I'm missing the big picture?

 

We celebrate black history one month out of the whole year with the shortest month...yes very respectable.

 

We celebrate it for that one month....to me it says "Welp, that month is over, now on to the White, Asian, Latino, and so on for the rest of the year."

 

You cannot have a month that just studies the culture and events of one race. It is wrong to do so.

 

Rather than devoting an entire month to black history and attempting to cover all of it in a single month, black history should be incorporated more in every day history lessons.

That was why it was started. Black history wasn't being told in every day history. The reason February was chosen because both Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were both born in that month. Also did anyone know that it was started by a man whose parents were former slaves and he worked in kentucky coal mines as a child? His name was Carter Woodson.

I actually did not know it was invented by a black man until I seen this episode. I am very thankful to George W. Carver!!

 

I actually did learn that in school. But think how much more there is to learn? The focus on certain groups gives a chance to enlighten people to facts about groups within our country and their contributions that are not able to be squeezed into the normal course of learning the broad history of this country. Although I joked with RTS about his request for an Irish/German history month, I actually think it's a good idea. There are groups of people of all ethnic persuasions who have significantly impacted what America is. No one is forcing anyone to learn more. But bringing the focus to a particular group for one month of the year is exactly as valid as celebrating a particular event in history. It gives one pause, it makes one appreciate their contributions.

There are thousands upon thousands of inventions and I do not even know a lot of the inventors....just because I did not know that peanut butter was invented by a black man during school doesn't mean hell froze over nor does it help your claim. I have learned more about black history on my own time by reading and researching than I have during my schooling on black history month.

Yes, I would be in favor of White History month, or any of the others. (There's already a Latino month). I'm OK if you think it's silly. But I don't understand just how vehemently you're against it. It shouldn't be that big of a deal to you. No one is forcing anything on you. As to whether African-American history is simply American history, I disagree. Over the course of the recording of our history, much has been left out of the individuals and details of events in ALL aspects of history. I think it's great that we have months that bring the focus to those "forgotten" details. You have to know where you've been to get where you're going.
