I'm all for erasing those lines as Tim Scott indicated. I'm also in the group that is in favor of getting rid of things like Black History Month and the NAACP.

I have come to the point when feeling things out and they ask for race, I skip the question. Let's move to a point that race is irrelevant.

Because it is part of history in general. I think it is just as silly as if we had a "Jew History Month" or "Immigrant History Month". It is all part of history and it should be respected as such.

Can you imagine the outrage if there was a United Caucasion College Fund or Miss White America where only whites were elligible?

You are correct that it's part of our history. However, the issue isn't that it's "part" of our history. The issue is that it's not taught very well to our students.

 

So I ask. What's the harm in emphasizing it? Is there a downside to having or students learn details about Brown v Board of Plessy v Ferguson? Is there a downside to learning about unknown inventors? Is there a downside to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen? I'm 47. I can tell you that none of those were taught to me in high school. What's the harm? Who is being hurt?

Heck, we were briefly introduced to those things in grade school, then in much greater detail in high school....Also, what inventors are you speaking of? We were taught about tons of African-American inventors. If memory serves correctly, the Airmen were the first black fighters from WWII, correct? Again, all those things were taught to me in school. Again I'll ask what kinda school doesn't teach those things?

Well, "introduced" is quite different than being "taught." If you were taught that in detail you are in the minority(no pun intended). 75% of the people on here couldn't give you much beyond a one-line summary of Brown and Plessy. It's not taught in detail.

Outside of the major events (Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI, WWII, Vietnam, Korea, Declaration of Independence, MLK, Rosa Parks, etc.), most everything else is somewhat glossed over. Quite frankly, there isn't enough time to give a wide variety of topics their just due. My point is, it doesn't have anything to do with it being a race thing.

I'm not against it, however I do find it extremely unnecessary and somewhat hypocritical. What if we (as a country), decided we wanted to have March as White History Month, and dedicate it to teaching students about the numerous historic events that were achieved by Caucasian-Americans that don't get nearly as much time as they deserve? You and I both know there would be an uproar over that.

I think many would tell you that we have had White History Month(s) for 200 years.
