How many people think that the UFC's "branding" of Jake Shields as a solid contender to GSPs welterweight title was blown out of the water? He's got some work to do if he think he can put GSP away.

I didn't expect the Velasquez V Lesnar fight to go that way......Cain was on top of his game AND Lesnar's.

Later.

Jake Shields is the best contender they have had in the WW division for a long time, IMO. He'd beat Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, and probably John Fitch IMO. He's not better than GSP though.

I wonder if his near death experience has anything to do with his last two performances. In any event, UFC's lost a big meal ticket with Lesnar.

I agree. We didn't see the best Jake Shields Saturday night. I don't think he'll beat GSP, but its possible. Whoever beats GSP is going to have to be great on the ground, and Shields is. I'm curious to see if GSP keeps the same strategy against Shields, or if he'll choose to keep the fight standing where he'll have a monster advantage.

OUCH

He looks better there than he did in the ring.

Lesnar also has to learn how to put people in the guard. He has no defense when he's on the ground. He basically just covers up his face and tries not to get hit.

True. He never pulls guard and attempts to control his opponent. Simply put, he's all offense, and when that doesn't work, he has no answers.

This would greatly improve his game, but I don't know if he even considers bjj when he gets in there. He needs to change his instinct of turning his back when he gets hit. He might be the only wrestler I have seen that doesn't look to shoot when he gets tagged. This would be his best defense, IMO.

100% agree here, I don't see anyone being able to out wrestle GSP, which would be how Shields would try to win. Shields is better than he showed IMO.

Shields needs to work on his stand up if he has any chance against GSP. I know thats not Jake's game but his game isn't going to beat GSP either, he needs to try to equalize standing up, and hes no where close to being GSP there either.

I am interested in seeing how GSP fights Kos. He has taken a lot of flack from not just the fans, but Dana as well for kind of pulling an Anderson Silva, and not finish guys off lately. He has just wrestled them around for five rounds and took the decision. Hoping to see a more aggressive striking attack from St. Pierre in the upcoming bout.

I dont think thats been the case at all for GSP. He beat Fitch to a pulp but he just wouldnt go away, he won the standup against Alves and he is always active on the ground. He doesnt just hold the guys down and not work, he is agressive in his gnp and submissions. Not sure how Hardy got out of the armbar GSP had him in. Thought he was going to break his arm.

GSP hasn't been a very exciting guy to watch since he altered his strategy. No doubt he's doing the smart thing by taking the fight where he has the biggest advantage, but it makes for a less exciting watch. He was pretty good on his feet. I expect him to continue the same plan against Kos...take him down and wear him out. It may or may not go the distance, but I don't think Koscheck is good enough to threaten him unless he gets lucky and lands something like Serra did.

However, against Shields, I think GSP will have a bigger advantage on his feet. Shields is one of the best grapplers and submission guys in the world...will GSP continue to go for takedowns and dominant wrestling, which would essentially put the fight in the only realm that Shields could possibly beat him. Or, will he keep it standing and try to punish him, because I don't think Shields can threaten GSP in the least with his striking.

GSP is a terrible matchup for Shields. He's a better wrestler than Jake and GSP is too skilled and too strong to get submitted. He is also a way better strike than Shields as well. Its going to take a great striker with excellent takedown defense to beat GSP right now and I dont see anyone at welterweight who is good enough to do that right now.

Kos is someone who has improved their striking game more than anyone I have watched come up with maybe the exception of Frankie Edgar. I would say they are in the top of the class as far as guys whos games continue to evolve and improve. What you just named was the recipe for beating GSP, I think Kos could cause him some trouble for he has what you are talking about. Maybe not an excellent striker but his striking is very, very good right now and improving with each fight.
