Tweet says Kevin Garnett called Charlie Villanueva a cancer patient

Featured Replies

The Boston Celtics pounded the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday, and messages sent from Charlie Villanueva's Twitter account indicate Kevin Garnett may have made it personal.

One of the tweets says: "KG called me a cancer patient, I'm upset because, u know how many people died from cancer, and he's tossing it like it's a joke."

Garnett is known for his trash talking on the court. Villanueva suffers from alopecia universalis, a medical condition that results in hair loss. The Pistons forward does not have hair on his head.

I'm sorry, but I laughed out loud.

He shouldn't have said that but he does.

I agree!

Holy crap! He's right. Not my first choice of trash talking material but to each his own...

The media is going to jump all over KG (if they haven't already) about this...

Poor choice, but it happened during the game & I'm sure there are worse things said.

Villanueva responded via twitter: "KG talks alot of crap, he's prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him."

This was mild based on some of the stuff we used to hear about Bird or Jordan. Nobody ever complained about it because they could back it up.

The media has been all over KG. One of the guys on PTI took offense to it because cancer affects everyone - he lost his sister to cancer - so he thought it was over the line.

KG's remark was not politically correct, but I'd guess trash talk during a game rarely is.

FWIW, KG has said that he was misquoted. He claims to have said that Villanueva is a cancer to his team and the league.

Plus they didn't have a Twitter account.

Paul Shirley, a former NBA player who now writes, has chimed in on the subject. Paul was a former teammate of KG's. Some of you long-time BGP'ers may remember the threads about Shirley's blog on ESPN (which are absolutely hilarious). Myself, I bought Shirley's book "Can I Keep My Jersey?" which was an enjoyable read. But I digress...

Today, Shirley tweeted the following:

"Topical NBA character reference: Kevin Garnett is one of the most thoughtful, intelligent, & noble men I met in basketball."

@WhitlockJason: Further, trash-talking (as you know) goes well beyond what is reasonable or tolerable.

@sportsguy33: See previous tweet of mine. Garnett deserves backing, especially b/c trash-talk is (&always has been) exempt from analysis.

@ejwestksu: Re: Garnett...Yeah, why would you listen to me? It's not like I was ever his teammate or played against him. Wait...

@ScottFeldman: Re: Talk...It's been that way for as long as I've played. Not meant to be taken literally.

@ScottFeldman: Re: Trash...When were these "old days?" Whole point of talk is to get under skin. If punches get thrown, thrower has lost.

"Seems there was some confusion earlier. I was serious: in my experiences, Kevin Garnett is the sort of person we should all aspire to be.
