Wow...an elementary class reading a story with racial epitaphs? How inappropriate. Of course, I guess that should be a "local" decision.

What possible reason does it bother someone that there's a Black History Month, Women's History Month? The goal is to enlighten those who are interested. I would think if you weren't interested, it wouldn't matter to you either way?

 

I'm all for it. I've learned a lot more interesting history from the little commercials they show on TV than I ever learned in school. Kind of like the Bathroom Reader books.

Honestly, I have never read it. My local school district did not promote diversity. I was the only non-white student in my school district back in the day, except for one year when we had two Native American students.

 

We are never too old to learn, though, and it's my own fault now for not having read it. Fill me in. Does it contain racial slurs?

That's how I feel about it. And some of the commercials have spurred me to look deeper into some of the things they've featured. And each time, I always felt more enlightened as a whole, not just about Black History or Women's History, or Latino....

I just think it is highly disrespectful to history itself to make one part of it more important than another. It is all history. Each has its own distinctive part.

Exactly....it brings attention to individuals or events. Those do not celebrate races. Can you imagine if we actually had a month that celebrated the importance of just white people?
