who play. Hopefully they will be disciplined enough to play honest against the wing-t with all the misdirection in the backfield. Look for #5 at DE to be a leader and don't underestimate #10 who is the hardest hitter on the team from a DB position.

 

With the exception of the punting unit, special teams have not been a real strong suit. Hopefully this game will not come down to that.

As for the Raceland fans rooting for Russell, I disagree with the notion that Raceland won't root for Russell. As a matter of fact, I think Ram should pack in there with me and trek to Belfry and make 2C buy us some popcorn at the concession stand.

 

And not to further steer the thread awry, but I find that most people from a particular region root for the teams from their area when they advance. For instance, I'd like to see Fairview trounce LCA this weekend. I'd be highly surprised if that happened and would be tickled if they won by 1, but am rooting for them all the same.
